Chapter 19
"Please?" Wesley begs, drawing out the word for as long as his breath allows him to.
"I really don't want to," Sabina says. She leans back against the wall in the school hallway. Wesley pouts.
Wesley pecks her on the lips. "Please?" He kisses her again. "Please?" He kisses her again. "Pretty please?" He kisses her again. "Pretty please with a cherry on top?"
She smiles but quickly withdraws it, not wanting to look like she's giving in to him. "I don't even have a costume."
It's Halloween and, despite Coach Dickson repeatedly telling his team not to since it's a Thursday and tomorrow is a big game, the Renegades are having their annual Halloween party at Jordy Bell's house by the woods on the outskirts of town. It's always the biggest party of the year with ninety-nine percent of the high school coming and a haunted woods style thing set up in the woods around the house. The tradition goes all the way back to when Jordy's dad was a Renegade. All the Bell boys since then have thrown it. Wesley wants to go, but he only wants to go with Sabina. Sabina wants to carry out her own Halloween tradition and watch scary movies by herself in her living room with a pizza, a two liter bottle of root beer, and her fuzziest blanket.
"You own clothes," Wesley says. "Just throw something together."
"Wes..."
"Why don't you wear one of your plaid skirts and be a sexy school girl?" he suggests. "I can be your nerdy boyfriend."
She sighs. "I don't have anything... I'm not sexy."
He shakes his head and kisses her. "I disagree." He kisses her cheek before starting to walk away. "I'll pick you up at eight, Bean."
He picks her up at eight. She's wearing her plaid skirt and a long sleeved crop top. He's wearing a white collared shirt tucked into khaki pants with a clip on bow tie, suspenders, and big glasses. Landon dresses as Danny in black jeans and a leather jacket and Rae dresses as Sandy in black leggings and a black crop top from Grease. Marley and Hunter show up to the party in overalls and flannels.
Rae and Landon quickly find a bowl of candy and a couch and sit down to start eating. They somehow look happier now than they ever have before. It's like getting through their fight made them realize they can do anything. It's almost like reassurance that they're meant to be together forever.
Jordy Bell walks into his house from the backyard and pauses the music blaring through his speakers. He stands up on a coffee table and announces, "The haunted woods are now open!" People cheer as he hops down and starts the music back up.
"Let's go," Hunter says to Marley. She shakes her head. "Come on, baby. It'll be fun."
She shakes her head again. "You know I hate things jumping out at me."
He smirks, grabs her hand, and starts pulling her towards the back door. "That's exactly why it'll be fun."
Hunter leads Marley to the woods, where almost immediately a little girl in a ripped, dirtied dress pops out. Her face is painted to look like something out of The Shining. She smiles with her mouth closed at them and tilts her head way to the side. Then she screams until they move along. Marley screams back at the very beginning, clenching on to Hunter's arm. Hunter knows the girl is Jordy's little sister, which makes it even funnier for him.
They keep walking down the semi-cleared path with random figures and characters jumping out at them. Hunter keeps expecting Marley to expect the scares and not be affected by them, but she never does. She jumps every time, clinging tighter and tighter to Hunter to the point that he's starting to lose feeling in his arm from lack of blood flow and he's practically carrying her.
At the end of the path, Jordy himself pops out with a chainsaw that has the chain removed and chases them back to his backyard.
Marley lets go of Hunter's arm as soon as she can see the house again and crosses her arms over her chest. "That was not fun."
"Really? I had a great time watching you almost have a heart attack every time there was even the slightest movement around us," Hunter teases. "I think you even jumped when you saw your own hand."
She shoves him, but he doesn't even move. "I really don't like you right now."
He smiles and wraps his arms around her. "Oh, c'mon, mi alma. I just wanted wanted to feel like I was protecting you."
"I wouldn't have needed protection if you didn't force me into woods with creepy people," she huffs.
"You know you love me," he says, kissing her cheek.
She rolls her eyes at him. "You're lucky you're cute."
Back inside the house, Lilly Xavier is scowling at Wesley and Sabina from across the room. Sabina's standing with her back against the wall. Wesley's standing very closely in front of her. He's got one hand intertwined with hers and the other on her waist. He's just smiling at her like whatever she's saying is the most incredible thing he's ever heard. He keeps sneaking kisses on her forehead, nose, cheek, and lips.
"God, this is just so embarrassing," Lilly scoffs.
Kassidy Conrad nods feverishly next to her. "But don't feel too humiliated. Clearly he's not in his right mind. No sane person would dump you for Bean."
