Chapter 27
⚔ The Right Way ⚔
Corin leaned closer to the door that had just been pushed shut and placed her head on the framing.
She had been coming out of her room to get some water when she saw Vodia's frame walking into Kayana's bedroom, and a hard feeling settled deep into her stomach. She knew Vodia would never hurt her, but he had been betrayed.
The old feelings came back to haunt Corin then, that she was the reason that Kayana had been separated from Raian and she was also the reason that Vodia had been separated from his love. She had acted like a spoilt child, not thinking about the consequences of her actions, especially how it would affect those around her.
It was also the first time she had seen the disappointment in her father's eyes, because of her. Corin leant her back on the door, sliding down on it until she was sitting on the ground. It must mean something that she had come back to try and fix it? Anything?
But you didn't. It was Kallm. The better part of her whispered in her mind. And it was true. Without Kallm she would have never thought that she could have fixed it.
Just then another door clicked open and a disheveled Kallm walked out, his chest on display and his pyjama pants low on his hips. Corin hadn't realised that she had begun crying, but she definitely noticed the smile that lit up her face when her eyes landed on Kallm's groggy gaze and infectious grin as he noticed her sitting on the ground. She also saw the exact moment he noticed her tears and his grin dropped, replaced with furious blinking as he tried to rid the sleep from his eyes as he walked towards her.
Kneeling in front of her, Kallm placed on of his hands on Corin's cheeks, using his thumb to wipe away her tears. Without thinking, Corin leaned her face into his hand and looked at him. This gentle boy who risked everything to help make his brother happy again, even if it meant pretending to get married to the girl who ruined it all in the first place. He had stolen her heart in the middle of all this and Corin was sad to see the end.
Kallm simply remained kneeling, not saying anything except moving to next to Corin and pulling her into his side. Why was it whenever he saw his lavender in the hallway, she was always crying? What was it that made her so sad?
"Shh my Lavender." He whispered into her hair as he kissed her head.
Corin felt a bubbling in her chest as she heard him call her that again. She hadn't realised how much she yearned for it. But surely this did not mean anything, right?
She lifted her head, looking at Kallm's calm eyes staring back. Corin leaned up a little more and Kallm's grip tightened on her waist. She saw the uncertainty swimming in his eyes and instead of doing what she had planned, Corin smiled at him and landed a kiss on the corner of his mouth, before laying her head back on his shoulder.
Blushing, Corin kept her hands to herself before Kallm noticed why she was in a ball. Letting out a little laugh, he lifted her hand and placed it on his bare chest. He could feel the heat from her face burning into him and when he looked at her, she moved her face to bury it further into him.
Kallm laughed a little more as he locked his fingers with hers and laid it on his stomach. She really had taken her heart. And he couldn't deny that he was the happiest that he had ever been, right here with her. But he couldn't let his wishes get too high. This wedding was just a farce.
The arrangements were being made in front of his brother, but Kallm knew there was no actual wedding. There was nothing planned and the thought made him more than a little sad. A pulling feeling brought him back to the present and Kallm reminded himself of the plan, how Corin was the reason his brother had lost Kayana. What if Kayana could not bring his brother back?
As he went to disentangle himself, Corin's hand tightened on his and although she wasn't looking at him, Kallm could feel her burrowing more and he stopped.
That was an issue for another day. Tonight, he could be happy.
Placing his own head on top of hers, he closed his eyes. He had forgotten to ask her why they were sitting in front of Kayana's room, but he guessed now was not the time.
The door behind Corin opened a few moments later and Kallm heard hushed voices but he was too comfortable to care why anyone was in his room. All he cared about was the soft being in his arms and how she had splayed herself all over him. Even the wet spot on his chest did not deter him if it meant she was safe and there.
A light touch on his free side had Kallm's consciousness returning fast and he opened his eyes to a dark corridor and two figures standing in front of him. He clenched Corin harder until his eyes focused and he realised it was Kayana and... Vodia?
Kallm's jaw dropped and he looked at Kayana who was wrapped around Vodia's arm and holding his hand. She had removed her scarf and glowed next to him. Kallm looked back at his older brother and saw that his eyes were trained on Corin and his tangled form but that he also showed a semblance of the old Vodia who enjoyed life and work equally. The one who was the happiest when he heard that he would get to wed his first love. Not the one who had come home after losing her.
Vodia made eye contact with Kallm and raised a cheeky eyebrow and Kallm flushed. He attempted to pull his interlocked arm away from Corin, but she simply held tighter, her eyebrows furrowing together.
"No Kallm. Stay."
