Chapter 14

The Right Way

"Am I hearing you right, Jiji?" Ionido Nalad paced his study as he held the phone tightly in his fist. Was his sister telling the truth? What trouble had his wilful daughter gotten into now? Sending her to live with her aunty was supposed to keep her away from these issues.

"Yes Bhaiya, she -"

"She's not ready, how can she get married? How did she make this decision?" Without talking to me first Ionido added to himself. He had lost both his children in the span of a few months, his childhood friendship being the cause. He didn't know if he would ever forgive himself for putting his children in that position. And Kayana. Ionido massaged his brows with his fingertips. That poor girl had to pay the price for his daughter's jealousy. He had thought he had raised his children better than that.

He hadn't even heard from her, from the girl who had been like his other daughter, ever since she had gotten married. He had wished her the best from his home, but he worried for her all the same.

"Bhaiya -"

"Who is the boy? Is he forcing her? What has happened?" Ionido couldn't control his thoughts, he had been living in a shell ever since he had lost the love and laughter of his home, Caterina being the only one who could get him to smile lately.

"Bhaiya, calm yourself. I think it would be best if you spoke to Corin yourself." Though guilt and anger coursed through him, Iondio knew his sister was right. He had to speak to Corin himself. And he had to find Raian.

He may still be angry, but this was the question of his little sisters life.

"Very well Jiji, I will see Corin." And with that, Ionido hung up.

"Ji? Are you okay?" Ionido looked up to see Caterina's scarfed head poking through the doorway. She was the perfectly put together wife infront of company, but with him, she was his best friend. And he wouldn't have had it any other way.

Iondio shook his head at her, and Caterina understood straight away. Gliding forward, she took Ionido's large palm in hers and guided him to the sofa near the wall, seating him first and placing herself on his knee. Automatically, Ionido's arms went around her and she leaned her body on his shoulder.

"What is wrong, my love?" She gently whispered to him, making sure not to push him with her voice. She knew he would tell her in his own time.

His arms tightened around her, and Iondio looked up. "Corin is getting married."

Shock coloured Caterina's features as she attempted to disentangle herself, but Ionido's embrace was too secure.

"I'm sorry? She is getting married? To whom?"

"I do not know yet. But I think we should go see her."

Caterina knew Iondio was right and she took a deep breath. Something did not seem right. It had not been long since Corin had been sent to Lirat's, and she knew her daughter may be reckless, but she was not blindly idiotic. Looking back at her husband, Caterina could see he was more distressed by this news than she was. He did always have a sweet spot for his little girl. Leaning down, Caterina planted a kiss on his head.

"Let us get Raian." Though Caterina knew her son was still upset over Corin's betrayal, she also knew that he would protect her. And if there was anyone who could talk any sense into her, it would be him. Or Kayana. It seemed that Ionido had the same thought as he looked up at his wife.

But neither commented further on the matter.

Ionido nodded, picking up his phone and dialling his sons' number.

After a few rings, Ionido heard the voice that he had been craving to hear.

"Pita ji? Is everything okay?"

Taking a deep breathe, after a reassuring smile from his wife, Ionido continued.

"Beta. Your sister is getting married."

"Raian ji? Is that Nalad ji?"