"I meant for him!" Lilly shrieks. "It's embarrassing for him!"
She's also embarrassed for herself. All she and Wesley did was make out at parties. Now he's here acting like a real boyfriend to Sabina as if Sabina has anything Lilly doesn't. More so, of course, she's embarrassed for Wesley. What a fall from grace to be dating cheerleaders one day to dating the freak the next. Lilly knows everyone else is thinking the same thing, too.
Wesley walks away from Sabina, and Lilly, Kassidy, and the other girls standing with them instinctively know to walk over to her. They form a little circle around Sabina, her back still pressed against the wall.
"You got Wesley to dress up as a freak like you," Kassidy says. "How cute!"
Sabina looks at the group of girls, all wearing their cheerleading uniforms as their costumes. "And you all came as yourselves. I mean, it's kind of the perfect Halloween costume. It's that perfect mix of slutty, scary, and disgusting."
Lilly rolls her eyes. "I came over here to be nice, and that's how you're going to treat me?"
Sabina snorts. "I'm so sorry!"
"Whatever," Lilly says. "I just can't wait to see Wesley get tired of fucking you and dump you."
"Oh, like he did to you?" Sabina asks.
Lilly's jaw tenses. "Listen, you little freak! You need to remember where you belong, and that's on the bottom. Nothing, not even dating Wesley, will ever change that."
Sabina just shrugs. "Okay." She walks closer to Lilly and gets close to her ear. "But Wes likes it when I'm on top." Lilly's jaw drops, and Sabina walks away.
Wesley reappears with a can of Coke in his hand. "What'd you do, Lilly? Where is she?"
Lilly shrugs. "I just reminded her that she's totally embarrassing herself by thinking you're actually into her and that you belong with girls more like, well, me." She places her hand on his arm. "So why don't you just stop embarrassing yourself already?"
Wesley just chuckles and swats Lilly's hand away. "The only reason I was ever with you was because I was in love with her and tired of seeing you pick on her. I thought I could get you to stop. Once I realized you were too much of a heartless bitch for that, I got the girl I actually wanted."
He walks away, leaving the group of cheerleaders dressed as cheerleaders dumbfounded as he searches the house for Sabina. He eventually finds her on the front porch, sitting on a bench next to the door. He sits down next to her.
"What'd she say to you? Are you okay?" he asks.
She laughs. "I don't know if you know this, but she's the least mean 'mean girl' in history. I'm fine. I just was getting hot in there."
Wesley bites down on his lip. "You're still really hot out here." Sabina elbows him. "Do you want to go back to your house? We still have time to watch a scary movie under your blanket."
When they get back to their Harpers' house, they go up to Sabina's room to get a blanket. However, they don't get a blanket. Instead, Wesley takes his fake glasses off as Sabina unclips his bow tie, and they press their lips together. She undoes his suspenders, and he pulls his lips away for the first time to pull his shirt off. Sabina lays down on her bed, and Wesley crawls on top of bed, reconnecting their lips.
As he starts kissing her chest and her neck, Sabina starts giggling.
"What?" he says, smiling against her skin.
"That tickles."
"Oh really? How about this?" he asks before moving his hands to her stomach and starting to tickle her. He sits up as her body begins convulsing with that mixture of pain and laughter. He keeps tickling her until she begs him to stop, and then he drops back down to the bed, pulling her down on top of him.
She sits up and pulls her shirt off over her head with all the tugging and contortions and facial expressions that come with removing a tight shirt. Wesley just watches her with the biggest smile on his face, looking at her like she's the most beautiful thing he's ever seen even as she struggles to take off a shirt.
"Remember earlier today when you said you weren't sexy?" he asks. She nods. "That was by far the sexiest thing I've ever seen."
"Shut up!"
He pulls her back down to him. "It's true."
They start kissing again, getting completely lost in each other all over again. They don't even notice when the bedroom door flings open and Landon walks in to see his sister in just her bra and skirt on his shirtless best friend, who is grabbing his sister's butt.
"Hey, Sabina, do you want to watch... Oh my God!" Landon screams. "Oh my God!"
"What the hell, Landon!" Sabina yells back.
"Oh my God!" is all Landon seems capable of saying.
"Ever heard of knocking?" Sabina asks.
Landon just shuts the door and goes back downstairs, still muttering "Oh my God" to himself over and over again, to meet Rae in the living room.
"What happened to you?" Rae asks.
"I don't want to talk about it... or think about it... ever."
