Chapter 5

Marley sits in the chair behind her dad's desk in his office in the locker room. She has to wait for practice to end every day to go home. Her dad's her ride home. She's watching Netflix on his computer to occupy her. And texting Hunter even though he's practicing and can't reply. She likes the thought of him finally getting on his phone and seeing her name on the home screen a dozen times.

The door to the locker room opens. She can smell the sweat and testosterone of the players before she can see them. Hunter walks by the glass window separating the office from the locker room. He winks at Marley. She wants to run up to him and kiss him. She knows she can't.

Coach Dickson walks into his office. He smiles at his daughter behind his desk.

"Hey, angel," he says. He kisses the top of her head. "What've you been up to?"

"Studying," she says.

Netflix is still pulled up on the computer screen. "Studying anatomy, I see." She's watching Grey's Anatomy.

"Of course."

In the locker room, Hunter sits on a bench, taking off his cleats. Wesley and Landon stand at lockers in front of him. Hunter takes his phone out of his locker and smiles when he presses the home button, the screen lighting up with notifications from Marley texting him and messaging him on every social media.

"I'm coming over," Wesley tells Landon. He and Rae practically live at the Harpers' house. Landon and Sabina's parents are hardly ever home. They travel a lot for business. Landon and Sabina don't fully understand what their parents do. They just know that they're never home. Rae hates her house and basically only sleeps there. Sometimes she doesn't even sleep there. She goes to the Harpers', even if she's fighting with Landon. Wesley hates his dad, and his house is too crowded. Six kids and two parents were not meant to fit in a three bedroom, two bathroom house. He'll go to the Harpers' to play video games, even if Landon's with Rae and can't hang out with him. He's even brought girlfriends over to the Harpers' house. He and Lilly would sit on the couch in the living room and make out until Landon came and crashed the party.

"I'm going to be with Rae," Landon says, knowing it doesn't make a difference to Wesley and that he will still come over. "I've got to figure out what I did wrong and make it better."

Wesley is happy that they're fighting, as much as he loves them. He'll be able to try to find a way to spend time with Sabina now. Landon and Rae will be way too busy with each other to notice that he's spending time with Sabina rather than the PlayStation.

"Maybe I'll bring Lilly over," he jokes, earning a disgusted groan from Hunter and Landon. Landon's protective over Sabina. Wesley is actually afraid of what Landon will do when he finds out that Wesley kissed his sister.

"I wish I could see my girl outside of school, even if it was just to fight," Hunter says, tossing his cleats into his open locker in frustration.

"Has she ever given you a solid reason why you can't tell Coach?" Wesley asks.

"Coach doesn't seem like the type to really care," Landon adds.

"Apparently he is. No boys, especially no football players."

Wesley laughs. "Dude, that's every dad in this town."

"Rae's dad still doesn't like me, and it's been four years. That's just a dad thing, not a Coach thing," Landon says.

"So... what?" Hunter asks. "Y'all think she's just fucking with me?"

"Maybe the whole secret thing turns her on," Wesley suggests. "Daddy's little angel is in for the thrill."

Hunter considers it. She has never given him a solid answer on the exact reason they can't tell her dad. It's always just been that he'll freak out or that he says no boys. Maybe it is just that she doesn't want to tell him...

No, he decides. Marley wouldn't do that. Not to him. He refuses to believe that.

Hunter pulls his shirt on over his head and stands up. "I'll see y'all later."

He starts walking out of the locker room. He passes the window separating the room from Coach Dickson's office. Marley's sitting in there. She smiles at him as he walks by. He gets so distracted by that that he almost doesn't hear Coach Dickson say his name.

"Vargas!" Coach Dickson says. It takes Hunter a few seconds to snap back into reality and turn to look at his coach.

"Yeah, Coach?"

He motions for him to come into his office. Hunter goes into the office and stands behind one of the chairs on the opposite side of the desk. Marley's sitting behind the desk. She's smirking at him. He's trying not to look at her because then he'll end up smiling like an idiot. If he looks at her, Coach will see how he looks at her, and he looks at her like he's in love with her. Mainly because he is. It's just really obvious when he looks at her, so he can't look at her when Coach is around.

"A couple scouts are coming on Friday to watch you," Coach Dickson says. "I'll be pushing you a little harder at practice this week because I want you to look good for them. Just wanted you to know in advance so you don't think I hate you this week or anything."

Hunter nods. "Thank you, sir."

A scholarship is the only way he's getting out of Ruby. His parents' little Mexican restaurant barely makes enough to keep the house. There's no way he can go to college without a scholarship. That's basically how it is for everyone in Ruby. It's hard to leave.

"Have a nice night," Coach Dickson says, his way of telling Hunter to get out of his office.

Hunter leaves the office and exits the locker room. He gets about halfway to the parking lot before someone grabs his hand from behind him. It's Marley.

He smiles at her. "Hey, mi alma."

She smiles back. She kisses him.
