Chapter 26
⚔ The Right Way ⚔
Kayana hummed to herself as she separated the clothes before placing the darker pieces into the washer.
Picking up Vodia's now two-coloured shirt, Kayana sighed. She had nearly made a huge mistake revealing herself then. She couldn't do that to him right now. She saw the confusion in his eyes every time he caught himself remembering anything about her, and Kayana just wasn't ready to hurt him again.
But she still had to find a way to make everything up to Vodia.
What else could she do?
She placed the shirt into the machine and closed the lid. Pressing the buttons, Kayana turned around and leant on it as it began to shake.
She just needed him to remember the good times with her.
She needed to get him alone. But how?
At that moment Corin popped her head in, the rest of her body still behind the door as she smiled sneakily at Kayana. The latter glanced at her, an eyebrow raised under her scarf, until she heard heavier footsteps and Corin was pushed forward, the laundry in her arms now visible as Kallm stumbled in behind her.
"Sorry." Kallm smirked as Corin jerked her elbow in his direction. Atleast they were getting along.
"Just put it here." Kayana teased as she gestured to the counter.
Corin smiled at her as she hurriedly placed her load, and Kallm's, onto the spacious countertop.
"But I need something from you both too."
"Ji, Kayana?"
Kayana repeated her plan to the two then, not going into much detail, but just telling them that she wanted to have the evening to herself and Vodia. It was their job to take everyone out to dinner, at the excuse of wanting the families to get to know each other better.
Kayana also noticed that at the mention of the upcoming marriage, both Corin and Kallm had looked less nervous, almost a little pleased. And Kayana vowed to herself that she would help them any way that she could. But first they had to admit it to themselves.
⚔ The Right Way ⚔
Vodia looked at the time on his laptop. 10:42pm shone back at him as he yawned quietly into the back of his hand, before rubbing the bruised knuckles absentmindedly. Looking up over his screen he saw that the office looked pitch black, signalling that nearly everyone had gone home. Except him.
He could lie to himself about why he didn't want to go home, say that there was too much work to do, or that he really needed to be here. But even though he didn't want to admit it, he knew the truth. And it was because of that maid.
The thought shocked him into sitting upright. Why did he think it was the maid? Surely it was Raian, and consequently, the thought of Kayana which kept him up at night.
Right?
Slamming the screen shut, Vodia rested his forehead in his palms. Why was he really putting off going home?
Making a decision, Vodia began packing up, sliding his papers into his briefcase and grabbing his keys from the drawer. Slinging his jacket over his arm, Vodia stalked out of the office.
The drive seemed a blur to him and before he knew it, Vodia had arrived home, the schist pillars stood guarding the front door, and Vodia noticed that all lights were off. Checking his watch he realised it was past midnight. How long had he sat at his desk dreading coming back?
He just hoped no one was awake, so he wouldn't have to explain his lateness.
Walking in, Vodia opened the door slowly, taking his shoes off at the opening and quietly making his way inside. Walking up the stairs, Vodia made it to his room, dropping his jacket and briefcase on his desk and walking to his bedside. A glass of lukewarm milk sat by his bed and Vodia smiled as he walked towards it. Someone must've put it there recently before bed.
Reaching for it, Vodia took a large drink, stopping when he realised some had dripped onto his shirt. Vodia may be a businessman, but he was still just a man.
Taking his shirt off, Vodia decided that he should go put it in the laundry, knowing that by putting it off the milk would set and perhaps start to smell. The maid would fix it in the morning.
Muttering to himself, Vodia made his way outside, walking towards the end of the hallway to the laundry when his distracted mind realised that someone's light was still on. It seemed they had perhaps fallen asleep with their lamp on.
On closer inspection Vodia realised it was the maids room. If she was awake then maybe she'd know exactly what to do with this shirt. It was one of his favourites, having bought it with Kayana.
Knocking lightly, the slightly ajar door swung open more and Vodia noticed that the maid wasn't in her bed. About to turn around, he stopped as he heard quiet murmuring. His eyes darted to the window and there he saw the maid, finally without her scarf. He had no idea why she wore it so low, but he had never bothered to ask. But in this light, there was something familiar about her hair.
Stepping closer, Vodia closed the door behind him, the same rush of familiarity coming to him as when he had seen her firstly. The clicking of the door startled the maid and it seemed she searched for the ever present scarf - the same one that was laying discarded on her bed. Vodia saw it before she did and walked towards the bed.
She still hadn't turned around, instead turning away and Vodia heard the chiming of bells. Bells he had grown to love and adore and expected to hear for the rest of his life. The arm that hung by her side glistened in the moonlight, the bangles clinking together as she swung her hand straight down.
Something in Vodia's mind tried to push to the front, but he just waited. Waited for something he never thought would happen. Waited for this maid to turn around and tell him he was wrong. That he was going crazy.
But she didn't.
Vodia waited. His heart beating in his chest as the fragrance assaulted him once more, stronger in this room than on his clothes.
And by chance, by complete chance Vodia's eyes caught a menu. Walking towards the book on the bedside table, Vodia saw the menu from the restaurant that he and Kayana had gone to when they were searching for Raian, and plastered under it was a nearly crumbling flower.
A steel hand gripped Vodia's heart.
