Reverend Eric DuWright pastor of Greenleaf Baptist church has just been arrested for drug trafficking along with Sean Williams, Antonio Gates, Omar Jackson, and Lorenzo Jones. For 10 years these five men have been selling drugs from out of the church and recruiting youth to distribute the substances on the streets. They are all being held without bail awaiting trial.

1985

Branchville,GA

I tapped my fingers on the arm of my chair as the head deacon read a brief summary of my life and education history. I've just graduated from seminary school this summer after having to do an extra year because of remedial classes. I flash a smirk at my mother who's sitting in the front pew along with my father, three siblings and my wife and 3 month old son. I sighed as he came to a close and was about to present me to the church as their new pastor.

"Greenleaf Baptist Church it is my pleasure to welcome your new pastor Reverend Eric DuWright."

The sanctuary erupted into applause as I slowly stood to my feet straightening out my red and black clergy robe. I walked up to the podium looking at all the members and guest standing, clapping waiting for my next move. I cleared my voice and began to speak.

"Mmm", I hummed shaking my head smiling, "God is good isn't he."

The congregation replied with amens and yes he is. I licked my lips and parted my lips to continue my little speech.

"What a blessed morning it is this morning. I'm happy to be here in the house of the lord this morning and even happier to be your new pastor."

I flashed my smiled to the crowd as my eyes found their way to my beautiful wife. I remember the first time I laid eyes on her. Back in 72' she walked into choir practice looking fine as ever. She sat by me and introduced herself.
"Hi I'm Shardae, Shardae Milan." She smiled showing her pearly whites

"Shardae huh?" I licked my lips and looked her up and down

"Yea Shardae. It means powerful, intelligent, pretty, and friend."

"That's cute." I complimented her
She blushed, "thank you."

"Mmhmm." I hummed

"What's your name?"

"I'm Eric." I smirked

"Well, Eric," she started, "do you have a last name?"

"Yea I do." I said as I sat back in the pew

She held her hand out looking around the room then looking back at me, "what!"

I chuckled, "don't worry about all that now, just know you gonna have it later on in life."

She scuffed, "boy please," she began to laugh.

"Mmhmm just watch."

From that day on we could never be separated. I finished my little speech before preaching a short sermon.

Service ended and we all headed to the fellowship hall to eat and for the meet and greet. I caught up with my family as they hugged me and congratulated me for the hundredth time this month.

My mother walked up to me before hugging me, "I'm so proud of you baby, you've came a long way from where you are now", she looked me in the eyes smiling before planting a kiss on my cheek rubbing my shoulders.

"Thanks ma." I smiled

"I'm so glad you listened to the Lord and left that old lifestyle alone and became a servant for the Lord." She expressed with happiness, tears of joy running down her cheeks.

"Don't cry momma," I say as I wipe her tears with my handkerchief.

"Oh baby," she shook her head, "I prayed day and night that the Lord would save you and he did that and much more." She began to cry more

My father walked up and hugged her, "oh Katie." He looked at me and chuckled

"You know how emotional your mother gets when she sees one of you accomplish something." He smiled looking down at her rubbing her shoulder.

"But I'm proud of you son, you've come a long way. I thought we had lost you but the good Lord brought you back."

"Thanks pop." I smiled

My pops has always been hard on me, but when I started slangin rock he got even harder on me. I wasn't always saved, there was a time in my past where I went off on the wrong path and it almost cost me my life. Had my car burnt up, I got shot twice, and a whole lotta other stuff. But, I thank God for my parents who never gave up on me. They kept praying for me even though it seemed like I wouldn't turn from that life. But, I did and I thank God for his mercy. My wife walked over to me smiling with our son in hand.

"Hey baby," she said to me as she kissed my cheeks, "I'm so proud of you."

"You and everybody else," I replied with a soft chuckle.

She playfully hit my shoulder, "shut up," she laughed, "But on a serious note baby I'm so proud of you.

She handed me our son, "Hey lil man." I said as I kissed his cheek.

"Oh what a cute little baby." One of the older members walked over to us

"Oh yes he is." Another older woman added in

"What's his name?" One of them asked

"Caine." I answered smiling down at my son

"Oh what a sweet name for a cute lil baby." She pinched his cheeks

"Now I hope you can keep your word and remain a man of God. And don't let that past creep up on you."

At this point I blocked out her voice and looked around the room. I wondered how many other people knew about my past and if they were just waiting to see me fall. Honestly the past me was waiting for me to fall. I gotta prove that I am a changed man not only to them but to me too.

They made faces of disgust before straightening up, "Oh, um interesting." They commented before walking away

My wife looked at over at me. "What was all that for?" My wife asked in confusion snapping me out of my thoughts

"I have no idea." I said chuckling

My son began to whine and squirm in my arms as his feeding time approached. I handed him off to my wife just as the head decon made his way over to me.

"Reverend DuWright", the decon extended his hand, "It's a pleasure to have you as our pastor." He smiled

I shook his hand, "Likewise my brother. What's your name again, I'm not too good with names?"

"Sean Williams, the head deacon." He smiled showing his pearly whites
