Chapter 1/Trees and Stone
Two years later. Meta's POV.
The Yukon Alaska.
It began when a well dressed but lethal man walked into the dinner. I looked out from the kitchen to see him sit down with a straight back and buzz cut. He wore a black suit. No one in the country wears a suit. He ordered a ham on rye. Nothing exceptional about that. He sat with the snow capped mountains behind him in the glass. The Yukon didn't attract many tourists now, not many of anyone these days. Nothing much here but trees, stone and silence, I liked it like that.
He waited quietly surveying the junk decor as he did. Becky the waitress came up with his order.
"I want the other waitress," he said directly.
"I'm sorry hun I'm the only one on. Fact is, I'm the only waitress in a hundred miles." Becky said.
Becky was telling the truth. I had been a waitress but made to many mistakes with the orders. Becky was a nice woman with a daughter my age. She wanted to help me out so I had switched to being the cleaner.
"He said she might be working as a cleaner." The man said. At this, a couple of the locals lifted their eyes from their phones, then quickly looked down.
Becky looked at him "Who said?"
"Mr Rockwood himself. Sent me for her." He said. From the sink , My ears picked up at this.
Becky looked at him, he could have said 'the pope sent me.' And got a more believable response.
Becky was used to worse people than this. She stood fearlessly before him. Jake the short order looked out the serving hatch. While we had never spoken about it, She saw how nervous l looked at police or the occasional administrator came in. I wondered if she had guessed at my impairment. She was what I thought of as good folk. Quiet, but with a stony wall before what they felt was wrong.
"The cleaner doesn't see anyone." Becky said. "she just cleans hon."
At this the man looked down. He then pushed his plate and drink on to the floor. It crashed down making a terrible mess. The noise rattled around the dinner for a moment. Everyone looked over.
"I think someone should clean that up" the man said nodding. You could feel the hairs on your neck stand stiffly like a brush at that. He sat stiffly.
I grabbed the bucket and rushed out, Becky tried to stand in my way but I pushed by her.
"Its' all right," I said getting down on my hands and knees.
I didn't look at him and the man didn't move. Becky moved back into the kitchen to see why Jake the cook was so useless.
"He wants to see you." The Man said looking at a photo on his expensive phone.
I put the pieces in the bin and began to clean the mess from the tile floors.
"I don't know who you're talking ab,ut." I said looking down.
He reached down and grabbed my arm. He pulled me up to see his serious face.
"He told me not to hurt you. I don't always follow orders. He didn't mention not touching any others" He said holding my arm firmly. From his neck I could see the line of a chest holster. I wasn't sure how quickly I could put my cybernetics on line. I hand't booted my self up fully in two years. I had some escape plans but getting out of the room would be hard. Becky might get hurt. I didn't want anyone to know who I was. This was the closest thing to a home I had in a while.
"He told me to tell you. He has found the girl." The man said. "just wants to talk. Then you can come back. I take you there, then back. That's the job."
I looked down to think. Then threw the sponge in the bucket.
"I go there, then you bring me back right?" I said. I started to remove the uniform apron logo and all.
The man nodded "In one."
Becky came out. "Becky I'm going out, but he's bringing me back." I said to Becky's disapproval.
"I'm Tod" the man announced. "I do Mr Rockwood's personal security planning. The limousine is out the back."
