Chapter 6

The jet landed with a thud, nearly throwing Kai forward out of her seat. She stood up as soon as the door opened and nearly fell over again. Steve caught hold of her upper arm, keeping her on her feet, his hand closing far too tightly on the scars that wrapped around her upper arm. Pain shot up through her shoulder.

"Get off me!" Kai snarled, shoving Steve away from her.

His face fell, instantly sending guilt through Kai. He can't have known about her markings, that grabbing her would hurt her. But she wasn't going to apologize, that wasn't her way.

Kai marched out of the jet, calling over her shoulder, "So Team what do you need me to do?"

"I don't know Kai, light the bad guys on fire maybe," Stark shouted, flying out over her head in his suit.

Light the bad guys on fire? That would suit Kai just fine. She grinned, rushing toward the sounds of carnage, ignoring Steve's shout to wait on back up. Already she was reaching deep down into the earth, feeling the seismic activity, the tectonic plates shifting. Earth Magic didn't come as naturally to Kai as Fire Magic did, but she knew enough to sense that if she made the mistake of causing too many tremors, it would set the Volcano off.

Catching sight of the people who were causing havoc, Kai froze. Her grey eyes widened, shock registering just a few seconds before sheer terror set in. She adruptly changed direction, her heels sending up a clud of dust as she spun on her heel and ducked down behind a collapsed house.

It was from this point she took a second to peer over the rubble at the enemy.  These were no agents of Thanos. They were mages, just like her. Hoods pulled down over their eyes, those without hoods wore masks. Their cloaks spun around them as they cast, swirling in red, black, blue, green; a tornado of colors. Just the sight of the faceless mages sent Kai shivering, the last time she'd seen them. Kai shuddered. This wasn't the time to be thinking about that.

She was officially in over her head, she'd been willing to risk her life to set fire to some of Thanos's men. But this. No. No way. She wasn't going to fight mages, risk alerting them to the fact that she was still alive. Kai had spent years staying hidden, and the minute she tried to do something decent she go thrown directly back into the crapstorm. Well not today. The Avengers weren't worth dying for. No one was. She'd learned long ago to put herself first. It was time to go.

Kai heard a cry of pain, followed by a thud. She risked peering higher over the collapsed wall, Steve was laying on the ground, surrounded by chunks of rubble. Several Mages were advancing on him, one sending a whirl of flames spinning around them as they walked. Kai had felt mage fire, she didn't want it touching anyone else. But she wasn't going to expose herself for Steve. Kai owed him nothing, barely knew him. And yet... Steve had been trying to make her feel a part of the team even though she'd been deliberately cold to him. He'd cared when he thought she'd tried to jump off a building. If she left him to burn here, what kind of monster did that make her?

Letting out a frustrated hiss, Kai turned around, shoving her back against the wall; her head clutched in her hands, fingers pulling at her hair. She wasn't going to risk her life for someone she didn't owe, wasn't going to expose herself to Mages she'd spent years hiding from. Except she was.
