Chapter 33
Torre POV
I woke up today feeling nervous but excited. Today was the day I would actually bring a boy home to meet my family. Kind of crazy. Ahhhh.
I was currently sitting at our table eating a bowl or cheerios with Eliza.
"Darling, you'll be fine. Just stay cool and your dad will too. Do you really think they won't like Niall?" I tried comforting his nerves.
"It's not that I think they won't like him, I'm just nervous about the whole 'popstar' thing."
"Yeah but I think doing something as normal as bringing him home for dinner might ease their minds a little bit. As long as they see that he's just like everyone else, they'll be okay with it."
"Yeah, you're right." I said, suddenly feeling a whole lot better. I finished eating my cheerios and headed into the bathroom to shower. After drying my hair and putting on a bit of make-up, I got dressed, and within an hour, I was ready to go.
Niall was going to pick me up and drive us. We thought it would be less intimidating if we didn't show up riding in one of the big, black cars with a driver.
I waited down in the lobby of the apartment complex for Niall to get here. I had only been down there for about five minutes before I saw Niall pull up in the same car he drove on our first date. I headed out the doors and he was there to greet me.
"Hey babe." He said casually, giving me a quick hug and peck on the lips. He opened my door for me, and I hopped in.
"Hi." I said excitedly.
"How are you?" He asked as we pulled out of the parking lot and onto the street.
"Pretty good. You?" I asked.
"I'm nervous." He answered honestly, but was smiling.
"I'm a bit nervous too, but I really don't think you have anything to worry about. They'll love you."
"Let's hope." He chuckled.
We were driving along the interstate and I couldn't help but think how wonderful this all felt. This was all right. I had a wonderful boyfriend. We were driving in an amazing car with the top down on a sunny day to my parents house, for us all to have a nice dinner together. What isn't amazing about that?
Niall turned the radio up and the music blasted from the car. Some top hit song was on, that I happened to know all the words too. Niall started singing along loudly. Normally, I wouldn't either, as I was a shy soul, but I couldn't help myself. I started belting the lyrics out right there with him. At that moment, as if things didn't seem perfect before, they were even better now.
***
Twenty minutes later, we were pulling into my parent's house driveway.
"It's time." I said excitedly. I could just picture my mother and sister waiting for us by the door and now watching us through the window.
"I'll get your door." Niall said. He got out and came over to my side of the car and opened the door for me.
"Thanks." I said.
"Of course." He let out a breathy laugh.
"Relax. " I said, looking him in the eye and taking his hand in mine. He smiled and we headed up the path to the front door. I gave a brief knock before just opening the door and walking in. Niall followed closely behind me, our hands still interlocked. Before we could even round the corner into the kitchen, my mom was coming up to us, her wooden spoon in hand and apron covering her front.
"Hello, hello! Niall, so nice to finally meet you." She said, engulfing him in a hug. Oh yeah, I forgot to warn her, my family were huggers. Niall didn't seem to mind though.
"It's nice to meet you too, Mrs. White."
"Oh enough with that, call me Diane."
"Sure." Niall said smiling.
"Oh and my baby. Haven't seen you since spring break." My mom said, catching me in one of her suffocating hugs too.
"I've been busy with school." I said. Amy and my dad soon joined us in the kitchen.
"Torreeeee!" She squealed, another hug.
"Hey Amy!" I said. My dad and Niall awkwardly shook hands.
"Niall." Niall said, giving him a brief nod.
"Brad White." My dad returned.
"So you're Niall, huh?" Amy said, gesturing to Niall.
"And you must be Amy." Niall said. Amy leaned in for a hug from him too. Goodness gracious, they're going to scare him away with all their hugs. "It's nice to finally meet ya."
"And you."
"Well how was the drive here? Was there bunches of traffic?" My mother asked, motioning for all of us to take a seat at the kitchen table.
"It was good, actually." I said.
"We cruised right in, no traffic or nothing." Niall said.
"That's excellent. Usually the freeway is blocked up on nice days like this." My dad commented.
"We didn't have any problems." Niall said.
"Torre and Amy, would you set the table please."
I looked towards Niall. "That's Amy and I's job. Always has been. We set the table." I laughed.
"Hey, that's a good skill." He joked.
"At least when they live on their own, I can rest assured they'll be able to set a table properly." My mom laughed. As Amy and I laid out the dishes, knives, forks, and spoons, she brought a plate of steaming spaghetti over to the table. I took a seat next to Niall.
