Chapter 59
Venarge struggled to keep his cool. He was relishing being head of security to the point of being able to tell Leon himself to go away. And yet, when Timothy arrived just as Chairman Rose predicted, Coovers and Goh were found with them. Venarge couldn't believe his accomplishment for redemption was undone. Whether Gwen called Timothy so he could rescue his police officer friend or Timothy and his teenage friends just happened to be nearby while Oleana's subordinates were heading to Hammerlocke, Venarge didn't know, but he was determined to convince Chairman Rose and Oleana that it was the latter.
If that wasn't enough, there was an earthquake and a massive beam burst through the main tower, creating a large hole. After that, Leon flew toward the hole with a raven-haired teenage boy with a Pikachu using Charizard and a Dragonite, respectively. Venarge ordered security to attack them with their Pokémon, but their targets managed to get inside. Venarge wanted to break something, frustrated that people got inside Hammerlocke under his protection.
The only silver lining was Timothy and Coovers were still kept from trying to get through the stadium's defenses. Regardless, Venarge wished he could take a handful of men, storm the Pokémon Center, and drag Timothy and his friends to the stadium as hostages instead of staying to protect the entrance as ordered. Ezria would be disappointed that her crush was beaten so easily, but that only made Venarge want to do it even more. It would be as though he was the sole reason Chairman Rose's operation was protected, making him come out better than the Markenel twin the chairman always favored.
Venarge's train of thought was disturbed when a beam burst out, creating another hole in the tower, and Eternatus came out, flying to the top of the tower. Galar Particles flew toward the Legendary Pokémon in multiple directions. Venarge didn't know whether or not to be concerned that Eternatus had broken free. He hoped he would get a call from Oleana to come to the chairman's aid, but he figured Ezria was already on it, and even if she wasn't, Venarge wanted to keep a close eye on his enemies hiding in the Pokémon Center. He also wanted to keep an eye on the people and Pokémon watching Eternatus gather Galar Particles in case they start to panic.
A few minutes later, as Eternatus began collecting Galar Particles, several Corviknight carrying carriages came from the east and landed on the street. The League Staff from Stow-on-Side and Ballonlea came out, followed by Agent Porter, and the four agents Venarge led to Stow-on-Side. Agent Porter was half awake, having only recently woken up from the effects of Noctowl's Hypnosis. Venarge gave the men sullen looks as his aunt's subordinates walked over to him.
"Sir, we've got trouble," the agent with the Steelix said while the Corviknight flew away.
"Oh? And what gave you that idea? The fact that Eternatus has escaped the hangar or how you imbeciles lost my hostages?" Venarge asked.
"Watch your mouth, boy. You let the women escape and they probably called Timothy Durbin to rescue his buddies," Agent Porter said.
"And you couldn't beat them even with your Garbodor Gigantamaxed," Venarge pointed out. "And by the way, Uncle Rose made me head of security, so show some respect."
"Well, bully for you, but that doesn't excuse the fact that we lost our captives and they could be anywhere," Agent Porter said.
"They're not anywhere. They're in the Pokémon Center," Venarge said, pointing at the Pokémon Center. "We have them pinned there to keep them from trying to get in. I suggest you get your Pokémon healed up and finish your job."
"I don't answer to anyone but your aunt, boy," Agent Porter said. "Now, lower the bridge and -"
Just then, Venarge, several agents, and League Staffs' Rotom Phones went off. Everyone looked at each other in confusion before they took out their phones and opened the news app. The app instantly took them to a live stream of the reporter whose helicopter was shot down standing in front of the Pokémon Center.
"We come to you live with more breaking news," she said. "We've received a video from Gym Challenger Timothy Durbin of his girlfriend and our beloved idol, Ezria Markenel, explaining who the mysterious Pokémon is. Fair warning, the information is disturbing."
The news cut to the video of Timothy and Ezria at the Energy Plant. Venarge's eyes widened and the agents and League Staff whispered amongst each other as they huddled in groups to watch the news from anyone who had their Rotom Phones out. Venarge looked up from his phone and saw the citizens on their phones, watching the news together with their Pokémon. His unease grew as the video played the part where Timothy expressed his concern.
"And how long does Rose expect to need you to fight rampaging Pokémon all over the region?" Timothy asked.
"As long as it takes to control Eternatus permanently. If it escapes this plant and Leon fails to capture it, it'll be up to us to catch it with a Pokéball and get it to submit to Uncle Rose's wishes."
"Are there others Rose has recruited to do this?" Timothy asked.
Ezria looked away bashfully while still holding Timothy's hand, and Knightblade and Doublade looked at each other with excitement in their eyes. The raspberry-haired woman played with her hair, and her cheeks turned red as she turned her head back to Timothy.
"Well, that's the other reason I wanted to bring you here. You see, when we were about to pass by Hammerlocke on our way to Circhester, I had a talk with Uncle Rose. We agreed that after you and I won all of our gym badges I will show you this place and ask you something very important. Timothy, I - we would like you to stay here in Galar. We want you to be a part of the Macro Cosmos family and battle Dynamax Pokémon with Leon, Venarge, and me. Save the future of our beloved region together."
There was a long pause before Timothy's voice was heard again.
"I'm sorry, Ezria, but I'm not okay with this."
Ezria's eyes widened, and she let go of Timothy's hand.
"Y-you mean you won't battle to protect the Galar?" She asked.
"No, I mean, I'm not okay with what Rose is doing," Timothy said. "You're talking about constantly risking lives while trying to absorb energy from a Pokémon."
"I know how it sounds, but for the greater good, sacrifices must be made. You know that better than anyone," Ezria said. "You led trainers and Pokémon to risk their lives to save the entire world."
"That's different. Everyone was in danger of a force of evil that could destroy everyone's way of life and didn't care about anyone but themselves whether we fought them or not. You're claiming to help people and Pokémon in your region, yet you're willing to risk their homes and their lives while trying to contain a Pokémon that may be too powerful for anyone to control."