"Turn around." Was all that he could muster as he watched the maid cover her arms and turn slowly. It seemed the world had stopped and to Vodia it felt as if it was hours before she had turned around completely.
Vodia's hand dropped the shirt as he felt the small frame slam into his chest, his arms automatically going around her, crushing her into him. He bent his head into her hair, taking a deep breath, welcoming her unique smell.
"Kayana." He breathed into her, the name, feeling like poison before now felt as soft as water, flowing from him. He felt her small arms around his waist, tightening with every breath he would take, but he didn't mind. It meant she was here.
She was here!
"Vodia," Kayana spoke into his neck, before placing a kiss there. Startled, Vodia froze as Kayana placed her hands on his face, and very carefully, very gingerly placed a small kiss on his lips.
Vodia smiled, placing a small peck on her nose, before disentangling himself from her. Losing his heat, Kayana wrapped her arms around herself, unshed tears shone in her eyes in the light the lamp gave off.
"I'm sorry."
No matter what Vodia was feeling, when he looked back at her face, her tanned, hazel eyed, blushing furiously face, he realised he wasn't angry. He couldn't be. But he was sad.
This was the love of his life. This was Kayana. She was back.
But he needed to know.
"Maid?"
Kayana laughed, swiping at her face and Vodia nearly melted at the sound. It had been so long.
"It was my idea in Kallm's master plan." Kayana replied, slowly looking up through her eyelashes at Vodia, her Vodia standing in front of her.
This wasn't how she was supposed to tell him, he wasn't supposed to find out like this, but when he hadn't come home that evening, even after when everyone had returned from their dinner, Kayana had begun to worry.
It was when she was praying that Vodia had entered and Kayana had panicked. She didn't know how he would react. But she knew anger would be better than the betrayed look she saw on his face right now.
Rushing forward, Kayana grabbed his hand and led him to the bed, then knelt in front of him and guided his palm to her cheek.
"Vodia, I'm so sorry. I'm so so sorry."
"Do you know how excruciating it's been? To think of you? Everytime I walked into our room - My room. And when you come back, you hide yourself from me? Being able to see me, but not giving me the same choice?"
Kayana gulped, the tears pushing at her again, but she wouldn't cry. He deserved answers.
"I wanted to show you that I deserved you. I wanted to prove to you that I loved you."
"How long would it have taken for you to tell me?" The knot in Vodia's throat came out in his words and Kayana's stomach churned. Not because she was afraid of him, but because she had hurt him. It was her. She had hurt the only man who had ever put her safety and respect over everything.
All Vodia could do was look at her face, but he couldn't help the feelings inside him. Especially when they involved the thought of Kayana with another man.
Moving around Kayana, Vodia paced to the window and ran a hand through his hair. He turned and leaned on the sill, looking at a still kneeling Kayana.
"And Raian?"
"No! I wasn't with him. I never was." Kayana muttered the last part so quietly that Vodia wasn't sure he had hear her.
"What? You weren't with him? Then where were you?" Vodia threw his hands up in frustration, this time putting both his hands behind his head.
Kayana gets up and sits on the bed, patting the space next to her. Although her time with Vodia had been short, she had gotten familiar with her husband. She knew when she had to be the cool one.
He dragged his feet to the bed and sat on the other end, looking at Kayana expectantly.
"It was all part of Kallm and Corin's plan," Kayana began, and all throughout her telling her story she was inching forward, finally coming to an inch before Vodia as she ended it to the point of her plan for the night.
"They love each other, you know. I know he was trying to do the right thing by us, but I think this plan is as much for them as it is for us, Vodia." But Vodia's eyes were glazed over at Kayana's proximity.
His hand shot out, placing itself behind her head, holding her in place as Kayana's lips opened slightly at the contact.
"You were never with Raian? Why didn't you come with me?" Vodia needed to know the answer.
"Because I loved you too much. I was letting you go." Was Kayana's tearful reply as she saw the anguish in his eyes. Though his hand was steady on her neck, it wasn't hurting her, a privilege that she hadn't given him. She wasn't there for him.
"Never again." Before Kayana could finish her vigorous nod, Vodia's lips came to hers. This kiss was much rougher, much more emotionally charged than hers, and she realised the Vodia really was the right one for her. He was her other half. She needed him like she needed air.
In between his kisses, Vodia had only one question left. "What were you waiting for?"
Kayana looked him in the eyes as she said the two words that had stopped her from coming on a flight as soon as she could. "Divorce papers."
Vodia's mouth stopped and he sat up. Cross linking his hands on his knees, Vodia smirked lightly at his vest thrown on the ground, but smoothing his expression as he looked at his glowing wife, ruffled from his affection.
"So was I."
The admission stunned Kayana as she stared at him. "You didn't?"
"No. Did you?"
"Never."
This time it was Kayana's turn to attack Vodia as she leapt at him, landing on his chest as he stretched out on her bed. His arms went around her waist and it finally felt right.
Her face so close to his, Vodia couldn't believe this was true. He reached a hand up to her face, brushing away the hair that had come undone from her neat sleeping style, and he leant up to kiss her nose causing Kayana to close her eyes.
"You're so beautiful." He whispered, to which Kayana finally replied, as she grasped his hand and kissed his purple knuckles.
"I love you."
