Chapter 4
The four guardians and I piled out of Bunny's tunnel to be greeted with a very unexpected surprise. The streets of Honeyglade were covered with snow, and not the smooth and soft bed of snow that I leave on the ground.
No, there were ice and snow covering everything. It looked as if there was a snowstorm there, which could have been true due to recent events. It was not a pleasant sight to hold, not even for me.
"What is this? Jack?" North asked me. I just shrugged my shoulders. It's not even supposed to snow here yet. It's the middle of April for crying out loud.
I was about to voice this thought when I saw two girls around the age of 13 walking a little ways away from us. I jogged over to them to listen to what they were saying. They were slipping and sliding on the sidewalk, and they were frowning.
"Sally! Watch out!" One of the girls said alarmed. The other girl lost her footing and crashed into the side of a lamppost. "Stupid ice!"
"Are you o-woah," she had rested her hand on the window of a shop but slid on it since it was covered in frost. Now, she was in a pile on the ground. "Stupid frost!"
"Abby, you're ok?" Sally asked, still on the ground.
"Yeah," Abby sighed. "Where did all this snow come from? Isn't it supposed to be spring?"
"I know right." She tried to get up, failing in the process. "Ugh! I hate winter!" She screamed out in frustration.
I reeled back as she said that, well, screamed that.
"Haha. I like her," Bunny said next to me. I didn't even notice him come up. I was about to make a snappy remark when I was interrupted by a voice.
"Hey, you're the Easter Bunny," Sally said, pointing at Bunny. "And you're Santa Claus, Sandman, and the Tooth Fairy," continued Abby.
I was a little hurt that they didn't know who I was. I mean, I was only made a guardian a year ago, but still.
"Don't forget Jack Frost here," added Tooth. That's why I liked her, she always included me in stuff.
"Jack Frost? Where?" Sally asked, turning her head in all directions. That's when I realized, she didn't see me. Huh.
"You have to believe in him," North encouraged. "Go on. You can do it."
The two girls closed their eyes, hopefully thinking of me. Ok, that came out wrong. When they opened them again they both gasped. "Hey there," I said, smirking.
Sally began to scratch the back of her head guiltily. "About what I said before..." she began but I cut her off.
"Don't sweat it," I reassured her. "Not everyone likes winter, or the cold."
She was about to reply but Abby beat her to it. "Wait a second. Why is it snowing now? It's not supposed to be winter, is it?"
"No. I, uh," I looked at the other guardians but they gave no help whatsoever. What a surprise. "That was a... bit of an accident. Here."
I concentrated hard on the snow, calling on the winds as I did so to take it away. Once I was sure they were coming I waved my hand quickly over the now disappearing snow, and I don't mean melting, no, I mean vanishing from sight, like it was never there.
This all took half a minute. It would have been faster if I had my staff but I didn't. My vision was a bit blurry since that was slightly harder than the times that I did have my staff. When it cleared up, I saw all the other guardians looking at me, shocked and jaws open.
"What?" I asked, a tiny bit annoyed.
"We just, didn't know you could do that, frostbite," Bunny answered. "Do magic without your staff. At least, we've never seen you do that before."
I thought before I answered, something I find I do more of nowadays. "I don't usually clear up the snow. It takes a lot of energy out of you."
As if to prove my point, a wave of pain washed over me, like pins were being stuck in my brain, and I staggered back. "Jack! Are you okay?!" one of the girls asked me. By that point I couldn't really tell who it was.
"Yeah, I just need a minute to recover."
"Ok, you are not allowed to use powers like that till you get staff," said North sternly.
"North, I-"
"No Jack," Tooth said, concerned. "I think we can all agree that you're more important."
I looked at the other two and they both nodded. I gave up trying to argue, I knew I would lose. "Ok, I won't do that again."
After saying goodbye to the two girls, we continued walking around the park to find any clues as to why the lights we're flickering. "Well, we know Pitch was here."
"And how do we know that?" I sighed. Ugh, Bunny with the questions.
"We know that because, no matter how big the storm, the ice, the snow, and the frost wouldn't be like that unless it came from my staff. It's just not possible. Wait." I thought for a second. Did I anger one of the wind spirits. Nah. I couldn't have. "No, it's just not possible."
"Just a little more hours then, ok? We need to make sure Pitch didn't stick around to play with the other kids," Tooth said. She was obviously worried, then again, everyone was.
We searched for another two hours which, by then, the sun was going down.
"There's nothing here guys," Tooth said. We were all very tired from the very busy day.
"💤" Sandy said, well, air quoted.
"Let's go back to the pole," North said, then to me, "we'll continue again tomorrow morning."
"Oh, are you leaving already? We haven't had our fun yet."
