Chapter 42
Torre POV
My heart hammered in my chest as I walked out of the University lecture hall and out onto campus. The day was exceptionally sunny and around me everyone was laughing and talking with their friends. I couldn't be more nervous. I knew that I could easily just forgive Niall and everything could go back to the way it was before, but there's something holding me back--fear. I'm afraid something like this will happen again.
I spot Niall's car, the one he drove on our first day, and start walking toward it. He must spot me walking towards him, because as I get closer, he gets out of the car and waits on the side. He looks amazing, as usual. The attraction never faded.
"Hi." I say nervously.
"Hi." He mirrors. Without saying anything else, he pulls me in his arms and hugs me. I sigh and just let myself enjoy his warm embrace.
We let go and he opens the door for me, motioning for me to get in. He walks around to the other side of the car and gets in the driver's seat.
"So, um, where are we going?" I ask.
"I'm not sure. Where do you want to go?"
"I don't want an audience." Is all I say.
"We could go sit on the beach? The beachfront is a couple blocks from here." He suggests. Its good as anything I guess.
"That sounds fine." I say. He nods and starts heading in that direction. I can tell he's nervous, and I'm sure he can tell that I am too. This will be hard for both of us.
"So, uh, how have you been?" He asks, breaking the silence.
"Okay, I guess. I have all my finals in the next couple days and then I'll be done with school."
"Thats great, Tor." He says, and I just nod.
"I saw you on the news last night." I bravely say. I try to read his expression, but I can't tell what he is thinking when I say this.
"Yeah? And what do you think of it?" He looking at me.
"Um, what do you think of it?"
"It was my decision, mostly. Obviously the boys had to agree for it to happen, but I originally suggested it. I'd had enough. They were asking too much of me. They always have." He said. We were now at the beach, so he parked the car and we walked down the shore, taking a seat in two of the chairs that were there. Luckily there weren't many people around. There weren't hardly any, actually.
"Good. I'm glad for you, then." I said. We sat there for a moment, staring out at the ocean. The waves were crashing into the shore. It was beautiful to watch, really. I didn't know what to say, or where to start.
"Um, I wrote you something." Niall said, pulling an envelope out of his pocket. If I thought he looked nervous earlier, I'd say he was probably freaking out now. His hands were a bit shaky as he handed it to me.
"Do you want me to read it now?" I asked.
"Yeah." He said.
I opened the envelope carefully, not wanting to rip whatever was inside it. I pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it. It looked like a letter.
"Just, uh, take your time." Niall said, so I started reading.
It was handwritten, a page and a half. The print was nice and neat. I can picture Niall sitting there, forcing himself to write this note in his best handwritting.
The Reasons I Fell In Love With You was written at the top. This was more than I asked for. I read through the letter slowly, wanting to take in every word. It was beautiful, everything he wrote. It's almost as if I can't believe he wrote something like this. Or that I can't believe he wrote something like this for me. As I go through it, I get more and more emotional.
I feel as if it is hard to truly write from the heart, but what Niall has given me and I am now reading is straight from the heart. I have no doubt now that he was telling the complete truth that he fell in love with me. You can't fake something like this.
A few strangled tears escape my eyes as I reach the end of the letter and Niall sees them.
"Oh baby, don't cry. It wasn't meant to make you sad." He says, rubbing my back, completely misunderstanding.
"No. I'm not upset. It's just," I sort of sob out, because this is singlehandedly the most romantic, thoughtful, and truly kind gesture anyone has ever done for me. "This is the most beautiful thing I've ever read." I say, leaning in to hug Niall again.
"Well, I just really wanted to show you how much I care for you and how wonderful you are and how sorry I am." He rambles.
"I know. I know you're sorry, Niall. And this is all just a huge mess."
"And it's all my fault." Niall interrupts.
"We need to move on, though." I said. "We can't move forward if we let this set us back." A look of relief took over Niall's face.
"Yeah, we do."
"We're going to have to build up our trust again. I mean, you lied to me." Niall looked so regretfull. "It'll be okay, though."
"We can make it." Niall said.
"Yeah, yeah we can." I said slowly. I looked up into Niall's eyes, and that was all the confirmation that I needed. I knew I was making the right decision.
"I promise I won't hide anything from you anymore. I promise. Thank you for giving me another chance. You mean the world to me, Tor."
"I know. That letter was enough confirmation." I said giggling.
"Did you really like it?" Niall asked a slight blush taking over his face.
"Yes, Niall. I loved it. I'm going to keep it forever." I said, looking deeply into his eyes.
As if we could read each other's minds, we leaned towards each other and pressed our lips together. The feeling was amazing. It's been too long since I've felt his lips on mine. And that spark is still there. Even after a disagreement like this, that energy is still here.
"Torre, I want to go public. Right now." Niall said, breaking from the kiss. I looked at him a little strangely.
"That's find with me, but don't feel like we have to." I said. I didn't want him to do this just because of everything that happened.
"No, I'm ready and I don't want to have to worry about rumors or anything. I just want to do this now, if you're okay with it."
"I'm fine with it." I said encouragingly, still perched in Niall's arms.
"Okay, how should we do it?" Niall asked.
"I don't know. How do people do it these days?"
"Well, there's been pictures of us together already, so why don't we just post a picture together and say something, not outright, but something that will let them know we are together." Niall said, seeming like an excited five-year-old.
"That's fine with me." I said, trying to seem as excited as him, but it was hard considering how ecstatic he seemed about this.
"Okay, let's take the picture." He said, pulling his phone out and putting the camera up.
"This is the first picture we've ever taken together." I said, smiling at the thought.
"Well let's make it a good one, yeah?" He said. "Smile, gorgeous." He put the phone up and we both smiled into the camera. He snapped the picture and then we both looked at it. "Perfect." He said.
"That's a good one." I confirmed. He then pulled up instagram and pulled the picture out there.
"So what are you going to write?" I asked.
"Hmmm..How about 'You were mine for the summer,' since it's nearly summer, and we're together, and-."
"Sounds great." I said, pecking his cheek and shutting him up.
"Okay." He said. He wrote out the caption and posted it.
"It's done." He said.
"Done." I copied.
"I'm so glad it's you." Niall said.
"And I'm glad it's you." We were both quite for a minute, just taking in the moment. It was one of the last times we would probably be able to be out together and not get much attention. The sun was just setting on the horizon, and the waves were crashing onto the shore beautifully.
"Can we just stay here forever?" I asked Niall, breaking the silence.
"We can stay here for as long as you want, babe. As long as you promise you'll stay with me."
"I promise." I said, and I had never before meant a promise as much as I just had.
