Chapter 64
By the time Coovers, Shockwave, Chairman Rose, Oleana, Ezria, and the pilot came out of Hammerlocke Stadium, most of the police had left to send Venarge and his security force to prison. Gunther and the other citizens that stayed to watch what was happening in the tower had left, with Gunther inviting everyone to coffee on the house at the Battle Café. Ash, Serena, Goh, Leon, and Sonia explained what happened at the tower to Looker and Officer Jenny. Coovers's face lit up to see Sonia again but his moment of joy was trampled as he realized Leon was leaning on her with his arm over her shoulder and Sonia was holding him with a side hug. He mentally prayed that it was nothing to fret over as Looker noticed him and Shockwave walking over to him with their prisoners.
"Ah, Chairman Rose. How kind of you to finally take time off your busy schedule to grace us with your presence," Looker said with a smirk. "And you brought your loyal secretary and her dear niece with you. How courteous. Who is the fourth person you brought with you, Coovers?"
"They were trying to get away on a helicopter. He's the pilot," Coovers said.
"Is he now? Well, that's enough cause for him to face a few charges," Officer Jenny said. "In any case, we'll take them off your plate, Officer Coovers."
"By all means. Shockwave, put them down," Coovers said.
Shockwave nodded and lowered Chairman Rose, Oleana, Ezria, and the pilot before releasing them from its psychic control. Officer Jenny and three other police officers took them and carried them to two police cars: Chairman Rose and Oleana were put in the back of the first one, and Ezria and the pilot were put in the second one. The pilot wept like a little child, but Ezria was still in such a state of shock that she didn't notice anything happening around her. Ash, Serena, Coovers, Leon, Sonia, Looker, Goh, Pikachu, Shockwave, and Cinderace watched the police drive away, their eyes on the prisoners until they were out of sight.
"So, Gwen said something about Zacian and Zamazenta coming and Eternatus getting captured by a regular Pokéball?" Coovers asked.
"Yup. Eternatus is right here," Goh said as he took out Eternatus's Pokéball.
"Fantastic," Coovers said. "So, how do we plan to seal it away?"
"That we will have to discuss with Gran," Sonia said. "Considering how she's known more about Eternatus longer than any of us, chances are she has a good way of keeping it from ever endangering lives again."
"I'm counting on it."
Everyone turned to see Timothy, Gwen, and Winnie exiting the stadium. The couple stopped holding hands before they went outside, not ready to reveal their relationship to everyone yet.
"I can't think of anyone more qualified to seal Eternatus away than Professor Magnolia," Gwen said.
"With all due respect, Ms. Weaver, I feel a Pokémon this dangerous should be kept in our secure facility," Looker said.
"No offense, Looker, but considering how your security wasn't able to stop Team Rocket from infiltrating your headquarters and stealing the Gieldanstone, I don't think we should take that chance," Timothy said. "This time, we should let the expert handle the dangerous thing, which will probably be hidden somewhere secret. Eternatus's whereabouts were a mystery for a long time. We should trust Professor Magnolia to make it a mystery again."
Gwen gave her boyfriend a sweet smile for taking her side. Looker furrowed his brow for a moment before he sighed and lowered his head.
"I suppose you're right, Timothy," Looker said.
"Great. Then let's head to Wedgehurst and bring Eternatus to Professor Magnolia," Serena said.
"Sounds good to me," Ash said before turning to Sonia. "We should also go to the Slumbering Weald and put the sword and shield back where you found them."
"I think that's a good idea," Leon said. "In fact, I'll go with you guys. I'm overdue for dropping by Wedgehurst."
Sonia gave Leon a look that made Coovers feel like a dagger had pierced his heart.
"What do you think you'll do after that, Leon?" Timothy asked.
Leon sighed and said, "I don't know. As Galar's Champion, I'm the last person of any leading authority with Chairman Rose in prison. I'll have to figure something out with Macro Cosmos and the Galar League. The Championship Cup will have to be postponed."
