"What do you know about that?" Fernkit narrowed her eyes.
"Fernkit, don't ask me what I know." Bluenose meowed. "Ask me to help you."

"You can help me?" Fernkit was getting curious.
"I can give you advice," He knew what to say to get the kit to listen. "and, I can teach you how to fight."

Fernkit knew that she wanted to say yes, but she needed to be carful. "Why would you want to teach me anything?" She scoffed. "I'm a kittypet, remember?"

"No one knows that for sure." The grey tom's bright green eyes flashed. "They found you, right?"
"Yes..."
"But they found you by the river, not in a twoleg place."

"That's true..." She concluded. "But what about the dead kittypet they found with me?"
"Pff, who knows?" He declared. "It could've been a kittypet from farther upstream."

"But then what would I be if I'm not a kittypet? A loner?"
Bluenose didn't seem to know what to say to that.
"A kittypet or a loner, neither are Warriors." Fernkit hissed.

"But they can become Warriors."
"Not if their clanmates don't accept them."
"But I can teach you how to make them accept you."
Fernkit knew she wanted whatever he was going to offer. "Okay, teach me."

"I was hoping you'd say that." He lashed his dark grey tail. "Follow me. We're going to the other side of camp to train. It's more peaceful."

"Starkit, from this day forward until you receive your Warrior name, you will be known as Starpaw."

Starpaw shivered as the Moonclan leader, Lightstar, finished.
Wait a moment. Warrior name?
"Your mentor will be Seedclaw."
What? She gasped silently. I was supposed to be a medicine cat!

She'd been training in the medicine cat's den with the two medicine cats, Hazelfur and Blacknose, for the last moon and a half, hoping to become their medicine cat apprentice. But alas, Lightstar obviously had other intentions.

"I know you were hoping to become a medicine cat," The leader continued. "But we need you as a warrior."

Starpaw dipped her head in understanding, but secretly she was still disappointed.
She tried not to show it as she padded over to touch Seedclaw's nose.
But I wanted to be a medicine cat!