"Well, dig in, everybody." My mother said, and we passed the plate of spaghetti around spooning it onto our plates, starting with Niall.
"So, you're in a band, right Niall." My dad asked.
"Dad, for goodness sake. I told you all of this beforehand. You said you would try to act cool." Amy complained from across the table. Niall just started laughing. My dad raised his arms as if to say 'what do you want me to do?'
"Yes, yes, I'm in a band. We're working on doing the last touches on our album right now, so we're here promoting it in the states and recording a last couple things." Niall explained. My mom nodded her head appreciatively.
"How long have you been here?"
"We've been here for the last three months." Niall said.
"It must be so hard being away from your family for so long." My mother said, looking at me sympathetically.
"Yeah, it's not real fun. But my band-mates, they're like family to me now. And Torre, she's been a big help. She keeps me company." Niall said and I knew I was blushing.
"Any chance I could meet those band-mates?" Amy asked from across the table. Surprisingly, she had been rather quiet so far.
"Um, Amy, I don't think. They're really busy-"
"No, they'd love to meet you. Just come out downtown sometime and you can come to the house. We'll have a pool party or something." Niall said. And eeekkkk he just got more and more perfect.
"That would be great! I'd love that." Amy said. This was going well, so far that is.
"So what do you do, Amy?" Niall asked. "I'm a senior in high school. I want to go to AUC for a marketing degree when I graduate." she said.
"Well, sounds like you have two very smart girls, Mr. White." Niall said. He sure was leaving a good impression.
"Yes, we've been blessed with two beautiful daughters. Do you have any brothers or sisters, Niall?" My dad asked.
"Yes, I have one brother, Greg. He's married and has a little boy now. I miss them so much when I'm away." Niall said.
"I'm sure. I can't imagine." My mom said. We continued talking through dinner, my mom and dad talking about what they do for a living, Niall talking more about the band and such. We told them how we met, where we went for our first date, stuff like that. My mom brought out the tub of ice cream and we all had ice cream sundaes for dessert. Everything was going well. Better than I ever could have imagined, actually. Who knew my parents would be so cool about me bringing a guy home. I guess I'll have to thank Amy for that one.
"Well, before you two head off, maybe we could play a game of catch phrase?" My mom suggested. We were all sitting around the fire pit on our deck. It was getting dark out, but it wasn't terribly late and we didn't have to leave yet."
"Sure. I've never played before." Niall said.
"Oh, it's easy. When it's your turn, you try to describe the word without actually saying it. Then, pass it on." I explained. We arranged ourselves in a circle and grabbed the game.
I sat next to Niall and my sister, so they were on the same team, along with my dad and then it was me and my mom.
"Okay, I'll start." I said, pressing the button. The word 'snowman' flashed across the screen. "Okay this is something you build outside, in the winter, when it's really, really cold and you use three balls and then a carrot for a nose-"
"Snowman!" my mom shouted out.
"Yep! I said and passed it on to Niall. His eyebrow furrowed for a second and then he started talking.
"Um its something you use to clean your teeth."
"Toothbrush!" Amy shouted. Niall nodded and passed the game around the circle. My mom now had it.
"This is an instrument you can play. It has strings on it-"
"Guitar." I said. She passed it to Amy.
"It's something you-" She was cut off by a buzzer sounding.
"Woohoo! We got the first point!" I high-fived my mom. "You did good though, Niall, for your first time and all, I'm just better." I joked.
"We'll see about the next round then." He teased. We continued playing for a couple more rounds, and in the end, Niall, Amy, and my dad did end up winning. Must've been beginners luck. We were now getting ready to head back and were saying goodbye to my parents.
"It was so nice meeting you, Niall. You'll have to bring Torre back more often since it seems she'll only come to see us if you're with her." She said.
"I sure will." He complied.
"So I'll call you then about that pool party." Amy said.
"Definitely, just whenever you're out our way come on over. We'd love to have you."
"Bye dad, Amy." I said, giving them all hugs, and they all gave Niall a hug too. We all said goodbye about a thousand more times and then headed out to the car. We hopped in and were both silent for awhile. I looked to Niall and he looked to me.
"So, they weren't that bad, were they?" I asked, nervous to know what he thought of my family.
"Completely the opposite. They were amazing. And it was amazing to see how you acted around them. You're really yourself when you're with them." He said, as he started driving off.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah." he said. "And you know what?"
"What?" I asked. We were stopped at a stoplight.
"I like you even more now that I've met your family." Before I could speak, he leaned in and kissed me.
