Chapter eighteen

"Alright chuck, let me help you up," Newt said, coming up from behind me. Gally extended his hand and I took it, while Newt did the same for chuck. "Hey, we got a celebration planned out for you, and tomorrow you get the tour!" I exclaimed.

"Celebration? To celebrate what?" He asked. I smiled, "you!"

A few of us chuckled while he looked confused. Gally went off to do builder stuff, so Newt showed chuck where he'll be sleeping.

I left to start the preparations.

Darkness was beginning to settle, and the fire was roaring in the fire pit. The doors had yet to close, but I had something for that.

Boys were starting to sit, they tried their best to look presentable, in a rugged way I guess. They sat down in the makeshift seat, crowding around the fires. I was getting some supplies for the bonfire, I had games planned, and all that was left was chuck.

My hair was braided into a side braid, and I had tried my best to look nice. I wrung my hands while I awaited Newt to escort chuck. I saw them in the distance, a tall, limping figure, and a small, waddling silhouette. I yelled at everyone to settle down.

When he stepped into the ring everyone burst into cheers. Chuck sheepishly smiled, and looked around, meeting my grinning eyes, before I trotted over.

I raised his arm, which cause a shower of cheers. Dropping his arm, I raised my hand. They quieted down a bit, completely when I shouted, "all right yah shanks, settle down, no matter how much of a blessing it is for you slintheads to lose your voices, let's try to avoid it," I laughed.

A chorus of laughs emerged and I chuckled along. I waved my arm, signaling to follow. The crowd trotted to the doors, the keepers in front then, chuck and I.

"Minho, the rock," I ordered. He smirked, then handed a rock to me, "your highness," he bowed, laughter a scattering through the group. "See, what an example, I expect that from each and everyone of you," I laughed.

I turned to chuck, "this is a rock from deep inside those corridors. And that, is the maze," I explained, he spun to the doors, eyes wide. "We've been put here by some shanks we call the creators. But no matter how miserable they try to make us, we will have fun!" I shouted, cheers arising.

"There are three rules, no slacking, no hurting another glader, and no leaving the maze," I said, "especially before the doors close," I added. Chuck turned expectantly toward me.

"Doors?" He asked, and I pointed up. "Impossible," he muttered.

"You'll see," I sing songed, chuckles in the crowd. I handed him the rock, "when I tell you, chuck it as far as you can," I laughed, then added, "pun intended,"

He held the rock while facing the doors. I waited.

And they didn't fail.

A rumbling emerged as the doors began to close, the right side converging towards then left.

Chuck leaped back, a small cry of surprise sounding. "It's ok!" I shouted. He walked forward, now staring in awe.

When the doors were 5 feet apart, I shouted, "NOW!"

The rock soared through the air, cheers egging it on. It flew, 5 feet, then 10, then 20, it disappeared in a clatter at 35 feet, and then the doors slammed shut.

The group roared, clapping chuck on the back. He laughed, a smile on his face. "ALRIGHT!" I yelled, and they quieted down. "Tomorrow morning, the runners'll go out there, get that rock, and write his name on the floor. Next month, the next greenie will do the same, and if he or... She... Passes the mark made by chucky here, then they get a prize. Chuck gets the prize for being to first ever. He gets... Drum roll please...." Everyone stomped, and I continued in a showy voice, "a deluxe hammock! Not like your average hammock. It's comfier, and as soft as can be. And it's all yours!"

Cheers roared as the hammock was presented, chuck doubled over in laughter.

The laughter abruptly stopped when an unearthly screech echoed through the maze walls, stiffening everyone.

Chuck turned to me, frightened, "what the hell was that?!"

I frowned, "grievers,"
