Third Person POV

"Woah, woah, woah!" Perth protested when Tae his physical therapist gave Saint a bear hug.

"Sorry," Tae said, moving away quickly from Saint with a sheepish smile.

Just at that moment Perth's phone started to ring. Saint picked it up from the coffee table and handed it to Perth.

"It's your father," he said.

Perth's heart skipped a beat. What does my father want from me at this time, Perth thought, an uneasy feeling creeping into his being.

"How are you doing, son?" Perth's dad said before Perth could say hello.

"I'm in the middle of my physical therapy," Perth informed him.

"When do you expect to return to your normal level of functioning?" he asked. Did Perth just detect a hint of impatience in his dad's voice or was it just his imagination.

"It's hard to tell right now," Perth replied carefully. "My muscle training has just started. Perhaps I will be able to tell you after a week or two."

There was a pause in the conversation, then Perth's dad resumed it by asking, "How is Saint doing?"

"He's doing fine," Perth replied, starting to wonder what this call was really all about and where this conversation was heading.

"Has Amanda been in touch with you?" my dad asked.

For some reason a strong sense of fear and worry gripped Perth's chest.

"Why do you ask?" as if Perth really wanted to know.

"I was just wondering," he heard his dad make an uncomfortable chuckle, or was it a guilty chuckle.

Then after another awkward pause, his dad blurted out. "Amanda's dad might give you a friendly call, you know, just to ask how you're doing because he knows that you have been in a car accident."

"I would rather that he didn't," Perth said quickly.

"Don't be a brat," Perth's dad scolded him. "Be nice and polite to him when he calls you."

"Yes, dad," Perth said in resignation.

"What did your dad want?" Saint asked after Perth's dad ended the call.

"He asked me how I was progressing with my physical therapy and I informed him that I had just started so there was nothing to tell," Perth replied.

"You're young and healthy," Saint smiled at Perth, "I am confident that you will recover from your injuries quickly."

"I hope so," Perth said with a sigh.

Suddenly Perth's phone rang again.

"Shit," Perth said under his breath when he saw whose name was on his screen.

Perth made a grimace before swiping his screen.

"Good afternoon, sir," Perth said politely to Amanda's dad.

"Oh come on, son, you don't have to address me as 'sir' you know that," Amanda's dad said in an over friendly tone. "Just address me as 'dad', it sounds so much better to me."

For some reason, Perth could not bring himself to address Amanda's dad as 'dad'.

"What can I do for you, sir?" Perth asked politely.

"Dad," Amanda's dad corrected him.

When Perth kept silent, Amanda's dad said, "I have invited your parents to Amanda's birthday party next week. I thought it would be a pleasant birthday surprise for Amanda if you showed up at her birthday party with your parents."

"I'm afraid I won't be able to do that," Perth said quickly. "Today was just my first day of physical therapy. I still have a long way to go before I can walk on my injured leg again."

"Are you saying that one week is not long enough for you to be back on your feet again?" Amanda's father's voice sounded very disappointed.

"I'm afraid so," Perth said very firmly.

But Amanda's father was not one to be discouraged easily.

"Don't worry, Perth," he said, "I will find a way to have you transported here when the time comes."

Then before Perth could say anything his phone went back to his home screen. Amanda's dad had hung up without a good bye.