"And lives will be ruined in the future if we don't fix the situation," Ezria said. "Besides, if Eternatus causes any Pokémon to Dynamax and go on a rampage, we'll be there to stop them. Venarge and I grew strong together with our Pokémon to prepare for this. Leon won't be Champion anymore when you or I beat him at the Championship Cup, but he's still a trainer of great skill and he won't hesitate to protect Galar to the end. And you? You are the best out of all of us. You've won Pokémon Leagues, beaten a Champion, and saved the world from Team Rocket when it looked like nothing in the universe could stop them with Arceus in their hands. In over a month, you've battled more Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon on the battlefield and in the Wild Area than others will ever do in their lifetimes. Together, we will stop the rampaging Pokémon before they can create a dent on a road or break a lamppost and you can instantly catch Eternatus with the Master Ball if it escapes. Don't you want that, Timothy? To be there to prove everything will be alright? To help people and Pokémon smile and continue pursuing their dreams, knowing that everything is okay because you're there for them? To be a hero of Galar?"
The citizens were gasping and talking to each other in disbelief. Many fans were crushed to hear Ezria argue against Timothy's concerns. Their Pokémon tried to comfort them, but they knew nothing could ease the feeling of betrayal. The citizens and their Pokémon heard the doors to the Pokémon Center slide open, and they looked from their phones to see Timothy, Coovers, Serena, Goh, Electchu, and Shockwave coming out with the reporter and her cameraman following. The chairman's people prepared to order their Pokémon to attack until they realized their targets were too close to the citizens. The trainers and their Pokémon walked until they were standing a few feet away from the crowd and turned to face Venarge and his security. Venarge clenched his teeth, glaring daggers at Timothy and Coovers as the reporter held her microphone up to Timothy.
"Mr. Durbin, judging by the video, I understand you recorded it knowing your girlfriend would reveal this plot to you. Is that correct?" The reporter asked.
"Ezria and I were never a couple. She only claimed that we were," Timothy said. "That said, I was told from a valuable source that Chairman Rose has knowingly been risking lives for his operation."
The reporter turned to Coovers.
"And with me also is Officer Coovers Woodward of the International Police," she said. "Officer Coovers, were you assigned to get proof of this operation?"
"That's correct. My superior has already arrested Chairman Rose's staff in Rose Tower. He should be on his way to Hammerlocke, but he might not arrive before Eternatus is fully restored," Coovers said.
"And what happens if this Eternatus is fully restored?" The reporter asked.
"Eternatus will cause Pokémon all over Galar to rampage, destroying everything in their path. In short, Eternatus will recreate the Darkest Day," Coovers said.
The citizens gasped and stepped away from the stadium in fear of Eternatus. Venarge's hands turned into balls of fists, and he growled.
"That is private Macro Cosmos business! You are liable for several lawsuits!" He barked.
"I seriously doubt you're gonna have a legal case given the circumstances," Goh said.
"And besides, you just proved you're a part of this dangerous operation, too," Serena said with a smug look.
The crowd gasped again, realizing Serena was right. Venarge's anger melted into embarrassment, with his cheeks turning pink.
"So what?! You're still meddling in matters that aren't your business! And you're never getting in this stadium to stop us!" He shouted.
"You're right. We're not getting in by ourselves," Timothy said before turning to the reporter. "May I have your mic for a moment, please?"
The reporter looked at Timothy, confused, and hesitated before she gave him her mic. Timothy gestured to the cameraman to come over, and he turned to face the crowd. Coovers, Serena, Goh, Electchu, and Shockwave stood beside him as he cleared his throat.
"People of Hammerlocke, it's true I played a notable role in defeating Team Rocket and saving Pokémon that many of you hold dear, but despite what Ezria might have told you, the world wasn't saved by one man alone!" Timothy shouted. "We won because we stood together despite the odds against us! Nothing I did two years ago was possible without my friends! My Pokémon! My family!"
Coovers, Serena, Electchu, and Shockwave smiled at Timothy, touched by his declaration.
"As of this moment, we are all in danger of Eternatus' wrath! Perhaps Chairman Rose is right that Galar will be out of power many years from now, but if Eternatus isn't defeated, there won't be a future! Right now, Leon and our friend, Ash, are inside Hammerlocke Stadium, fighting to stop this! There is a chance that two more of our friends have found a way to subdue Eternatus and my special Pokéball might contain it, but none of that is possible as long as the chairman's people keep us from trying! I call to you not as a leader or a hero, but as someone in need: help me and my friends. Let us fight together to save us all!"
"Yes, please help us!" Coovers said, leaning into the microphone.
"Please help us fight so we can help Ash and Leon!" Serena shouted.
"We really need your help," Goh said.
"Raichu," Electchu said.
"Gardevoir," Shockwave said.
They waited for the citizens to make a response, but nobody stepped forward. The people of Hammerlocke and their Pokémon were too afraid to take a step toward Eternatus and the army of League Staff and agents led by one of the most skilled trainers in their region. Venarge grinned deviously as he watched Timothy, Coovers, Serena, Goh, Electchu, and Shockwave become discouraged.
"What do we do now?" Goh asked.
Timothy bit his lip, and Coovers looked away from Goh, unable to give him an answer. Just then, from among the crowd, Gunther stepped up, walking past the trainers to stand in front. Venarge and his forces laughed at the café owner, but Gunther paid no mind. He was in a state of shock and heartbreak, staring at the stadium as though it were Ezria herself looking down upon him. Gunther wiped the tears from his eyes with his arm and took a deep breath before taking out two Pokéballs.
"Milcery, Sinistea, come on out!" He shouted.
He tossed the Pokéballs into the air, and Milcery came out, followed by a creature that looked like a chipped teacup carrying a purple liquid. Timothy, Coovers, Serena, Goh, Electchu, and Shockwave stared at Gunther's second Pokémon in confusion, and Timothy took out his Rotom Phone.
"Sinistea, the Black Tea Pokémon. A Ghost type. The swirl pattern in this Pokémon's body is its weakness. If it gets stirred, the swirl loses its shape, and Sinistea gets dizzy," Rotom said.
Venarge and the chairman's people laughed even louder at the sight of Gunther's small Pokémon. Even Venarge's Pokémon laughed with Obstagoon holding its gut, Alakazam rolling on the floor, Toxtricity leaning on Rhyperior, and Marowak leaning on its bone for support. But even with all his enemies laughing, Gunther continued to put on a brave face with his Pokémon.
"I consider one person stepping up a miracle, but George of the Battle Café? I can't say I saw that coming," Venarge said.
"It's Gunther," Gunther said.
"I don't care," Venarge said. "You're fooling yourself if you think your pathetic Pokémon will help them at all."
