Chapter 46

Jenna

I'm supposed to be walking my new client from the city's baseball team through the ins and outs of his contract, but I keep getting distracted. Primarily by my daydream of the incredible night I had yesterday with Tanner. He took me on the most romantic date and showered me with love and attention. And he took fantastic care of me when we got back to his place afterward.

My mind can't help but keep wandering back to that memory, or rather, memories. He showed me his love not once, not twice, but five times last night. Every time I move just right, I can feel the delicious ache of what he did to me between my thighs. So, really, it's not my fault that I can't focus. I'll blame it on the achiness.

Yeah, that's right. I'm experiencing the aftermath of a long hard night of battle. The battle of the groins. Penis versus vagina. Sword versus sheath.

I see my new client looking at me expectantly. Shit, did he just ask me something?

I clear my throat and try to shake off the daydream as it threatens to overtake my mind again. "Sorry, what was that?"

He chuckles lightly, breezing past the fact that I clearly have not been paying attention. He repeats his question, and I luckily follow along this time.

Head out of the gutter, Jenna! You have work to do!

After another twenty minutes of answering questions, with difficulty- thanks to my raging hormones- the meeting comes to a close. I really need to get my shit together. No matter how good the sex is- no, scratch that- no matter how amazingly incredible and breathtaking the sex is, I should not let it distract me from doing my job even if it makes me wetter than Niagara Falls just thinking about it.

Get it together, girl! One more meeting, then you can go home and get naked with your man.

I take a deep, cleansing breath- one more meeting. I can do this.

An hour and a half later, I've finished up with all of my clients for the day and can finally let my mind go free. I start thinking about what to do tonight for Tanner since he made yesterday so special for me. I think I'll showcase my new outfit for him while I make dinner. Then after, I'll give him his dessert.

Mmmm. Yeah, he can have as much dessert as he'd like. And I think I'll help myself to a few servings as well.

As my mind wanders to later, I check my phone. It's been on silent all morning while I've been in my meetings. When I look at the screen, I'm shocked. I have several missed calls and a few voicemails.

Wow! What the hell did I miss?

I see an incoming call as I'm about to check my voicemail. It's Chase. "Hey, Chase. What's up?"

He sounds concerned about something. I can hear the stress in his voice. "Hey, do you know where T.J. is?"

He was supposed to be with the guys right now for an interview. They were all supposed to meet up as a team to answer questions for some local reporters. That was several hours ago, though.

"Isn't he with you? He texted me when he left, saying he was headed to the interview."

I stop in my tracks. He didn't show up? That doesn't make any sense. Chase replies before I go too far down the rabbit hole. "He never showed, Tay. But you said he was heading here? Maybe he had the address wrong."

I start going through every possible explanation in my head. Maybe Chase is right, maybe he got the address wrong, or maybe the driver took a wrong turn. Hell, maybe he got stuck in horrendous traffic. If that's the case, he's probably still stuck there.

I hum my agreement to Chase as my mind starts filtering through the scenarios cooking up in my imagination.

I'm still thinking things through when Chase speaks up again. "It could be that simple. I just wanted to check with you. We tried calling him, but he's not picking up his phone. It rang a few times at first. Now, it's just going straight to voicemail."

Okay, that's weird. He always charges his phone. Did he forget? Is his charger broken?

I wrap things up quickly with Chase and set to work trying to figure out what the hell is going on. I'm trying not to let worry settle in, but I have a strange feeling in my gut. And I don't like it one bit.

I dial Tanner's number, knowing he won't pick up, knowing his phone is either off or dead, but I can't help but try it anyway. It's no surprise when the line goes straight to voicemail. I then try calling his agent. Perhaps he knows something the rest of us don't. I'm met with the same results- straight to voicemail.

Shit!

Then I see the notification on the top of my screen- new voicemail. I quickly tap the notification and listen to the messages. The first is from Liam, asking about Tanner. The second is from Chase, asking the same. The third is from a number I don't recognize, and it makes my stomach turn for some reason.

I click on the message. It's from someone at the hospital not far from his apartment. They were vague, asking me to call them back, giving me a contact to ask for when I returned the call. My heart drops. Something happened.

I hurry and call the number back, asking for the person they told me to contact from the voicemail. A woman gets on the line. I tell her who I am and about the message I received. She tells me I was listed as an emergency contact for Tanner. The next thing she tells me makes my blood turn to ice.

She gently speaks through the line. "I'm sorry, ma'am, Mr. Levine has been in an accident. He's currently a patient here..."

Her words start to fade into the background as I begin to break down mentally.

This can't be happening. This can't be happening. Not again!

My hands are shaking, and my throat feels tight. The woman didn't give me many details, just that there was an accident, his doctor's name, and the floor he was admitted to.

~

The second I hang up, I fly outside and flag down a cab, giving them the name of the hospital. My hands are still quaking intensely. I can hardly hit the button I need on my phone to call Chase. When I finally manage, he picks up right away. I let him know what happened and that I'm heading to the hospital. He tries to soothe me, but it's pointless. Nothing can help me right now- nothing but Tanner. I need to get to the hospital and see for myself that he's fine.

When I get there, I'll see it wasn't a big deal. Everything is going to be okay.

He's fine. It's no big deal.

He's fine.

He's fine.

The tears are welling up as the taxi pulls up to the hospital. My breathing becomes more erratic as I look out the window.

I find myself staring up at the stone building- to the same place my brother took his last breath.
