Chapter 5

The mission alarms jolted Kai out of her fitful sleep. She'd been at Avengers tower for a while now, but she still hated the alarms that went off, and the walls that kept talking to her. She'd finally figure out that if she lowered the temperature enough in her room, it would short out the electronics in the walls. Which of course she did, not only because she didn't like the room trying to monitor her but also because she knew it would bother Stark. So she made it so cold in her room that she herself ended up curled up on the floor in her pile of blankets shivering at night.

Rolling out of her little nest of blankets, Kai stood up, stretching her arms and trying to blink the sleep out of her eyes. The noise. The Alarm. A mission! Finally a chance to get out of this god forsaken compound and let out some of the pent up energy she'd had running round inside her for what felt like forever. Kai slept in her clothes, after years of waking up in the middle of the night and having to relocate, she never undressed before she went to sleep. All she had to was grab her cloak off the bed, and fasten it around her shoulders as she sprinted out of the room.

Kai sprinted down the corridors, toward the quin jet, which is where she'd been told the team met before missions. She was joined by Steve who hurtled out of his room like a bullet and nearly slammed into her.

 "Sorry Kai."

"No Worries," Kai muttered, still working at the clasp of her cloak with one hand as she ran. "Any idea what's going on?"

 "Not Yet Miss. Sorry"

They slid around the corner, rushing into the hangar. Natasha and Clint were already strapping on their gear, Tony was probably inside the jet already.

"What's the situation Nat?" Steve asked.

Kai took this opportunity to finally finish buttoning the freaking clasp on her cloak, making a mental note to fix it later.

"We've got agents of what we suspect to be Thanos on an island, along with an unstable volcano," Clint said around a mouthful of protein bar.

  "Fun," Kai muttered.

Natasha, who was the only one to hear her, snorted loudly.

What Kai didn't voice was that having an elemental mage in a combat situation near a volcano was a terrible idea. All it would take was her using earth magic too close to set it off. But of course she said none of this. She would wonder why for years later why she didn't. Perhaps it was the stubborn immature side of her, not wanting to admit that she couldn't handle everything.

"Alright Team, let's get to it," Stark called from inside the jet.

Kai eyed the contraption distrustfully, waiting until the rest of the team had boarded before walking in behind them. There was no possible way this jet could get them there faster than a portal created by magecraft, but Kai wasn't about to offer to transport this whole team. That would expose secrets of hers that she didn't plan on making public.
