Chapter 4
⚔ The Right Way ⚔
Kallm couldn't believe it.
He had found his Lavender. In a day no less.
The shock of his discovery had him sitting on the ground in front of her. The woman who had taken his heart without even leaving her name. And Kallm couldn't find anything wrong with that.
He watched her eyes cloud up with tears, the water nearly tipping over the edge and Kallm nearly laughed. It seemed that whenever they met, she had been crying.
"What's wrong Lavender?" Kallm still didn't know her name, but he was perfectly happy calling her his Lavender. It was a story to tell his grandchildren.
Kallms eyes followed hers as she gazed down at the wrist she was cradling, the joint look red and stuck out in an odd shape. Kallm took a deep breath in and reached his hand forward to touch it. To his amazement Corin didn't flinch, simply looking up at him with her blue-green eyes, her innocence and pain written across her features.
Kallm stood up, bending down to brace her arm as he helped her up. She stumbled slightly and he wrapped one arm around her waist to steady her. The hand on her wrist began burning and he could only guess how much it was paining her. His own face mirrored hers as she winced whilst looking at him. He could tell she didn't necessarily remember his face, it was his voice that had her staring at him.
"Hey man, what," Rineo came out, holding a pizza bread, the loaf hanging form his lips as he noticed Kallm holding a blonde woman.
"Where's the hospital man?" Kallm called out, not taking his eyes off Corin. The drops of water that had previously decorated her eyes had begun to drop, leaving a trail of guilt in their wake. Kallm couldn't help using a finger to wipe the tears away. He hadn't mean to come out of the store that fast. He hadn't been looking where he was going.
Rineo glanced down at the discarded cheese bun and looked back up at the woman in Kallms arms. Silently, Rineo started walking towards the other end of the street, attempting to hail down a cab as Kallm continued to hold Corin.
Kallm nodded at Corin before letting her arm go slowly. Her mouth twisted as the pressure on her arm left but she waited for Kallm to take off his jacket and tie it around her, the sleeves going around her neck to produce a make-shift sling. Kallm didn't know how badly her wrist was hurt but he was sure it was at the least a sprain.
Rineo called out to let them know he had finally attracted a means of transport and opened the door, helping Kallm lead Corin in first, then settling himself in the front giving directions to the nearest hospital.
As they approached the hospital, Kallm continued to keep an arm around Corin, holding the wrist in place. Getting out of the cab first, Kallm extended an arm back and helped Corin out, all the while keeping an eye on her face. He had realised early on that she could not hide what she was feeling from her facial expressions, even when she didn't speak.
Walking inside, Kallm took her straight to the reception, waiting impatiently for the young receptionist to finish taking her personal call and smile smugly at them. Corin grimaced and Kallm had had enough. Leaning forward, he made eye contact before smiling back at her and pressing the disconnect button.
"Hey! You can't do that."
"Unless you want me to call someone else, you might want to have a listen to what I have to say."
Corin hadn't heard his smooth voice take on such a hardened stance before, granted she had only heard it a couple times before, and she didn't know why she had gotten goosebumps.
Seeing him being the person who had knocked her over had her stunned. She hadn't been given a good look at his face before, but she would recognise that voice anywhere. And the way it had called her Lavender. Just the name had given her chills. The shock had overtaken her and she had remained silent the whole way there, sitting in awe that he was really there. But what was he doing?
She had never really paid much attention to him during those times that they had met briefly, she had a few other things going on at those times to concentrate on a boy. But perhaps he could have saved her. Perhaps he could've stopped her from making the worst mistake of her life.
Tears pooled in her eyes again, though this time not from the pain. Her view of his sturdy back became blurry and she noticed his figure turn and look at her again. He said something else which made the receptionist nod furiously and call someone as he turned to her, pulling her gently into his chest.
Seeing him just brought back the hurt that she was trying to leave behind. Seeing him had also made her understand that no matter where she went, how far she ran, the past had a way of catching up with her. And there was no way of making it right.
"Mr. Lakin? Please follow me." A nurse came down holding a clipboard and gestured to the pair that they should follow her and began down the maze that is called hospital halls. The constant beeping and the too clean smell had Corin cowering more into Kallm's embrace. She had never liked hospitals.
"If you'd take a seat here Mr Lakin, I'll take Mrs Lakin to get her arm X-rayed."
And before either could say anything the nurse had begun walking again to a separate room, standing in the door and extending and arm inside, gesturing for Corin to enter.
Keeping her head down, she walked inside and sat down on the plastic coated bed. The nurse leant forward and slowly unhooked her arm from the jacket-sling, shaking her head and smiling as she gently pushed on Corin's shoulders to lie her down.
"I will step out of the room now and you'll hear a slight buzzing sound. That is the X-ray working. Do you have any questions?"
As Corin shook her head, the nurse smiled at her and left, closing the door behind her. Soon enough the buzzing sound began and Corin attempted to keep her eyes closed and not think that she was needed back at the store. What would her aunty think if she heard that Corin was at the hospital with a stranger?
The door re-opened and a man in a white coat entered, her rescuer close behind him, coming to stand close to her as Corin sat up, using her good arm to keep her balanced.
"I'm Doctor White, and I'll be having a look at your X-ray, Corin." The Doctor smiled at her as the nurse handed him her X-ray. He made a few sounds and pointed to a few places on the picture, mumbling to the nurse next to him.
She could feel the masculine presence next to her becoming slightly agitated and Corin couldn't help the small feeling of butterflies growing in her stomach. She looked up at him and smiled though he was too busy glaring daggers at the medical professionals infront of them.
"Right. Corin," Doctor White only just seemed to notice the male presence next to Corin and extended his arm towards him. "I'm sorry, you are?"
Kallm removed his hand from behind Corin and shook his hand. "Kallm. Is it broken?"
Kallm. Corin repeated the name in her head. She liked the way the name rolled off of her lips. She hadn't heard a name like it before. It was unique. Just like him.
The Doctor laughed and winked at Corin, finding Kallm's excessive concern hilarious.
"It isn't broken Kallm, but I'm afraid that it is fractured. Corin had put too much pressure on it. Can you tell me how it happened?"
At this Kallm grinned, then, feeling slightly guilty, toned it down to a smile. "I ran into her. Literally."
The Doctor chucked at that and nodded. He seemed like a lovely man, his thinning white hair had light glinting through it, making it seem thinner than it probably was. His height matched Kallm's and the golden wedding band on his finger seemed to have been there for a while.
He probably heard of these cases often.
"I'll put it in cast, just to keep it from moving. She should come back in about two weeks for me to have another look at it. Best news is that it'll be healing well."
Kallm nodded at him as Doctor White signed a few sheets of paper, handing them to nurse and shaking Kallm's hand again. He smiled at Corin before taking his leave.
Corin attempted to slide off the bed, but Kallm put his hand on her shoulder, shaking his head at her.
"Wait for the nurse."
Nodding, Corin sat back down. A few moments later the nurse was back with Doctor White carrying a cast for her arm.
This was going to be lovely to explain to Lirat aunty.
