Chapter 9

It was getting late when I decided to go back to my den. The cool night breeze flowing through my fur felt wonderful, but I knew I needed to get some sleep.

I settle down in my nest, and rest my head on my paws. Instantly, my mind swirls, and I am plunged into a dream.

~~~~~
The lush green grass of the mountains during Greenleaf waves about my paws as a soft breeze flows. The air is warm, about as warm as it gets during Greenleaf. I wonder why when I dream I'm in our territory, it is typically during Greenleaf.
All of a sudden, the warmth of the moment vanishes, and darkness overwhelms me. Wailing breaks out as the scene plays out in front of me.
The sky turns deep red and black as the wailing becomes louder. I twirl around, trying to find the cat that is wailing.
"Where are you?!" I yowl into the wind that is picking up. "I want to help you! Where are you!!!!!! Hello?!!!!"
My yowls are met with louder wails. The wind picks up by a lot, and actually starts to carry me away. I flap my wings for balance, and to not allow the wind to carry me away, but my struggles are useless. There is no way for me to regain balance, and I am carried higher and higher up into the sky, and away from where I was originally standing.
"HELP!" I screech.
No one comes to my aid. Not the powerful Firestar, nor any other starlit, or tangible cat. I am swept into darkness, and darkness clouds my vision.
"When darkness approaches, light must break free, and defeat darkness, or darkness will swallow light forever...."
Forever. Such a misleading word. I believed that I would forever have a good life. I believed that I would forever  have a strong connection with my sister. I believed that I would forever have a good life as a Clan cat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I wake up, yowling in terror.

"Darkness..." I pant.

Light filters in from the front of my cave. I sigh in relief as I take in my surroundings. No wailing cats. No utter darkness. No blood red skies.

Walking out of my cave, while attempting to calm down, I see that I woke up very late. Sunlight glares off of the fresh white snow. The blizzard had stopped, and now the sun shone. Tempestclaw stood below, organizing the last of the patrols.

I bound down to the elders' den, to check on them.

"Hey, there Silverstar!" Rowenpelt meows.

"Hi, just checking to see if the catmint has helped Squirrelheart and Grayfoot."

"It definitely has," Rowenpelt replies. "I actually managed to get some sleep!"

I purr. "That's good."

Squirrelheart adds in, "I feel much better now. I think I could go back to warrior duties!"

Grassfur snorts. "That will happen when hedgehogs fly!"

I chuckle. That was like the old Squirrelheart and Grassfur. The littermates were the last of their litter, and held onto each other dearly, as so they not (hopefully not yet) lose one of them.

"Well, I see everything has gone back to normal, so I'll leave you guys in peace," I start walking out of the den.

Grayfoot's voice stops me. "Wait! Can I talk to you in private for a moment?"

"Sure."

Grayfoot and I walk to the edge of camp, in a spot that is not occupied.

Grayfoot paws at the ground nervously. "I think something is wrong. I see Hollyspeck sneek out of camp many times at night, and I sometimes wonder what her real reasons were for joining WingClan."

"I have been asking myself that question for a while now," I admit. "That, and I've been questioning whether it was a good or bad idea that I let her join our Clan."

Grayfoot's ears twitch. "I think she's watching us..."

Though Grayfoot was growing elderly, I knew best that her ears still picked up even the tiny heartbeat of a mouse from a few tail lengths away.

"I'll keep a good eye on her," I whisper, and get up.

If Hollyspeck was a traitor, she would pay for it.

Grayfoot gets up with assistance from me, and then lumbers back to her den. I eye around for Hollyspeck, but don't see her anywhere. I cautiously walk over to the nursery, watching for any signs of Hollyspeck, and if she was indeed spying on Grayfoot and I.

When I ge to the nursery, Darrpledwillow, Boulderblaze, Mossshine, and Featherlight's kits are fast asleep. I see that the catmint has helped, so I retreat to outside the den.

All of a sudden, I hear a screech coming from the direction of the peak of the mountain. I whip around, and see a huge chunk of snow coming down from the mountain, in an avalanche.

"EVERYONE, GET UP, AND OUT OF THE CAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I screech.

Even before I say anything, most cats are already out of their nests, and rushing out of camp. I rush around to every den, and make sure everyone is out.

"Please make your way out of camp, and please start making your way down the mountain! If we can make it down, and out of the line of fire, we will be OK!" I say with difficulty due to the loud rumbling of the snow. I see Boulderblaze struggling with the kits, and bound up to her. She nods in thanks as I take Stripekit. Mossshine helps with Applekit as Boulderblaze continues to carry Redkit. Cats burst through to entrance to our camp, making their way down the mountain in a flash. No one cares about the fortifications at the entrance, and rushes out. Surprisingly, not many cats freak out, but there are a few. The majority of the WingClan cats are somewhat calm as we run away from our certain doom.

Hearing the wall of snow growing louder, I open my wings, and burst up.

"There is no use in running!" I screech as I use my paws to hold Stripekit as I talk. "We need to fly above the avalanche!"

Cats burst up into the air quickly. We start flapping harder as we gain altitude, and almost clear the snow, but suddenly, the avalanche is upon us, and I am sucked down by the snow. The poor little Stripekit screeches in my paws as I fall to the ground. I see some other cats being sucked down, and take Stripekit by my jaws again. I struggle, but it is no use. The snow's force is dragging me further down.

I wrap my wings in around my head, and around Stripekit as we are pulled into the deep snow. Oh StarClan! Save us! After I wrap my wings around Stripekit and around my head, the world goes black as tons of snow pile over us.