"Maybe so, but it's better than to live in fear," Gunther said. "Everyone here has looked up to the people behind all of this: Ezria, Chairman Rose, even you Venarge. We saw you as the best of us. Immortal faces of our region, and you break our hearts. Everyone here has been afraid of all the earthquakes, the red lights, and Pokémon rampaging. Ezria told us there was nothing to fear, and yet she was cleaning up the mess she supported."
The people and Pokémon in the crowd looked at each other and murmured words of agreement. Gunther continued.
"How do you think that makes any of us feel? The trainer, the person I...I loved. the woman who made me happy just to see her drop by my café and give me a sweet smile isn't the angel that I - that we worship - has done this to us?"
Fans in the crowd shouted words of agreement.
"So Ezria isn't as perfect as you thought. What of it?" Agent Porter said. "She still loves every one of you and follows Chairman Rose with all of you in mind."
The agents and League staff nod in agreement with their Pokémon.
"You call this love?! Treating us like collateral damage?!" Gunther shouted with tears in his eyes and his voice cracking.
"I don't expect you citizens to understand and I doubt Ezria, Aunt Oleana, and especially Uncle Rose would either," Venarge said. "If he or Ezria were here, they would say something along the lines of us, the people of Macro Cosmos, have a duty to do what's best for all of us and our future, whether you appreciate it or not."
"Who are you to decide what's best for us?!" A woman shouted, stepping up. "How can we trust you when you use your Pokémon to stop the danger you're causing?!"
"She's right!" A teenage girl said, walking over to stand beside Gunther. "Ezria was everything I wanted to be as a trainer and person!"
"Why should I be afraid to let my children go out and play, not knowing if they will be safe?!" another man asked.
The people began expressing their anger and devastation against Chairman Rose, Ezria, and Venarge. Before Venarge realized it, more people came to join Gunther. Some he and Timothy recognized as former participants of the Gym Challenge. They took out their Pokémon from their Pokéballs as they walked past Timothy, Coovers, Serena, Goh, Electchu, and Shockwave. The former four looked at each other and smiled before taking out their Pokéballs. Poliwrath, Odyssey, Blitzwing, Samurott, Klinklang, Krookodile, Zoroark, Braviary, Chandelure, Delphox, Pancham, Sylveon, Poliwhirl, Absol, Gengar, Raboot, and Bunnelby came out of their containers. All of them at full health and ready to fight.
Venarge, Agent Porter, the other agents, the League Staff, and all of their Pokémon grew uneasy as so many citizens and Pokémon stepped up that the crowd formed into a mob that covered half the street. Timothy smirked and handed the mic back to the reporter as he, Coovers, Serena, Goh, and their Pokémon scooted to step in front of the crowd.
"Looks like the people of Galar have spoken Venarge," Coovers said.
"S-so what? You are still no match for the might of Macro Cosmos!" Venarge barked.
"Maybe not, but we're not giving up until the end," Serena said.
The mob uttered words of agreement and Venarge turned his eyes to Gunther.
"Do you really want to stop an operation Ezria worked so hard for you? You'll break her heart for sure," Venarge said.
"If we do, then she'll know how we feel," Gunther said bitterly.
The agents and League Staff grew uncomfortable with so many citizens their boss cared for wanting to fight them. Venarge clenched his teeth, looking daggers at the café owner. Agent Porter felt a drop of sweat coming down from the top of his head and leaned into Venarge's ear.
"What do we do?" he asked.
Venarge kept his glare on Gunther as though he didn't hear the subordinate. He then glanced at the other citizens that had their Pokémon out with Timothy, Coovers, Serena, and Goh. Some had fully evolved Pokémon but many Pokémon were small and showed little hint that they had battled before. Venarge knew attacking the citizens would cause chaos but he had a job Chairman Rose himself gave to him and he was going to keep his enemies out of Hammerlocke Stadium no matter what it took.
"Attack their Pokémon starting with the smaller ones. Scare them away," he said.
Agent Porter's face turned severe, and he nodded before turning to the rest of the chairman's forces.
"Attack their Pokémon!" he shouted.
The agents and League staff pointed at the crowd, giving their Pokémon commands. Many of the citizens gasped alarmingly until Timothy, Coovers, Serena, and Goh stepped up.
"Electchu, Thunder! Poliwrath, Hydro Pump! Odyssey, Aura Sphere! Shockwave, Disarming Voice!"
"Samurott, Hydro Pump! Krookodile, Sandstorm! Klinklang, Flash Cannon! Chandelure, Fire Spin!"
"Delphox, Flamethrower! Pancham, Stone Edge! Sylveon, Swift! Poliwhirl, Surf! Gengar, Night Shade!"
"Raboot, Ember! Bunnelby, Mud Shot!"
All of their Pokémon with ranged attacks unleashed their moves and collided with their enemy attacks, creating an explosion covering half the street in black smoke. Venarge and his army covered their eyes as they were caught in a whirlwind of sand. A train of large, light blue stones from the ground knocked several Pokémon off their feet. When the smoke cleared and Coovers saw their enemies distracted by Krookodile's move, he turned to the civilians.
"Now's your chance!" he shouted.
The citizens charged toward their opponents, commanding their Pokémon as they ran. Timothy, Coovers, Serena, and Goh smirked at each other and nodded before they joined in. Before the enemy knew it, they were attacked by a swarm of Pokémon. The citizens charged toward their opponents, commanding their Pokémon as they ran. Venarge's Pokémon held their own, brutally taking down opponent Pokémon, leaving their owner to return their partners and run in fright. His forces, however, were not so fortunate. Even if the citizen's Pokémon weren't trained or the agents and League staff's Pokémon were resistant to their attacks, the intense amount of opponents attacking and the sandstorm disturbing their sight made it difficult to fight back. Eventually, a handful of League Staff members ran out of Pokémon, and they lost their nerve due to the sheer number of citizen Pokémon. One of them took out their phone and dialed a number.
"Lower the bridge! Lower the bridge!" He screamed into his phone.
"Belay that order! Stand your ground!" Venarge shouted.
But the staff inside the stadium couldn't hear him through the staff member's phone. The drawbridge went down with a slam, and the League Staff members ran inside. Some other staff members noticed the drawbridge was drawn and also retreated.