Timothy furrowed his brow and said, "That's disappointing. I was hoping I could compete after this is over. Maybe I should have considered that happening after we nabbed the league's founder."
"Yeah, having imprisoned two of the most prominent Gym Challengers this year would've made the championship less of a competition anyway," Leon said with a sad smile. "I hope you'll be here when the Championship Cup does happen, though, Timothy."
Timothy and Gwen looked at each other and smiled before Timothy said, "Honestly, I don't know if I'll make it this year, Leon. I have some things to do outside of Galar now that this is over. But I will be here next year and I'm still competing in the World Coronation Series, so you better watch out."
"It's a deal," Leon said.
"Hey, you better watch out for me too at the World Coronation Series," Ash said. "And Timothy, Riolu evolved into Lucario during my battle with Chairman Rose, so next time we meet, I want to have a battle. Lucario and Gengar against Odyssey and your Gengar."
"I'm looking forward to it, Ash," Timothy said with a competitive smirk.
"Alright, alright, enough with the rivalry talk," Sonia said. "Let's get in my car and go home already."
Goh and Cinderace's faces grew pale, and Goh chuckled nervously.
"T-t-thanks for the offer, Sonia, but you don't have to do that. We can take the train," Goh said. "Besides, it's getting late."
"Oh, don't be silly, Goh. We researched on the Darkest Day together, and you helped Gwen, Eddie, and I escape from Venarge. No need to be shy," Sonia said. "Besides, why should we take different means of transportation when we're all going to the same place? Just leave it to me, and I'll have us home in time for dinner."
"Dinner? I'm in!" Ash shouted with stars in his eyes. "I haven't eaten since breakfast!"
"Oh, Ash," Serena giggled. "Admittedly, I haven't eaten since breakfast either, so let's go."
"Count me in," Leon said.
"Pikachu," Pikachu said.
Goh let out incoherent words of protest before he hung his head in defeat. He returned Cinderace to spare it from the terror before he followed Leon, Ash, Serena and Pikachu to Sonia's car. Sonia took a couple of steps to follow them before she realized something and turned to Coovers with a guilty look. Coovers squirmed as Sonia awkwardly played with her hair.
"Listen...Coovers," Sonia began. "I had a great time with you at Circhester. I really did, but-"
"You don't have to say anything," Coovers said, putting on a brave face. "I get it. Your heart was always after another no matter how hard I tried."
"I'm sorry I got your hopes up," Sonia said. "We can still be friends, though, right?"
"Y-yeah, absolutely," Coovers said with a forced grin.
Sonia gave him a cute smile that warmed his heart one last time. She then turned to Gwen and said, "I'm glad we could solve the mystery together, Gwen. Your mom would be proud of you."
"Thank you, Sonia. So am I," Gwen said.
With that, Sonia went in the car and turned on the ignition, causing smoke to come out of the exhaust port. Timothy, Coovers, Gwen, Shockwave, and Winnie moved back, with Coovers forcing Looker back with his arm before Sonia slammed her foot on the gas pedal. Ash, Serena, Goh and Pikachu's screams and Leon laughter could be heard through the car windows as the car spun around several times, sped to the end of the street, and took a sharp left turn before driving away.
"Poor souls," Timothy said. "Sonia's lucky Officer Jenny wasn't here to see her driving like that."
"Yeah," Coovers said with a depressing sign.
Gwen patted Coovers's back and said, "It'll be alright Coovers. You'll find the one someday."
"Easy for you to say. You found yours," Coovers whined.
Timothy and Gwen's cheeks heated up, and they looked away, with Gwen rubbing her arm and Timothy scratching the back of his head. Winnie giggled with a teasing grin while Shockwave chuckled with its mouth closed.
"Well, you got me there," Gwen said bashfully.
Looker let out a short laugh and said, "Gotta say, Timothy, I never picked you for the romance type."
