Chapter fifty

My head jarred awake as the grind of the doors shook the earth. A metal clang sounded and the door swung open. "Aren't dead, are Ya shank?" Alby chuckled. Alby looked radiant of energy. His color had returned and he looked as good as new. I noticed Thomas staring, and so did alby.

"Shuck it, boy, what you lookin' at?"

Thomas shook is head, and I giggled. As bizarre as Alby's recovery was, it was good to have him back. "Wha-Nothing. Just seems crazy you healed so quickly." He stuttered, and i swooped in to save him. "You're fine now?" I asked, stepping into the light.

Alby flexed his right bicep. "Ain't never been better-come on out."

We did as he asked, and I inhaled the sweet sense of familiarity. I didn't appreciate the slammer smell. It was a mix of rust and bored despair. "Alby closed the Slammer door and locked it, then turned to face us. "Actually, nothin' but a lie. I feel like a piece of klunk twice crapped by a Griever."

"Yeah, you looked it yesterday." Thomas bluntly stated, and alby gave him a glare. "But today you look brand-new. I swear." He tried to fix his mistake. Alby put the keys in his pocket and leaned back against the Slammer's door. "So, quite the little talk we had yesterday."

I tensed at the thought of what had happened. The terrifying images were all to fresh, and would probably rot away in my shucked up head. "Uh ... yeah, I remember." Thomas groaned, and I nodded, not feeling in a talkative mood.

"I saw what I saw, Greenie. It's kinda fadin', but I ain't never gonna forget. It was terrible. Tried to talk about it, somethin' starts choking me. Now the images are gettin' up and gone, like that same somethin' don't like me remembering." Alby explained, and his gaze darkened.

"What was it about me-you kept saying you saw me. What was I doing?" Thomas's voice was slightly shaking, and the unnerving feeling crept into my chest. And the realization hit my like a brick. He saw Adam. He might know that we shared memories. I might actually be banished. My wide eyes turned away in the distance to hide the flustered look in my face. Wanting to be banished now seemed foolish. One of the 'pros' to having your thoughts in the slammer. I had wanted to take the easy way out, but I had also really wanted to protect my friends...

I looked back towards Alby, to find him staring at an empty space in the distance for a while before answering. "You were with the ... Creators. Helping them. But that ain't what got me shook up."

Helping?

Oh come on Joanie. You should've gathered that much from the memories. I almost face palmed myself, but that would've looked stupid. Alby continued. "I hope the Changing doesn't give us real memories-just plants fake ones. Some suspect it-I can only hope. If the world's the way I saw it ..." He trailed off, leaving an ominous silence.

"Alby..." I paused, then pressed, "what did you see. About me. About... Adam?" I asked, turning my gaze to floor. It had been a while since Adam died, but I'm sure everyone noticed I hadn't gotten over that. Honestly, it's not like Newt could get jealous. For two main reasons.

1. As far as the Gladers know, I barely knew him. But I had gathered lots of information on memories.

2. He's dead.

It was quite simple really.

"I can't..." He sighed, and I sagged. "Can't you tell me what you saw about me?" Thomas asked, trying to take a chance. Alby shook his head. "No way, shank. I wasn't just being mean to Joanie. I just ain't gonna risk stranglin' myself again. Might be something they got in our brains to control us-just like the memory wipe."

"Well, if I'm evil, maybe you should leave me locked up." Thomas moaned, and I could tell he didn't mean it. "Greenie, you ain't evil. You might be a shuck-faced slinthead, but you ain't evil." Alby showed the slightest hint of a smile, a bare crack in his usually hard face. I smiled a little too, and crossed my arms. "Thomas, we're kinda in the same boat here. So thanks for having faith in me," I smirked.

"What you shanks did-riskin' your butt to save me and Minho-that ain't no evil I've ever heard of. Nah, just makes me think the Grief Serum and the Changing got somethin' fishy about 'em. For your sakes and mine, I hope so." He finished, and I exhaled in relief. Okay, so I'm not being banished. Maybe.

"How bad was it? Your memories that came back." I tried. I needed something. "I remembered things from growin' up, where I lived, that sort of stuff. And if God himself came down right now and told me I could go back home ..." Alby looked to the ground and shook his head again. "If it was real, Joanie, I swear I'd go shack up with the Grievers before goin' back."

I raised my eyebrows about how passionately he felt. I would probably give anything to at least have memories of my before life. Yeah, I get them. But I meant before WICKED. Before I was molded. Who are my parents? Where am I from? Who was my other sibling?

"Well, maybe they're not real, Alby. Maybe the Grief Serum is some kind of psycho drug that gives you hallucinations." Thomas seemed to really want information, or at least console Alby.

"Alby thought for a minute. "A drug ... hallucinations ..." Then he shook his head. "Doubt it." It had been worth a try. "We still have to escape this place."
"Yeah, thanks, Greenie," Alby said sarcastically. "Don't know what we'd do without your pep talks. Honestly Joanie, you two need to make a business or something,"

I laughed, "sorry, I've got my own hands full," I poked Thomas. "Greenie here, has a new quest ahead of him,"

"Quit calling me Greenie. The girl's the Greenie now." He said, rubbing his arm. "Okay, Greenie." Alby sighed, clearly done with the conversation. "Go find some dinner-your terrible prison sentence of one day is over."

"One day was plenty," I sighed, and Thomas smiled at Alby. We left the slammer, and headed towards the kitchens.