Goh was close to the drawbridge as some of the enemies ran. Bunnelby was unconscious, but Raboot took out a League Staff member's Ferroseed after constantly using Ember. The staff member returned her Pokémon and ran inside the stadium, unwittingly giving Goh a chance to get in. Goh looked around to find Timothy, Coovers, and Serena, but he couldn't see any of them through the sandstorm and they were likely too far away to reach. Goh looked back between the lowered drawbridge and the fighting inside the sandstorm until he decided to take the opportunity to find Ash and Leon.
"Come on, Raboot! Let's go!" Goh shouted.
"Raboot," Raboot replied with a nod.
Goh returned Bunnelby before he and Raboot crossed the bridge and went into the stadium. A few seconds later, Venarge looked back from the fight just in time to see two agents retreat. He growled in frustration and turned to his Corviknight, who was battling two Machoke.
"Corviknight, fly up and send the sand back to them now!" Venarge screamed.
Corviknight dodged the two Machoke's fists and flew up until it was above the sandstorm. The Raven Pokémon flapped its wings repeatedly until it created a gust of wind that blew the sand storm away from Venarge and his army. Timothy, Coovers, Serena, the citizens, and their Pokémon covered their faces as the sand blew past them. When the whirlwind disappeared, half the street was covered with sand and the enemy was eager to fight back.
"Raise the drawbridge and never lower it again unless I command it!" Venarge ordered before pointing at the mob. "Now, take out every Pokémon that dares to stand against the chairman!"
Uplifted with the sandstorm cleared, the agents and League Staff shouted orders for their Pokémon to attack. Two Steelix slithered ahead and began smacking citizen Pokémon away with Iron Tail. The citizens screamed and began running to their homes or the Pokémon Center.
"Shockwave, use Psychic!" Timothy shouted.
"Gengar, use Psychic also!" Serena shouted.
"Krookodile, Earthquake!" Coovers shouted.
With Shockwave and Gengar's eyes glowing, the Steelix were caught in their psychic grasp while Krookodile struck the ground with its foot, creating an earthquake that made the Steelix fall flat on their fronts and sent some of the Pokémon charging behind them flying back. When the citizens who still had conscious Pokémon realized the Iron Snake Pokémon were incapacitated, they ran with their Pokémon to meet the enemy again. The two Steelix raised their heads and glowered at Timothy, Coovers, and Serena's Pokémon, wanting payback.
As the battle raged on, Coovers spotted Venarge with his Pokémon beating the citizen's Pokémon ruthlessly. Venarge began to cackle as his opponents returned their Pokémon and ran as though they were in danger of Venarge's Pokémon attacking them next. He looked at Samurott, Klinklang, Krookodile, Zoroark, Braviary, and Chandelure and they all glared at Venarge's Pokémon. Coovers smirked for a moment before he turned back to Venarge, silently agreeing with his Pokémon. It was time to settle the score.
"Timothy, Serena, I need you guys to take on the Steelix yourselves, then aid anyone you can. I'm going after Venarge," he said.
"Understood," Timothy said. "Serena, you focus on the one on the left. I'll take care of the one on the right."
"Got it," Serena said.
Timothy and Serena's parties each ganged up on a Steelix, giving Coovers and his Pokémon the chance to run past them. Samurott, Klinklang, Krookodile, Zoroark, Braviary, and Chandelure took out agent and League Staff Pokémon that got in their way while their eyes were fixed on Venarge's Pokémon. Venarge's eyes turned to Coovers just as his Pokémon took down a Swirlix, a Politoad, a Mareep, a Tyrogue, a Magnamite, and a Togetic. The maroon-haired trainer ignored the trainers returning their Pokémon and running as he, Obstagoon, Marowak, Alakazam, Toxtricity, Corviknight and Rhyperior stared back at Coovers and his team as though they were the only opponents on the street. Coovers and his Pokémon stopped walking a few yards away from Venarge and his Pokémon as both sides glared at each other in silence, their minds closed from the rest of the world.
"So nice of you to come and be my hostage again," Venarge said smugly.
"No, I've come to put you back in your nice, cold cell," Coovers said. "If I have to drag you back to the station by your short hair with you kicking and screaming like a baby, I'm game."
"Don't toy with me!" Venarge barked. "Obstagoon, Marowak, Alakazam, Toxtricity, Corviknight, Rhyperior, get them!"
"Klinklang, Thunder Wave on Venarge's team! Samurott, Hydro Pump on Rhyperior! Krookodile, Earthquake on Toxtricity!" Coovers shouted.
Klinklang released rings of yellow electricity from its body and they hit Obstagoon, Marowak, Alakazam, Toxtricity, and Corviknight. The rings did nothing to Rhyperior or Toxtricity and they had a moment to be amused with Klinklang's move before a stream of water hit Rhyperior in the face and several shockwaves knocked Toxtricity off its feet. The Punk Pokémon struggled to stay conscious and Venarge growled in frustration again like a child throwing a tantrum.
"Knock it off with that Thunder Wave!" He screamed.
"You don't decide what your opponent does in a Pokémon battle, little baby," Coovers mocked. "Besides, I don't entirely feel as strongly about training your Pokémon to only have attacks as people like you and Timothy."
Venarge clenched his teeth with his face as red as his hair.
"I'll make you regret that! Get them!" He shouted.
Coovers chuckled with his mouth closed, amused that all his short-tempered opponent could do was repeat his first command. Venarge's Pokémon charged again. He pointed at his opponent's team and his Pokémon charged to meet them. Braviary and Corviknight faced each other in the air again. Klinklang avoided Alolan Marowak's Fire type moves and used Thunder to keep Marowak at a distance. Alakazam used Psychic to send Chandelure crashing into the ground. As the Luring Pokémon grew weaker from the Psychic type attack, Toxtricity attempted to finish it with Discharge, only for Krookodile to step in front of Chandelure and take on Toxtricity's attack unharmed. Krookodile stomped its foot and Alakazam lifted its teammate up with Psychic before Krookodile's Earthquake could severely damage Toxtricity again. As Alakazam focused on aiding Toxtricity, Rhyperior defended it from Zoroark's Knock Off, using its horn to hold Zoroark off.
At the center of the fight, Samurott and Obstagoon dueled against one another. Samurott fought with two light-blue seamitars coming from the sheaths on its arms. Obstagoon used its fists to block Samurott's attacks and attempt to swing at its opponent's face. They kept their eyes on each other as they clashed furiously as though they, more than any other Pokémon, were there to represent Coovers and Venarge as their respective partners.