"Yeah, well, I wouldn't call myself that, but I'm learning for Gwen," Timothy said.
Looker hummed in acknowledgment before turning to Coovers with a serious face that made Coovers sweat.
"And as for you, Coovers, you have much to explain regarding leaving Hammerlocke without my consent, giving footage vital to your mission to the press, and starting a riot in the middle of the city," Looker began before smiling at Coovers. "That said, you did well using Timothy's connection with the chairman to collect evidence and you arrested him and his closest associates. I'm pleased."
Coovers let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and said, "Thank you, sir. I couldn't have done it without our friends, though."
Looker gave a low chuckle and said, "That's perfectly fine, Coovers. I think we can all agree that even officers of the International Police can count on friends to help us protect our world. Especially friends like Ash, Serena, Goh, and Timothy, of course."
"It's always a pleasure to be there for Coovers, Looker," Timothy said.
"And I appreciate that as always," Looker said. "Now, if you'll excuse us, we should be heading to Wyndon immediately. I want Coovers to write a full report back at headquarters."
Coovers hung his head and let out a childish groan. Timothy, Gwen, Shockwave, and Winnie chuckled before Coovers collected himself and turned to his friends with a smile.
"Well, it can't be helped now that the mission's over," Coovers said. "Timothy, it's been a delight traveling together again. Tell Electchu I said bye and thanks for its help. Same to Poliwrath, Odyssey, Blitzwing, and Knightblade."
"Gardevoir!" Shockwave shouted.
"Oh, yes. A special thanks to you for helping me arrest Chairman Rose and his close associates, Shockwave," Coovers said with a sheepish grin.
Timothy chuckled and said, "I'll tell them."
Coovers turned to Gwen next.
"Gwen, I can't thank you enough for being our guide, strictness aside, and for finding the Pokémon we needed to save us all," he said. "And please be patient with Timbo when it comes to romance."
"Don't worry, Coovers. I know what I'm getting into with Mr. Stinks-At-Flirting here," Gwen said.
Timothy gave his girlfriend a childish pout. Coovers knelt down to pet Winnie on the head.
"See ya, Winnie," Coovers said.
"Teddiursa," Winnie said with a cute smile.
With that, Coovers stood up and began walking to the train station with Looker. They waved at Timothy, Gwen, Shockwave, and Winnie, who waved back until they were out of sight. Now that they were the only souls left, Timothy returned Shockwave, and he and Gwen walked to the Pokemon Center hand in hand, with Winnie following. They went inside and walked over to the front desk, where Nurse Joy was typing on a computer.
"Nurse Joy, will you heal up our Pokémon, please?" Timothy asked.
"Certainly. Just put your Pokéballs on this tray," Nurse Joy said.
Timothy and Gwen put their Pokéballs on the tray, and Gwen put Winnie in its Pokéball before giving it to Nurse Joy. After Nurse Joy went to the back door with the Pokéballs, Timothy and Gwen went to the lobby to sit on one of the sofas. They rested their backs against the sofa and simultaneously let out heavy sighs, relieved to relax after a long day. They sat silently for half a minute before Timothy turned his head to Gwen.
"So, Rose is finally stopped and put behind bars," he said.
"Mmm-hmmm," Gwen said, with her eyes closed and her head facing the ceiling.
"Are you happy it's finally over?" Timothy asked.
"Mmm-hmmm," Gwen replied.
"How does it feel to solve the mystery of the Darkest Day and figure out how to stop Eternatus?" Timothy asked.
Gwen opened her eyes, turned her head to Timothy, and smiled.
"It's a dream come true," she said. "Centuries of mystery, and I found out the truth with our friends. I just wish my mom was here."
"I think Sonia's right that she would have been very proud of you," Timothy said.
Gwen's smile grew, and she placed her hand on top of Timothy's. The couple stared at each other in silence until Gwen's smile faded to a disappointed frown.
"Speaking of which, I have something for you," she said.