Kallm's jaw dropped even further and his eyes widened at the same time Kayana lifted a hand to her mouth at Corin's display. Vodia grinned at his brother and winked at his shying frame.
"Bhaiya, I didn't -" Kallm attempted to defend himself but Vodia simply held his hand up to stop his brother but the grin never left his face.
He leaned close to his wife then, and whispered something in her ear. She nodded and swiftly kissed him on the cheek before she kneeled forward and woke Corin.
"Come on Corin, it's time to go to bed."
Corin's half-asleep eyes opened and first locked with Kallm's open disbelieving ones. She smiled at him, the only thought crossing her mind here was that she could get used to seeing him first thing in the mornings. Her mind didn't register much else apart from Kallm sitting on the floor next to her and the patch of wetness on his chest. Corin clumsily used her hand to wipe most of it away, and mumbled a sorry as Kayana led her away.
Vodia watched after them until they disappeared into Corin's room with Kayana sparing one final glance at her husband who was now back.
Vodia sat down next to Kallm and raised an eyebrow at his brother who shoved one hand into his hair and blew out a breathe. Both brothers brought their knees up and locked their forearms around them.
Vodia sat and waited for Kallm to say something, but when he didn't even look, Vodia knew he'd have to say something.
"Thank you."
Kallm looked at him then, astonished that instead of being yelled at, he was getting thanked.
"I know what you did. Kayana told me everything." Vodia turned to glance at Kallm, his head bowed but he could see the small smile on his face. "You took a chance for your brother, and I love you for it." Vodia cleared his throat as he expressed himself to his brother. With Kayana it was different, he could say all this but with his brother, he felt very out of his depth.
Clapping on hand on his shoulder, Vodia looked straight ahead, unable to look at Kallm's smug face.
Then Vodia realised what else he needed to talk about.
"So, your marriage then?"
Kallm's smirk fell off his face then and he looked away. He shook his head and hoped Vodia understood what he was saying.
"Why not?"
"It wasn't part of the plan."
Vodia listened intently, he knew that wasn't the only reason that Kallm and Corin weren't getting married.
"Plans can change."
"I haven't asked her properly."
"You can always ask her tonight."
Kallm's frustration rose and he didn't know why Vodia was pushing so much. The point of the plan was to get Vodia and Kayana back together. So why didn't he just let it go?
"No arrangements have been made."
"You forget who I am, brother." Vodia replied patiently. He knew it was hard to Kallm to say exactly what was stopping him from marrying Corin. And it wasn't any of the things he had already said for Vodia knew his brother and knew that none of this would have stopped him.
Kallm muttered something under his breath then and Vodia leaned his ear forwards.
"What was that?"
"I don't know if I can forgive her." He mumbled out a moment later and Vodia could see the toll it took on him to say it now, when it was so obvious that he had lost himself to her.
"I have." Vodia smiled at him. Kallm looked at his brother, confused.
"You have? But how? Why? She was the reason that Kayana left. She was the reason -"
"That we are back together." Vodia interrupted him. "Listen Kallm. Corin made a mistake, but it was also because of her Kayana became mine in the first place. I know things happened, but Corin also helped bring us back together."
Kallm felt a pulling feeling inside of himself, pulling him both towards and away from Corin.
"Kallm, a person's mistake doesn't define them. It's how they try to fix them that does. Corin came back here to fix this. And not only for Kayana and I, but for you. She did all this for you." Placing his hand on Kallm's shoulder again, Vodia continued. "That girl is in love with you. She trusted you."
The pulling feeling in Kallm became a pushing feeling in one direction and he looked at his smiling brother. He seemed happy. And content. He didn't hold it against Corin.
"Do you love her too?"
Kallm couldn't move, the realisation coursing through him, but his brother was having none of that. Kallm had done so much for Vodia, and now it was his turn.
"Kallm."
"Yes." He breathed through his words, the shock was still strong but Kallm had made a decision.
Whenever anything happened, Vodia was the first person Kallm would tell, knowing that his older brother would always have a different viewpoint, one that would make him feel better and make his questioning mind become calm. But that brother had changed after Kayana.
But now because of Corin, he was back.
Kallm stood up then and waited for Vodia to stand. When he did, he hugged his brother. Vodia put his own arms around Kallm and clapped him on the back twice before pulling away and blinking twice as he saw Kallm turn away and wipe his own eyes.
"Now go." Vodia urged him, as he turned away to go back into Kayana's room.
Kallm looked at him confused and pointed to Vodia's own room, to which Vodia's only response was a sly wink before he closed the door.
Kallm shook his head affectionately and walked away.
There was a lot to be done.