Braviary attacked Corviknight with all its might whenever it had an opening, ignoring the pain from the damage it took. As the battle raged on, however, Braviary struggled to keep up with its raven-like opponent. It was desperate to avoid the battle between it and Corviknight becoming a repeat of their battle at Stow-on-Side. But try as Bravairy might, in a manner fitting to its species being referred to as the Valiant Pokémon, Corviknight was bigger, better trained, and had a higher defense. Eventually, Corviknight avoided an Iron Head and then rammed Braviary from above with Brave Bird, forcing Braviary crashing onto the cement. Corviknight let out a proud caw as Braviary lay on the ground, battered and unconscious. Venarge looked at Coovers' fallen Pokémon with a Cheshire Cat grin.
"Who's the little baby now, welp?" he mocked.
"You," Coovers answered without missing a beat. "Krookodile, use Sandstorm!"
Krookodile stomped its foot once more, and Venarge's Pokémon were caught in a whirlwind of sand. Marowak, Alakazam, Toxtricity, and Rhyperior covered their eyes, but Obstagoon ignored the sand, refusing to gaze away from Samurott. Venarge shielded his face from the sand, but his boastful face didn't drop.
"You've forgotten what happened last time! Corviknight, blow it away!" Venarge shouted.
Coovers sniggered.
"No, I didn't," he said. "Klinklang, Krookodile, Chandelure, bring it down!"
Corviknight took off and sent the flying sand back to Coovers' side of the battle, not knowing it left itself an easy target. Before Venarge or his Pokémon knew it, Corviknight was screaming in agony as it was hit by blue balls of fire, rocks, and bolts of electricity. Alakazam, Marowak, Toxtricity, and Rhyperior tried to counter to rescue their comrade but yellow sparks appeared around the bodies of the former two, and Zoroark used Night Daze to keep Rhyperior away from its friends. With one final hit in the face with a rock, Corviknight spun and hit the ground, limp. Venarge stared at it, taken aback as Coovers returned Braviary.
"Timothy taught me many things about Pokémon battling and I've seen him battle enough times to know when to use your opponent's pride against them," Coovers said.
Venarge did nothing but glare as he returned Corviknight. While Obstagoon kept his focus on Samurott, Venarge's other remaining Pokémon glowered, sharing his rage from being outwitted. Shouting battle cries, the fight continued, many of them still attempting to take out opponents they were strong against. Meanwhile, Timothy and Serena's Pokémon finished off the Steelix and began aiding Gunther and other civilians in their fight.
Eventually, the battle between Coovers and Venarge was split into three sections. While Samurott and Obstagoon dueled, two double battles had formed; Krookodile and Zoarak fighting Rhyperior and Toxtricity, and Klinklang and Chandelure facing Marowak and Alakazam. Chandelure used Shadow Ball and Will-O-Wisp at Alakazam, giving it no opportunity to concentrate on using Psychic. The Psi Pokémon tried to fight back using Psybeam, but Chandelure dodged or used its moves to cancel them out. Marowak flipped and spun to avoid Klinklang's Discharge and Flash Cannon, waiting for the right moment to strike. Krookodile and Rhyperior threw rocks and stones at each other using Rock Slide and Rock Blast, respectively. Zoroark and Toxtricity kept arm's length from each other, watching each other as carefully as they threw fists or swiped with claws.
"Rhyperior, use Bulldoze!" Venarge commanded.
Rhyperior stopped firing rocks and braced Krookodile's stones as it stomped on the ground. The Drill Pokémon's stomp created shockwaves that knocked Krookodile and Zoroark off their feet. Seeing its chance, Toxtricity's right fist became surrounded with purple energy, its left fist became surrounded with fire and threw several hooks at Zoroark's face just as it was about to get up. At the same time, Rhyperior sent Krookodile back using Smack Down and then rammed Zoroark in the gut with Horn Drill, just as Zoroark retaliated by hitting Toxtricity with Night Daze and Fury Swipe. With Zoroak on the ground holding its gut, Toxtricity and Rhyperior punched and threw rocks at it until it fell limp.
"Krookodile, use Earthquake, now!" Coovers shouted.
"Don't let it get a chance! Beat it to a pulp!" Venarge yelled.
Krookodile lifted its foot to use Earthquake, but Rhyperior rammed it with its horn spinning like a drill. Krookodile slid back, keeping its footing, but it was soon punched in the face with Toxtricity using Fire Punch with both fists. Toxtricity punched Krookodile repeatedly while Rhyperior used Rock Blast. Krookodile was battered and bruised, and its eyes grew heavy, but it was not done yet. With Coovers' command in mind, Krookodile lifted its foot again, nearly losing its balance, and stomped on the ground with all its might. The ground shook, and the shockwaves hit Toxtricity and Rhyperior, knocking both of them out. Krookodile turned its head to Coovers and gave him a proud smirk before plummeting to the ground on its front.
Meanwhile, Marowak continued to avoid white beams and bolts of electricity, its opponent not giving it a moment to breathe. It jumped and spun so fast that it didn't realize it was moving close to the hole Corviknight created when thrusting Braviary into the ground. Marowak flipped to avoid another Discharge attack, only for one foot to land on solid ground while the other went into the hole. It fell in, dropping its bone, leaving Klinklang open to hit it with Flash Cannon successfully.
"Klinklang, take it out with Assurance!" Coovers shouted.
Marowak had a moment to get up and look for its bone before Klinklang smacked it in the face with its spiky rim. The Alolan Bone Keeper Pokémon got down on all fours, its part Ghost type body taking severe damage from the Dark type move. Klinklang struck Marowak with its rim again, knocking Marowak off its feet. Marowak whimpered until it noticed its bone was lying two feet away from its left. It crawled to its bone and picked it up just as Klinklang levitated toward it for another attack. Marowak threw its bone, and it hit Klinklang at the center of its largest gear. Klinklang floated back in a daze, leaving it open for Marowak to hit it with its bone a second time. Finally, Marowak tapped its bone on its head, setting it on fire before it spun around rapidly and cloaked itself in light green flames. It rolled toward its incapacitated opponent and rammed Klinklang. The Gear Pokémon stayed in the air for a moment before its gears stopped turning and it hit the ground with a thud, motionless.