She opened her backpack and took out the two halves of the Master Ball. Timothy took the broken Pokéball, staring at it in disbelief.
"What in the world happened to Master Ball?" Timothy asked.
"Eternatus destroyed it just as Serena threw it at Eternatus," Gwen said. "More to the point, though, you promised not to use the Master Ball unless you felt there was no other way."
"Uh, well, Eternatus was about to be fully revived, and there was no telling if you and Sonia would come with Zacian and Zamazenta in time. Kinda looked like there was no other choice," Timothy said. "Besides, I don't think it counted when I gave the Master Ball to Serena for her to use it."
"Watch it, buster. No woman likes her boyfriend twisting their promises to her," Gwen said warningly.
"Alright, alright. I'm sorry," Timothy said. "Why were you so worried about me using the Master Ball anyway? Were you that scared it wouldn't work like it did with Arceus?"
Gwen flinched as Timothy pressed the subject. She looked away and scooted closer to Timothy, putting her hand on her necklace.
"You remember when we all had nightmares on our way here for your eighth badge?" Gwen asked.
Timothy nodded.
"I dreamt we were all at a picnic at Wedgehurst, then Eternatus came and attacked the town," Gwen said. "You, Coovers, and all of our Pokemon came to fight with you planning to catch Eternatus with the Master Ball. I begged you not to go, but you kissed me and promised that you were coming back to finish the kiss. You got Eternatus to go inside the Master Ball, but it broke free and then vaporized everyone but me. After that, I...I was afraid I'd lose you and our friends just like my mom."
Silence overtook the couple as Timothy processed Gwen's explanation. He put down the pieces of the Master Ball and gently turned Gwen's head to face him. Gwen's face turned red at the feeling of Timothy's hand on her cheek, but she focused on Timothy giving her a warm smile.
"I'm not going anywhere. Okay? I will stay by your side no matter what comes our way. I promise," Timothy said. "That is if you want to always stay by my side too."
Gwen's heart grew warm. She scooted closer to Timothy until their hips touched and leaned in for a kiss. Timothy's face turned beet red, and he felt multiple Butterfree in his stomach as Gwen took his hand that held her cheek and she rested her head on his shoulder.
"I want that more than anything," Gwen whispered. "And I will hold you to keep your promise to the fullest. One vacation in Alola and visiting my mom's hometown as a start."
"That's fair," Timothy said. "Although, I was wondering if we could drop by Stow-on-Side first."
Gwen lifted her head to look at Timothy, confused.
"What for?" She asked.
"I thought we could go to Joses and Tatiana's for our victory against Chairman Rose. Joses and Tatiana will want to give us a feast of spaghetti and garlic bread fit for legendary heroes," Timothy said. "Also, I'd like to see the statues that were hidden behind the mural."
Gwen stared at Timothy for a moment before she smiled and nodded.
"It will be nice to look at the statues without the region in danger and bad guys going after us," Gwen said. "I wouldn't mind drawing it too."
Timothy smirked and said, "I thought you'd say something like that. And after visiting your mom's hometown, I was thinking we go to Hoenn to see if the Master Ball can be fixed and give battling my way up to Steven another go."
Gwen rolled her eyes and said, "Well, if you must, but I hope our future journeys won't always be about your dream."
"Of course not. I'm still hoping you'll find a new dream while we're traveling," Timothy said.
Gwen frowned and asked, "Do you think I can find a dream that doesn't interfere with our traveling together?"
"We won't know until we try," Timothy said. "It's a big world beyond the Galar region, and I want you to see it with me."
Gwen smiled sweetly again and said, "Then see it all together with our Pokémon."
Timothy nodded, and he and Gwen leaned their heads forward for another kiss. Gwen wrapped her free arm around Timothy's while still holding his hand before resting her head on his shoulder again. Timothy smiled and rested his head on top of Gwen's. The couple closed their eyes and began to doze off, letting the fullness of the day take its toll as their time together had just begun.
