Chapter Twenty
It was about sun high by the time that Dewpaw and Dawn were ready to journey back to Clan territory. They had eaten their fill of fresh-kill and had drunk until they felt as though they might burst. There were no travelling herbs to sustain their hungry and thirst, but neither apprentice took any when journeying to the farm anyway.
"Are you excited?" asked Dewpaw, turning to face the calico she-cat, who was looking straight out of the barn.
"Excited and nervous," sighed the she-cat before turning around to face Willow, Bingo, Cheddar and Bandit (Inky and Angel nowhere to be seen).
"Thank you," she meowed, "for sheltering both me and Dewpaw and giving us prey. I will never forget the time I spent here, and hopefully I will be able to visit you again one day."
"It is okay," replied Bingo, stepping forward, "and you are always welcome here." He rubbed his jaw along Dawn's and did the same to Dewpaw, before stepping back to join the other farm cats again.
"Have a safe journey," purred Bandit, "I hope to see you again soon."
"I am sure the kits would love to see you again," laughed Cheddar and Dawn smiled, nodding her head.
"Where even are the kits?" asked Willow, looking around, "I would think they would want to say goodbye to you." Dawn blinked, surprised by the fact that the grey tabby she-cat would encourage her kits being near the former apprentice. There silence for a couple of heartbeats as the cats in the barn looked around.
"We want to join Dawn and Dewpaw's Clan," came a voice and the two young cats turned around to see Angel and Inky appear from a stalk of hale bales.
"Most certainly not!" cried Willow, "I am not going to let you both go live with some cats that have moss for brains!" Dewpaw opened his mouth to protest but Angel spoke before he could.
"We have thought about this for a little while," meowed the pale grey she-kit, "and it is meant for us. We honestly want to join them."
"No," Willow meowed firmly, "you are not going, and that is final."
"Please," begged Inky, "it is meant for us! We don't want to live here for the rest of our lives knowing that we could be on a bigger adventure. We really want to go, and to be honest, you can't stop us."
"Let them go Willow," sighed Bandit, looking over at his mate, "Inky is right, we can't stop them. It will be a better life for them anyway, rather than constantly being stuck at the barn." Willow looked torn, but she eventually nodded, eyes full of sadness as she went up and said goodbye to her kits.
"Bye mother, "Angel meowed softly, leaning in against the grey tabby she-cat, "I promise we will visit you."
"And we will be warriors when the time comes," squealed Inky, dancing around Bandit on the tip of her paws. Willow smiled slightly and the two kits said their last goodbyes to their parents, before turning to face Dawn and Dewpaw, excitement glittering in their large, kit eyes. Dawn smiled and swept her fluffy tail around the two kits, nudging them to the barn exit with their journey back to SpringClan already underway.