Chandelure and Alakazam stopped fighting to see Klinklang unconscious before Coovers returned it to its Pokéball. The Psi Pokémon smirked as Marowak stood by its side, realizing it had Chandelure outnumbered. Chandelure looked between its two opponents with a twinge of fear for a moment before it shook it off and put on a brave face. The three Pokémon stayed still for a moment before Alakazam's eyes glowed blue and Chandelure was caught in its psychic hold. Alakazam prepared to thrust Chandelure into the ground, but Chandelure was held in the air in the right position to fire Shadow Ball at its captor. The Shadow Ball hit Alakazam in the face, freeing Chandelure. Marowak threw its bone at Chandelure, but the Luring Pokémon fired another Shadow Ball that collided with Marowak's bone, sending it flying in the opposite direction. As Marowak ran to get its bone, Alakazam crossed its spoons to release another Psybeam. But before Alakazam could fire, purple wisps of energy appeared around Chandelure and purple energy appeared around Alakazam, hurting it. Alakazam let out a painful cry as its health deteriorated until the purple energy exploded into a cloud of smoke, knocking it out.
Chandelure breathed heavily, fatigued after using so much of its energy to take out Alakazam. Its moment of respite was cut short, however, when Marowak jumped out from the smoke with a purple flame gathered around one end of its bone. Marowak beat Chandelure on top of its head with its bone, creating a burst of purple and blue flames surrounding Chandelure's body. The force sent Chandelure falling to the ground, lying with its eyes shut to fight the pain. It lifted its head in an attempt to begin levitating again, but Marowak bashed it in its round head until it stayed on the ground, limp.
Venarge grinned as Coovers returned his second to last Pokémon. Never mind how hurt Marowak was after getting hit by Klinkling using Discharge and Assurance. His enemy was down to only one Pokémon, Samurott, and it was focused on its duel with Obstagoon. As far as Venarge was concerned, that meant victory was assured.
"Marowak, use Shadow Bone!" Venarge shouted.
"Samurott, quick, move back and counter with Aqua Tail!" Coovers shouted.
Samurott gazed away from Obstagoon, finally aware of what was happening beyond their fight. It pushed Obstagoon away with the flat end of its seamitars, and its tail became surrounded in swirling water just as Marowak made a tall jump toward it, holding its bone with both hands. Samurott spun around and hit Marowak with its tail surrounded in water, sending it flying before landing a couple of feet away from Venarge. Samurott unleashed a massive stream of water from its mouth without waiting for a command from Coovers and that last Water type attack finished off Marowak before it could try to get back up.
Venarge's eyes looked back at Coovers, growing irate once more as Obstagoon snarled venomously at Samurott. Coovers and Samurott stared back with serious looks. People and Pokémon continued to battle all around them, yet still, Coovers, Venarge, and their partners focused on their battle as though it was the only one that mattered. To Venarge, his only hope was to win and then use Obstagoon to take Coovers hostage, forcing Timothy, Serena, and the citizens to back off. To Coovers, taking out Venarge's last Pokémon was the best way to force Venarge to lower the drawbridge. Even if his friends could finish the battle for him if he lost, it would mean more time spent trying to get into the stadium while Gwen and Sonia could be on their way with Zacian and Zamazenta. Either way, with only one Pokémon left on both sides, they could focus on just one fight, and they would fight with their partners until the very end.
"Obstagoon, Night Slash!"
"Samurott, Hydro Pump!"
Obstagoon charged at Samurott with its claws glowing white, but with another massive stream of water coming from its mouth, Samurott forced it back.
"Now, use Hydro Pump once more!" Coovers shouted.
"Dodge and use Headbutt!" Venarge shouted.
Samurott unleashed another stream of water, but Obstagoon ducked and ran toward its opponent before ramming it in the chest with its head.
"Now, use Night Slash!" Venarge shouted.
"Dodge and use Aqua Tail followed by Razor Shell!" Coovers shouted.
Samurott lowered its head, avoiding Obstagoon's claws as it spun around and smacked Obstagoon with its tail covered in water. Two seamitars came from the sheaths on Samurott's arms again, and it slashed Obstagoon's face from corner to corner. The Blocking Pokémon stepped back, howling as it covered its face with its arms. Then, it slowly moved its arms back, growling with its razor-sharp fangs clenched and two pink slashes on its face looking like an "X." At that moment, Venarge and Obstagoon became in the same state of mind. Their blood boiled for pure vengeance, determined to win the fight by whatever means necessary.
"Obstagoon, use Headbutt! Mega Punch! Night Slash! Brick Break! I don't care! Just take down that stupid Samurott!" Venarge screamed with his voice cracking.
"Samurott, use Razor Shell!" Coovers shouted.
Samurott swung its light blue swords at Obstagoon, but Obstagoon jumped back to avoid them before ramming Samurott with its head again. The attack was immediately followed by Obstagoon cutting Samurott's face with its claws with a bloodthirsty roar. Obstagoon spun, and karate chopped the side of Samurott's neck and began punching its chest with black orbs surrounding its fists. With every attack, Obstagoon growled with its mouth wide open and its tongue sticking out like a rabid animal. Samurott could not react to the pain as its opponent damaged it relentlessly. Finally, Obstagoon finished with a diagonal upward swipe on Samurott's cheek, hitting it with such a force that the formidable Pokemon toppled to its side.
"Samurott!" Coovers screamed.
Venarge sighed before his sinister grin returned. Obstagoon looked down at his toppled opponent with a toothy grin. The maroon-haired man let out a triumphant cackle as he shook his fist into the air while his partner howled with pride. Coovers stood devastated as his partner lay on its side motionless, feeling like a failure.
But as Venarge and Obstagoon celebrated, Samurott's nose twitched, and it let out a painful groan as it began to move again. Coovers' eyes widened with hope as Samurott put its front feet on the ground and pushed itself into a half-standing stance. Venarge and Obstagoon laughed at Samurott's efforts.
"Don't you think your Samurott's dragging this battle long enough Coovers?" Venarge asked. "Surely you can't seriously believe you have a smidge of a chance to win with your Pokémon in such a feeble state."
