Samantha - The Second Night
We were on the top of the ridge when I told the boys to stay there. I creeped around, and didn't see the trap as I triggered it.
The girl from yesterday jumped out of her hiding place. She started conversation with me, but I didn't pay attention until she asked me,
"Why did you go over the ridge?"
Smiling evilly, because I had almost untied the knot that held the door to the cage closed, I replied, "I don't really want to tell you." Well, I said it a little different, but I escaped. She fell down and I was able to collect ten cobs of corn before she got up and I had to run.
When we got home, I started to go in, but then decided to leave the corn outside. Mom and dad wouldn't let us go if they knew we has been spotted.
And me captured.
~~~
When I looked outside for the corn, it wasn't there. Gone. Absent. Proofed out of existence. To put it simply, it had disappeared. Surprised, I just stared for a moment. Then I called my brothers, and we set off towards the village. We talked about possibilities of what happened. Sawyer thought it was the bogeyman, and Spencer and I said,
"That's just plain silly!"
We stopped to rest once, because the boys legs were hurting, and I decided to go ahead.
"Remember, if you see trouble, don't come. Hide and watch, to see what happens. If I am captured, run home after and tell mom and dad what happened." I told them, for the third time.
"We know, Samantha. It's ok, we'll be fine." Spencer answered, reassuring me.
"Alright, I'm going." I said, but when I got there, there was a sight to behold.
The girl I had been chased by was surrounded and being called a thief!
"Return our corn! Give it back! Hang her! Thief! Monster! Get her parents! She's an orphan, no manners at all!"
So many things were making me dizzy.
"Stop!" I screamed.
Everyone turned to look at me.
"She didn't steal the corn! I did!" I shouted, hoping they'd give me a fair trial.
"Was she helping you?" One man asked suspiciously.
"No. She was the one trying to stop me." I replied.
Everyone murmured to the old man who had confronted me and asked if Sophie had helped me. I know her name because that's one of the thing I heard as she was surrounded.
Finally he talked.
Five words that meant certain death.
"Your trail is at dawn."
~~~
Next morning, I got ready for the trail. When I got there, I was sat in a chained chair. Blah blah this, and blah blah that was all I heard, until they asked me to defend myself.
