Chapter Twenty-One
Dorian walked alongside me as if we were two friends taking a stroll and not a prisoner being forced to listen to her captor's monologue.
"I wasn't always his rich." He began, "Or, I'm sure as you'd like to call me, bitter. In fact, once, I was just like you. Homeless, lost, alone, left to fend and provide for myself in the world."
"I'm not homeless and lost. And I'm definitely not alone." I hissed.
Dorian, however, simply ignored me and continued. "Of course there are people you meet along the way. People, who leave a lasting impact on you. It's a nice feeling while it lasts." His once bright eyes grow darker suddenly and he looks as if he's remembering something.
"That's valuable street lesson number one, Circe. In the end, everyone goes away." He turned back to look at me, "Even the ones who promised to stay."
"Did you just..-Did you just rhyme?" I demanded with a scrunched up face. I was literally being escorted around by possibly one of the deadliest men of my generation and what does he do in his monologue? Make it sound like a Dr. Seuss book!
Dorian smirked in return. "Anyway. I was given mercy in my youth. A man took me under his wing when he found me one night. He was wealthy and was currently dedicating his resources towards destroying our kind. It was an opportunity handed to me by destiny herself, Circe. And I was not going to turn it down. So I lied. I told him I was a Normal. And of course, if you don't do anything to draw attention to yourself," He gave me a pointed look, "Then people won't question what species you are. I was slighted in my youth. Just like you. But when push comes to shove, the little men always end out on top."
"But you're not on top! In fact, you're far from it!" I stated angrily.
"Oh, am I now?" Dorian chuckled.
"You literally kill us! You say you're doing this for us, but you're killing our kind! Its mass genocide and you're in a powerful position with sway over the people and what do you do? You push them in the wrong direction! You have so much power, yet you still abuse it!" I scowled.
Dorian raised a brow, considering my words. "You know, you're a lot dumber than you look."
"What?"
"Listen, Circe, I don't know who taught you politics, but they sucked. The people are not just some mindless drones ready to be indoctrinated. No, instead they are the ones indoctrinating us! We run under a little something called limited government. The people tell us what to do, not the other way around. No matter what we try and say, there's always going to be that small faction of people who hold onto the old ways and they'll be waiting to spread their ideas to the masses so it'll all get started all over again. You either join the program or get trampled by it." Dorian said, his humor melting away a bit to reveal a colder side of him.
"But how do you know?" I demanded, glaring at him fiercely. "How do you know people won't change?"
"Because they haven't changed for centuries. They'll always be corrupt and greedy, and manipulative!"
"Says who!"
"Says everyone!"
"Everyone like who?!"
Dorian's eyes began to glow and I swear I could see some lights flicker. "SAYS LILITH! THE PEOPLE WHO KILLED HER CAN TESTIFY TO THAT! SO CAN THE ONES WHO PROABABLY KILLED INNOCENT CHILDREN'S BIRTH PARENTS TOO! JUST LIKE THEY KILLED MINE!"
I shrunk back a bit. I saw a glimmer of Dorian's uncontrolled rage in Hailey's memory, but this was ten times worse. Seeing his eyes blazing, looking at his hands balled up into tight fist, seeing his long hair slightly start to float off if his shoulders as his powers began to flare up, it reminded me that I wasn't facing some mortal. This man was still powerful.
And he could still kill me.
I gulped and in a desperate attempt to change the subject managed to squeak out, "Who's Lilith?"
Dorian blinked and leaned away from me. His eyes darkened once again before he shook his head. "No one. No one important." He ran a hand through his hair and smiled a bit, "It's time for the surprise I was telling Hira to get ready." His playful nature seemed to rise up once more as he composed himself.
"Come along, now. He's no doubt missing you."
