Chapter Twenty Six
Whiskerstar bolted, a fear scent radiating powerfully off this coat, and Birdpaw spoke quickly to Barkheart, needing to go after her mentor.
"Go back to camp," she mewed hurriedly, "and get a patrol, a battle patrol. This is a battle which we need to win." The tabby tom nodded, thankfully not questioning why an apprentice was giving him orders and sprinted off to where the camp was. The she-cat spun around and ran off, following Whiskerstar's scent, which was mixed in with Flowerstem's stale scent. Slowly, the scents began to get stronger and there were more scents of other cats mixed in, most likely Maplestar's rogue followers. She passed the border and ran across unclaimed land, filled with Twoleg junk. There was an unpleasant stench, but the apprentice ignored it, too foucused on following the scent trails to where Flowerstem was, hopefully.
Eventually, she found Whiskerstar's strong scent, and she slowed down to a walk, creep cautiously between the Twoleg junk. Birdpaw pricked her ears and heard voice, familiar voices. Maplestar and Whiskerstar.
"Well," purred Maplestar, "hello Whiskerstar. Nice to see you here, we are long overdue for a catch up. What brings you here?"
"Give me back my medicine cat," growled the grey tom, "I am not in the mood for games."
"You mean your mate," corrected the rogue leader, and Birdpaw slunk forward until she could see the two toms. "I know she is expecting your kits. I don't have any need for stupid kits so I could just...finish them off now."
"Don't you dare touch them," growled Whiskerstar, sliding out his claws and digging them into the ground as he got into a battle stance. Maplestar laughed, but it was not a sweet laugh, it was full of malice and evilness. Birdpaw could feel fear radiating off her and tried to stay calm, Barkheart should be back soon, and he would have a whole battle patrol.
"Why shouldn't I?" asked the dark ginger tom, holding up a paw and inspecting his claws, "It wouldn't be the first time I have done it." The apprentice felt bile rise up in her mouth as she thought of what her former mentor was capable of.
"You are a monster," replied Whiskerstar but Maplestar just laughed, amber eyes glinting with hostility. Bushes rustled behind Birdpaw and she turned to see Barkheart with the battle patrol. There was Stagleap, Moonflower, Vineleaf, Emberpaw, Seedspot, Windpaw, Sparkclaw, Chiveleaf, Dewpaw, Foxleap, Lilysong and Clouddrop.
"Thank you Barkheart," whispered the apprentice and the tabby tom nodded to her, with Stagleap stepping forward.
"Are you okay?" he asked, licking his daughter on her head, watching Whiskerstar and Maplestar.
"I am okay," she replied, "but I don't know how much longer Whiskerstar is going to keep Maplestar talking." Whiskerstar pricked his ears, hearing their whispers and turned around quickly to see his Clanmates. The grey tabby turned back to face the rouge traitor and flicked his tail, the SpringClan warriors scrambling into position. Maplestar narrowed his eyes at the slight noise and lowered his paw, causing rogues to trickle out from the Twoleg junk. Birdpaw took a deep breath and her mentor sprung forward.
"SpringClan, attack!"
