Chapter Eight
"I've got it!" Cheshire and Kid Flash said at the same time, grabbing the cane. "I can't let go!" The next thing they knew, they were shooting up through the air, and with a flash of light (no pun intended) they disappeared. Superboy, Miss Martian, Aqualad, and Red Arrow just stood in shocked silence.
"What happened to the simple search, find and rescue mission for Tornado's friend?" Roy asked. "I assumed that we would come in, get that Kent Nelson guy, and get out."
"Same," Superboy agreed.
Jade and Wally sat up. "Where are we?" Jade asked.
"No idea," Wally said. The cane suddenly flew off, into the hand of an old man. On either side of him were Klarion the Witch Boy and Abracadabra. Oh, boy.
Kent glided over to the teens. "Come on, come on, in here," He urged, making an elevator appear.
"No, no, no!" Klarion howled. "I want the helmet! I want it, I want it, it want it!" He sent a bolt of red light at the elevator doors, but they closed.
"I'm Kent Nelson, by the way," The old man said.
"No doubt," Wally muttered. Jade elbowed him. "Ow!"
"I'm Jade. And Mr. Manners over here is Wally." A/N Couldn't stand to delete that scene, but Miss Manners is an Arty only thing.
"Well, Jade," Kent said with a smile that faded as he continued. "We're up against an opponent with tremendous mystic power."
"Abracadabra?" Wally scoffed. "Flash proved he uses futuristic technology to simulate magic. Guy's all show and no biz."
"Right you are," Kent said. "Abra is indeed a charlatan. But Klarion the Witch Boy, the kid with the cat, is an actual Lord of Chaos. The ultimate enemy of a Lord of Order, like Dr. Fate."
"Riiight," Wally said. "You're a Lord of Order."
"Oh no, not me. I'm just an old coat Fate used to put on. Until my wife Inza convinced me there could be more to life. Ah, she was a real pistol, that Inza. Any-who, Klarion's after the helmet. If he gets his sticky mits on it, he'll turn the planet into his own personal playground of pandemonium."
The elevator dinged and the doors opened. The three walked out. A short stairway lead to what appeared to be the interior of a bell tower. The trio walked over to the enormous brass bell. A door opened in the ceiling. Superboy, Aqualad, and Red Arrow fell through with crashes and groans. Miss Martian simply floated to the floor, landing gently.
"Friends of yours?" Kent asked as Jade ran over to them. An awful noise pierced through the air as a blue bolt of electricity was shot at Kent. They looked up to see Klarion and Abra.
"Friends of yours?" Wally asked sarcastically, pushing the old man out of the way of another bolt. The others jumped out of its path. Kent hit the bell with his cane, and he and Wally walked through it, Klarion following after them.
The rest of the team couldn't follow, and the fight with Abra did not go well. It ended with them surrounded in domes of blue electricity, crying out in pain. Roy was in the same dome as Jade, keeping his arms wrapped around her tightly. He was lying on top of her, trying to keep as much of the painful energy away from her as possible. Jade was grateful, but it still hurt. She couldn't imagine how bad it was for him. For the others it most have been horrible, too, but Roy had literally just put himself closer to the danger by blocking his girlfriend from it. They both knew that he wouldn't be able to last for much longer.
Just as Abra was about to shoot another bolt at the six teens, a glowing symbol appeared behind him, and he ,for some reason, was left in nothing but his underwear. The domes disappeared and the group rose to their feet. 'I so did not need to see that," Jade thought, looking away.
"Show's over," Superboy said, and decked him, efficiently knocking him out.
-------A FEW HOURS LATER------ (Time skip sponsored by Spongebob Squarepants.)
Wally sat the Helmet of Fate on his souvenir self and stepped back, admiring it. He heard someone, obviously one of the girls, clear her throat. He turned around to see Jade standing there. "You never told us what happened to you when you put on the helmet," She said.
"Energy from the thing rewrote my brain's data waves. I was bioscripted into becoming Dr. Fate for a few minutes. No big." Wally answered.
"Wait," Jade said. "You're still claiming there's no such thing as magic?" She laughed, and then her face hardened. "If that's how you feel, then why keep the helmet at all?"
"Souvenir."
"Geek!" Jade exclaimed, exasperated. She started to walk off, but Wally stopped her.
"Hey, Jade?'
"What is it?"
"Can I talk to you?"
"Sure. About what?'
"Kent said something to me. I feel like I should tell you about it."
"Ok. Shoot."
"Remember how Mr. Nelson was talking to us about his wife? He said to me that that she was a spitfire. He told me that I needed to find a spitfire for myself. One that wouldn't let me get away with nothin'."
"Cool," Jade said. "But why are you talking to me about this?" She sounded annoyed at him, but she was thinking about her little sister. 'God, that Artemis was always such a little spitfire.' Jade couldn't help but think.
"Well, I don't really know any girls. Just you and Megan, really. And Megan is no spitfire. You are, but I don't like you like that, and the feeling is mutual. Besides, you have Roy. How do I know when I find my spitfire? Sorry, I know this is kinda stupid."
Jade smiled at him. "Nah. It's fine, man. And, I can't really answer your question. Roy and I pretty much hit it of the second that we met, but I don't know what it'll be like it for you. But, I can tell you this: when you find a girl, if it's meant to be, it'll be. If you think that you've found the one, you'll be able to tell if she feels the same way by the way she looks at you. She'll probably avoid trying to do that, so you won't be able to see the ways her eyes sparkle when she looks at you, the pinkness of her cheeks when she blushes. When you find the girl that you're truly meant to be with, you will be with her. Remember that."
Wally smiled at her. "Ok. Thanks, Jade. I owe you."
"You're my friend, Kid Idiot. I didn't expect anything in return, but if you say so..."
"Ok, ok! Jeez! I take it back!"
Jade grinned devilishly at him. "No backsies," She said cheerfully, and left the room to go find a certain Roy Harper.
