6. Wrong Sarah
Or so I thought. Three days after their departure, I still haven't been able to get Bucky out of my mind. Every night, it takes me hours to fall asleep, replaying the same questions and images over and over again. In addition to the seducer of recent days, there's the broken man who hides his sensitivity, whom I have known since his arrival on the island.
I miss him and worry about him. Right, but about Sam too. Why should this be any different?
I remember him surrounded by these women and wonder what it would be like to be one of them. There's something I can't explain to myself, something that disturbs me more than I would like.
One evening, when I come to her house for dinner and help her with the children, Sarah clearly notices it. "You've been acting weird, since the other night."
"I'm just a little tired."
"You can fool whoever you want, but not me. I didn't miss the way you looked at Bucky and his fan club before he left."
"To be honest, I don't really understand what's happening to me. He didn't have that effect on me before."
"Before you offered him one-on-one coaching to get him flirting again?" She suggests with a grin.
"If you say so." I shrug.
"You spent a lot of time together, that must have brought you closer."
"I think seeing him with these women showed me another side of his personality. Less cold, softer, more caring... and yet always respectful. I thought it was just a purely physical attraction, a passing crush that would quickly fade away... But the guy has invaded my thoughts, and not just with the moments we've spent together recently."
"Watch out, you might fall in love."
"Fortunately, we're not there yet. That would be pretty annoying. He made it clear to me that we were friends before he left. And now that he can have all the beautiful girls he wants, there's no way he's going to see me any other way and notice me among them." I point out before the sound of something falling above us makes me look up at the ceiling.
"What was that?" Sarah asks, frowning.
"Sounds like it came from the boys' room."
"Boys, I'm warning you." She raises her voice. "If you don't sleep-"
This time, we hear the sound of glass breaking.
"Can you hand me the broom that's in the cupboard?" She sighs.
"Hold on, I'll help you." I follow her upstairs as she warns her sons they'll have to clean up what they've broken.
We both freeze as we enter their bedroom. Aj and Cass are gagged and tied in the middle of the room. We rush towards them, but two men catch us before we can reach them.
"Which one is Sarah?" One asks the other.
"Who cares! We take them both and get rid of the other one later."
We look at each other in horror. No matter how hard we try to fight, they're stronger than us, and more importantly, they're armed. To make us cooperate more quickly, they even threaten the children.
They put the four of us in a van where we huddle together with no idea of what to expect or where they're taking us. It seems obvious that I'm just collateral damage and that they intend to get rid of me as soon as they figure out which one of us is Sarah. I wonder what they want from her. She's not the type to get into trouble.
Aj and Cass are terrified. We try to comfort them despite the fact that we're just as panicked as they are. After the van, we board a plane, then a new vehicle takes us to a large, castle-like building. We don't get to see much of the outside, as we're rudely escorted into a room with closed shutters.
I feel exhausted, but all my senses are on alert trying to figure out the situation, which keeps me awake.
A man wearing a fancy suit enters the room and gives us a contemptuous look before speaking to his henchmen in a strong accent I can't identify. "Why are they four?"
"We've picked up everyone in the house and none of them told us who wasn't Sarah."
"Well, we'll just have to nicely ask them again." He says before turning to us with a toothy grin. "Sweethearts, let me explain the situation. For the smooth running of my business, I need the Wilson family. Sarah and her sons. But if you can't decide to tell me which one of you is the extra, I can always settle for just one child."
He pulls out a gun and points it at Cass, who sobs as he cowers against his mother.
"It's me." I reveal with a trembling voice. "I'm not Sarah, let them live."
"Perfect. You see, it wasn't that difficult." He shifts his gun to aim at me.
I clench my teeth. So this is the end? My torturer revels in my expression, savoring the moment as he slowly slides his finger over the trigger.
Suddenly, the door opens and a woman with a tray full of glasses appears in the doorway. "Oops. I'm sorry, wrong r-"
Before she can even close the door, he turns and shoots her. Our screams of horror join to the clatter of shattering glasses as a lifeless body falls to the floor. Sarah quickly hides her children's eyes. The sight of blood and our reaction makes the armed men smile even wider.
"I hate being interrupted." The murderer sighs. "Get rid of that and go get a new uniform. Looks like it's your lucky day, sweetheart. A waitress position just opened up. Make the most of this reprieve. If you don't behave, the same fate awaits them. Who would you rather I kill first? Him or him?" He smirks while alternating between Aj and Cass.
"I'll do whatever you say. Please don't hurt them."
"Good, I prefer that."
I change clothes without being given any privacy and pick up the tray handed to me. One of the henchmen leads me to a large reception room, filled with elegantly dressed people who seem completely unaware of what's going on behind these luxuriously upholstered walls. I walk between them, trying to contain my trembling. The slightest misstep is not allowed. I'm petrified at the thought that he only gave me a cruel delay before he eventually kills me.
My eyes suddenly meet a familiar gaze and my fingers tighten on the tray.
