4. Dread

Feeling a light tap on his shoulder, he blinked his eyes open. The first thing he saw was the glass of vodka that had been pushed in front of him and the second was the seductive smile of the bar tender who leaned towards him from the other side of the counter.

"Busy day?" She asked, her smile never faltering.

"Something like that." He said, pinching the bridge of his nose. He hated being disturbed. "What's this? I didn't order a drink."

"Don't worry, it's on the house." The bartender replied, with another flirty smile. "Oh, and I knock off at 8.30."

He raised his eyebrows in confusion as he watched her saunter off to serve other customers. Well, that was odd. Looking down at the glass of vodka in front of him, he noticed she had placed it on a napkin. As he slowly raised the glass to his lips, he took note of the scribbling on the napkin. Her name and address.

Letting out a sigh, he downed the contents of the glass in one go before standing up and walking off to the bathroom. It was exactly the most sanitary situation but it wasn't like he could wait until he got to his own place.

Getting into one of the empty stalls, he emptied out the contents of his stomach. After over a minute of nonstop vomiting his stomach was finally settled. Rising slowly, he went over to the sink and washed his face. As he observed his reflection on the mirror, he saw sea green eyes and fiery red hair neatly combed into a man bun. He was presentable. No one would be able to tell he had just been sick in the bathroom.

Satisfied with his appearance he left the bathroom and headed towards the building's exit.

The first thing he saw was the bartender waiting by the door. As she saw him, she gave him a sunny smile.

"There you are. I was wondering where you had run off to."

"Surely you weren't waiting out here for me." He replied, a hint of annoyance in his tone.

"Well... I had nothing better to do. You look like a fun hottie." She replied with a giggle.

He merely gave her a plain look as he began to walk away.

"Go home, little girl. I'm sure you have someone waiting for you." He said without so much as looking at her.

She was persistent as she ran up to him.

"Oh? Playing hard to get, I see. You know most men wouldn't pass up the opportunity." She insisted.

"Then go to those men." He replied dryly.

"Why are you so stiff. Relax a little. We live in shitty times. You could die tomorrow. Live in the moment." She said as she twirled around.

He suddenly stopped. He wasn't focusing on her anymore but rather something else had caught his attention. He stood by the door to one lounge and they seemed to have the radio on the news channel. As he listened to that particular night's broadcast he heard the familiar voice of Prime Minister Cody Norman.

I can assure you, Eden is the safest you can get. And the most luxurious. That's why we named it Eden. Sure, I get your concerns but this Fort is impenetrable. I mean, we really didn't need to make it as fortified as we did. Our military leaders keep telling us all this bullshit about how the undead demonstrate degrees of intelligence. Why haven't they ever attacked our Forts then? All I see is mindless creatures driven by their hunger and yet they're dumb enough to not even attack the Forts who house the highest concentration of the human population.

"The Prime Minister does give a good point." The bartender chirped in with a smile. "You can never get any safer than Eden."

"What did you say your name was again?" He asked, his eyes piercing through hers.

"Kristi," she replied with a million dollar smile.

"Really?" He smiled at her, a strange look passing through his face.

The next thing she knew he had her pinned to the wall behind her.

"I suppose I'll give you what you want." He said with a smirk as he crooked a finger under her chin and raised it so she was looking straight into his eyes.

It was then she noticed they weren't out in the streets anymore. That was strange, she didn't recall how they ended up here. Where were they anyhow? She could tell they were inside some apartment.

Seeing here eyes wander around in curiosity and a bit of confusion, he grasped her chin and forced her to focus on just him.

"Eyes on me, princess." He said to her, his voice sending goosebumps down her spine.

He brought his lips down to hers in a chaste kiss that left her wanting more. Seeing her reaction, he smirked as he began to kiss a trail down her neck.

Her heartbeat was erratic as she closed her eyes and let out a soft sigh. This little encounter was proving to be everything she had imagined and much more. Weaving her fingers into his hair she brought him even closer. She wanted the moment to last for as long as possible and savor every second of it.

Until she felt a sharp pain as he sank his teeth into her neck. Crying out in pain, she tried to push him away but he merely pinned her hands above her head.

"What's the matter? You want me, don't you? Now you're going to get me." He said as he smiled menacingly at her.

Feeling him grip her hands tigher, she felt them snap from the pressure. Her cries did not stop as he still didn't release her.

"You know, I really wasn't going to eat you but you just had to open your mouth and yap about things you barely understand." He continued, his expression cold and unfeeling. "I suppose I'm petty like that. But don't worry, once I'm done with you, I'll be even more petty just to prove a point. It's too bad you won't be here to see it."
