Chapter 2
Marley Dickson's back is against the wall. She can barely breathe. She and Hunter Vargas are squeezed into a tiny crevice between a wall and a water fountain. There's not enough room for both of them. Neither of them know how they're able to fit, but they do. This is one of the few spots at school they can go to make out. Coach Dickson has eyes all over the school in the form of teachers and staff. Somebody would die if he caught Marley and Hunter- one of them or he himself after suffering a heart attack. His perfect little angel with her tongue down the throat of one of his problematic players.
This water fountain is in the back of the school by the toolshed. Nobody ever goes back there unless they're hooking up or smoking weed. Those are the only reasons teachers go back there, too.
The water fountain, under the bleachers, and in the announcing box are the only safe places for them at school.
"I'm so excited for tonight," Hunter says.
"For the afterparty?" Marley asks. There's always an afterparty after the games. It alternates between the football players' houses. Their parents know about them and will just conveniently go out late that night and leave loads of alcohol out. Nobody cares enough to stop them. The party is at Landon Harper's house tonight. Landon Harper hosts more parties than anyone else. His parents are never home.
"I went all week without being able to see you," he says. "I get to spend all night with you, mi alma."
She smiles as he kisses her cheek. It's been almost five months and she still gets butterflies in her stomach around him. "If you play really well tonight, I may have a special surprise for you."
"Oh, really?"
"Maybe."
They start kissing again. They tend to kiss a lot when they're together. They're not together very often, so it's pretty much all they do. They can talk through text and stuff. They can't kiss through text. Except for the Emoji, but that's not the same.
"I've got to get to the locker room before your dad kills me," he says. Coach Dickson is very strict. He has no tolerance for tardiness. He's got a team full of boys who want to play, so why should he play someone who doesn't want to play? That's his logic, at least.
Marley pouts. "You'll pick me up later?"
He smiles at her, gives her one last peck, and starts walking away. "Regular time and regular place. I love you, baby."
"Good luck, babe."
The Renegades win the game. Of course they do. They're pretty damn good. Everyone goes wild at the end of the game as if it wasn't obvious that they were going to win. As if they just won a championship or something other than just a regular game against a slightly above average opponent.
Almost every guy on the team has a girl making out with them as they walk off the field after the "big" win. Landon and Rae are doing a cute kissing thing that isn't making out that they always do in public because they don't see the need for PDA. Wesley and Lilly are practically having sex while standing up, apparently ignoring that they broke up a few days ago. Hunter can't help but feel disappointed. He does after every game. Marley can't support him publicly like the other guys' girls do. He can't even get a hug from her. The most they can do is lock eyes from across the field and know that they'll get the rest of the night together.
Marley's friend drives her home after the game. She goes to her room and shoves a different outfit into her purse. She waits for Hunter to text her that he's down the street. She tells her dad that she's going to Rae's house. Her dad doesn't question it. Marley and Rae have been best friends since the Dicksons moved to Ruby. Rae's family is the reason the Dicksons moved to Ruby in the first place. She walks out of the house and down the street, where Hunter waits for her in his very used car. She gets in the car. She leans across the center console and kisses his lips long and hard.
"Hello to you too," he teases once she pulls away.
Hunter drives back to his house, where his mom is cleaning dishes from his younger siblings' dinner. Her face lights up when she sees Hunter and Marley come in.
"Mis amores!" she cries, throwing her hands up and rushing towards them, giving them a kiss on each of their cheeks. "There are leftover enchiladas, rice, and beans in the fridge for you."
Hunter kisses his mom on her cheek. "Gracias, Mami."
She goes back to the sink.
"You hungry?" Hunter asks Marley, going to the fridge. She shakes her head. He makes himself a plate. They sit on the couch with the TV on the Game Show Network as he eats. When he finishes, he puts his plate on the coffee table. His mom comes over and grabs it.
"No, Mami. I can do it," he says, moving to stand up.
"Callate, Hunter!" She takes his plate into the kitchen and clears it. She comes back into the living room and says goodnight to her son and his girlfriend. She goes to her bedroom.
Marley nestles into the warmth of Hunter's chest as someone gives a ridiculous answer on Family Feud. Hunter wraps his arms tighter around Marley and kisses the crown of her head. He wants her to be as close to him as possible. Friday nights are their nights. He needs as much Marley as he can get.
"So," he says, trailing off. "When do I get my surprise?"
She laughs. "So you think you played really, really well?" He nods. "That's a little cocky, don't you think?"
"Did you see those passes I made?" He makes a clicking noise with his tongue. "Beautiful."
She stands up. "Come to your room in five minutes."
He waits on the couch, checking the clock every two seconds to see if it's been the five minutes yet. It's strange how time moves so slowly when someone's waiting on something. It's like the world just stops spinning in anticipation.
It's finally been five minutes. It feels like forever to him. He shuts off the TV and turns off the light in the living room.
He opens his bedroom door. Marley's sitting on his bed in a black velvet slip dress.
Hunter laughs silently to himself as he shuts the door and moves toward his bed. "I need to play really well more often."