Coovers watched Samurott's legs shake as it struggled to stay standing. It wobbled before it spread its legs further apart to gain better footing, and its body became surrounded in an orange aura. Samurott turned its head to Coovers and gave it a weak smirk and a nod. Realizing his partner was waiting for him to say the word, Coovers smiled and nodded back before turning his eyes to Venarge.
"You know, Venarge? This might be cliché, but I've already won," he said. "Samurott, Revenge!"
Venarge's face fell as Samurott lifted its head and let out a roar. A burst of orange energy came out of its body and hit Obstagoon, sending it flying. Obstagoon flailed its arms in the air and howled as it flew up. It shut its eyes and closed its fists, trying to ignore the pain, but in the back of its mind, it knew it was finished the moment Samurott unleashed its counterattack. It flailed its arms until it was in midair, and its consciousness slipped away. Its trainer grew pale as he watched Obstagoon plummet to the ground with a crash, creating a hole in the cement.
Coovers and Venarge watched Obstagoon lie motionless with swirly eyes in silence. Some of the citizens and the chairman's people noticed what happened as they battled, and the citizens cheered while the agents and League Staff became severely dispirited. Timothy and Serena look to see the commotion while their Pokémon fought, and they cheered for their victorious friend. Coovers turned to Timothy and Serena and gave them a toothy grin and a thumbs up before turning back to Venarge.
"Like I told you, Venarge, I don't feel strongly about my Pokémon always having flat-out attacks," Coovers said.
"No..." Venarge muttered before looking up at Coovers in rage. "No! No! No! No! This isn't fair! I've dedicated my life to training my Pokémon! I should be taking on opponents like Leon, Ezria, and Durbin, not losing at the last second to someone who doesn't train their Pokemon every day like me!"
"Constant training means nothing if you don't have the focused mind and strategic wit to use your Pokémon to their very best Venarge," Coovers said. "Besides, if I'm so below the likes of Timothy, Leon, and Ezria, then I think you have a ways to go. Not that you'll have much time to improve back in jail."
As though on cue, police sirens were heard from a distance. Coovers looked back to find several police cars parking to create a blockade at the intersection. Looker came out of the police car parked at the center of the intersection, followed by multiple police officers armed with clubs and their Pokémon partners. Hammerlocke's Officer Jenny came out of her car with her trusty Boltund and stood in front of the police force.
"Attention, this is Hammerlocke Police!" she announced through her megaphone. "Everyone cease battling. Affiliates of Chairman Rose and their Pokémon are to come in quietly!"
As though on cue, the fighting ended under the officer's command. The citizens and their Pokémon cheered for the police while the morale of Chairman Rose's minions was extinguished. Agent Porter, who had been leading staff members that had conscious Pokémon, quivered and ran over to Venarge.
"Venarge, tell them to raise the bridge! We have to get back inside!" he pleaded.
Venarge took out his Rotom Phone to order Rotom to call the staff inside the stadium. However, just as he opened his mouth, he paused and looked between his enemies, Obstagoon, and Eternatus. Venarge tightened his grip on his phone, trying to bring himself to take the chance for the sake of his pride, but ultimately he shut his eyes and looked away from Oleana's subordinate.
"No," he said. "Uncle Rose is counting on me to keep the enemy out of the stadium. If we must surrender to give him time to complete his dream, then so be it."
Agent Porter watched in disbelief as Venarge returned Obstagoon to its Pokéball with his head hung low. Before the agent realized it, a couple of police officers walked over and cuffed him and Venarge. Coovers and Samurott watched their opponent be taken away, but then Samurott winced and went down on one knee. Coovers gave his partner a sad smile as he took out its Pokéball.
"You were tremendous, Samurott. Get a good rest," he said.
"Sam," Samurott replied with a short nod.
The Formidable Pokémon turned into pink energy and was sucked into its Pokéball. Coovers put the Pokéball back in his pocket just as Timothy and Serena had run over to him with their Pokémon followed behind. The former smirked at his best friend before patting him on the back.
"Great job Coovers. Must feel good to get some payback from Stow-on-Side," Timothy said.
"Yeah, well, I learned from the best Timbo," Coovers said.
"You were fantastic Coovers," Serena chirped before her face looked around in confusion. "But, where is Goh?"
Coovers frowned and said, "You know, I don't think I've seen him since the battle started. You don't think he'd run away. Do you?"
"No way. Goh may not have a lot of experience in Pokémon battling, but when it comes to not giving up he's as stubborn as Ash," Serena said.
Timothy rubbed his chin in thought and said, "The drawbridge was down at one point with some of the chairman's people getting inside. He might have gotten in then."
"If that's the case, we only succeeded in getting one of us inside and Sonia and Gwen could be here any minute," Serena said.
"Not to mention there's no telling how much closer Eternatus is to being fully revived," Coovers added.
"And I presume that's exactly what's happening above that tower, Officer Coovers?" Looker asked, walking over to Timothy, Coovers, and Serena.
"Sir, yes, sir," Coovers replied, immediately standing straight and saluting at the sight of his superior.
"Then can you explain why my Rotom Phone went off, revealing that you've given your footage to the media to cause civilians to attack without my consent?" Looker asked.
"Uh, well, I wasn't sure I was going to reach you given that Timothy told me you were occupied at Wyndon, sir," Coovers said. "And we hoped to force our way in while fighting Venarge and the chairman's security, but it looks like our friend, Goh, might have gotten in before they raised the drawbridge again."
"So, no one else is inside to try to stop Chairman Rose?" Looker asked.
"Ash flew in with Leon, Galar's Champion, before we attacked. We don't know what's happened to them," Timothy said.
Looker hummed in acknowledgment before he realized something and asked, "Hold on, weren't you with your companion, Gwen, and Professor Magnolia's granddaughter solving some mystery Coovers?"
Coovers froze in place, and Timothy bit hip lip, realizing their mistake.
"Uh, well, the chairman's people attacked us and so Goh and I fended them off while Sonia and Gwen left to get what we need to subdue Eternatus," he said.
"And that is?" Looker asked.
"Two Pokémon named Zacian and Zamazenta that apparently have taken down Eternatus before," Coovers said. "And now with the bridge still up, Gwen and Sonia can't get in even if they found the Pokémon."
Looker hummed again, and scratched his chin in thought.
"This does put us in a troubling position," Looker said. "Are there no other ways to defeat Eternatus without these specific Pokemon?"
"Well, I still have the Master Ball, but I was hoping we could stop Eternatus without using it," Timothy said.
"I think we are past being able to choose how we can save an entire region, Timothy," Looker said. "I say we force our way inside and you use that Pokéball to contain Eternatus while we capture the chairman."
Timothy frowned before he sighed and nodded, accepting that the risk was more important than his promise to Gwen. He turned to the stadium and rubbed his chin as he stared at the drawbridge.
"If that's the case, maybe we can pull the drawbridge down with Shockwave and Gengar using Psychic?" He suggested.
Serena tilted her head and asked, "Is that possible?"
"At this point, I'm willing to try anything after all of our efforts," Coovers said.
Timothy and Serena looked at each other and nodded. They walked over to the edge with their Pokémon, Coovers, and Looker following behind.
"Shockwave, use Psychic!" Timothy shouted.
"Gengar, use Psychic too!" Serena shouted.
The Pokémon's eyes glowed and the drawbridge became surrounded by a blue outline and purple aura. Shockwave and Gengar clenched their teeth pulling with all their might. The drawbridge creaked and slowly moved down far enough for a narrow opening in the top doorway. Timothy, Coovers, Serena, Looker, and the Pokémon grew hopeful for a moment until the drawbridge eventually moved back. Shockwave and Gengar began to sweat. Timothy and Odyssey walked over to hold Shockwave's hands and pat its back for support but the bridge moved back until it was inches away from being completely closed.
"Sinistea, Psychic!"
Everyone turned left to see Gunther standing beside them with his Milcery and Sinistea. Sinistea's eyes glowed blue, making the outline around the bridge brighter. Gunther turned to the group and gave a nod before turning his head to the crowd.
"Everyone with a Pokémon that knows Confusion or Psychic, help us out!" Gunther called out.
A dozen citizens ran over to the group with their Pokémon and their partners' eyes began glowing. The blue outline around the bridge was so bright it shined over the purple aura coming from Gengar. The drawbridge began coming down again, slowly but surely. As the entryway came into view, other civilian Pokémon joined in. Flying Pokémon flew over the bridge and tried to push it down. Some Grass type Pokémon pulled using Vine Whip. Everyone encouraged their Pokémon to keep going as the drawbridge went further down.
When the bridge was half down, however, the Pokémon began to fatigue and the bridge began going back up again. Timothy growled in annoyance until he got an idea.
"Serena, we need to destroy the chains holding the bridge," he said. "I'll go right, and you go left just like with the Steelix."
"Right," Serena said.
The two trainers went to opposite sides of the field with their Pokémon, where they had a clear shot of the chains holding the bridge. Timothy and Serena nodded to each other before they made their commands.
"Electchu, Thunder! Poliwrath, Hydro Pump! Odyssey, Aura Sphere!"
"Delphox, Flamethrower! Pancham, Dark Pulse! Sylveon, Swift! Poliwhirl, Ice Beam!"
The Pokémon unleashed their respective attacks, forming into two massive beams that destroyed the chains upon impact. The drawbridge went down with a loud bang, revealing several League Staff members standing on the other side. One was standing in the wall with the controls to the drawbridge. All of them stood still with their faces pale in disbelief as the citizens and their Pokémon cheered. Looker grinned and let out a low chuckle before pointing at the staff.
"Get them!" He shouted.
All the police officers that weren't occupied arresting Venarge and his men charged inside with their Pokémon. The staff ran as fast as their legs could carry them, but they knew there was no place in Hammerlocke Stadium where they could escape with the entrance the only way they could go in or out. Timothy, Coovers, Serena, Looker, Electchu, Poliwrath, Odyssey, Shockwave, Blitzwing, Delphox, Pancham, Sylveon, Poliwhirl, Absol and Gengar smiled as they watched the police chase after the chairman's people.
"Well, now that's settled, let's put an end to this," Looker said. "Where is the Energy Plant?"
"Straight ahead. There's a large metal elevator door on the right before entering the battlefield. You'll need a handprint to get in," Timothy answered.
"That won't be a problem. I'll bet Mr. Markenel or some of his associates can give me access so I can find more of Chairman Rose's people if not the chairman himself," Looker said, smirking before his face turned serious. "But that won't mean anything if we don't stop Eternatus. Timothy, Coovers, Serena, get up that tower and capture that Pokémon right now."
"Yes, sir," Coovers said with a salute.
Timothy nodded and took a step before he realized he forgot something. He turned to Gunther, who watched the police storm the stadium until he noticed Timothy looking at him. The two men silently looked at each other for a moment before Timothy offered his hand.
"Thank you," he said.
Gunther stared at Timothy's hand and sighed before he shook it. He forced a smile on his face, but Timothy could see he was still heartbroken.
"Are you going to be alright?" Timothy asked.
"I'll...get by. We all will," Gunther said before giving a pleading look. "Please, stop her. Stop her for all of us."
Timothy nodded with a sad smile.
"You have my word," he said.
Gunther gave a small but sincere smile and nodded back as a sign of trust. He let go of Timothy's hand, and the man in the "H.A.K." shirt smirked before turning to his friends.
"Alright everyone, let's go save the day!" He shouted.
"Right!" Coovers and Serena simultaneously.
"Raichu," Electchu said.
"Poliwrath," Poliwrath bellowed.
"Lucar," Odyssey said.
"Gardevoir," Shockwave said.
"Braiv!" Blitzwing cawed.
"Delphox," Delphox said.
"Pancham, Pan," Pancham said.
"Sylveon," Sylveon said.
"Poliwhirl," Poliwhirl said.
"Absol!" Absol roared.
"Gengar," Gengar cackled.
Timothy, Coovers, Serena, and the Pokémon raced inside. As they went in, however, Timothy looked back to see Gunther and the other civilians watching Timothy and his friends. He could see in their eyes that they were putting their faith in him and his friends to save their lives. Timothy winced in unease, feeling as though he had ironically been put on a pedestal as the hero of Galar. He put the matter in the back of his head, knowing the fight was far from over. The police stormed the stadium, but Timothy knew their Pokémon would be no match for Ezria's party. There was also no telling where Ash, Leon, and Goh were and if they were alright. Above all, Timothy needed to find a way to Eternatus so he could seal it with the Master Ball. He still remembered his promise to Gwen, but he would rather go back on a promise to her this time for what was necessary.
