Chapter 16
There's a substitute in third period economics on Friday. She is supposed to assign something left in instructions by Mr. Blanton, but the college-aged girl is wooed easily by one of the Renegades. She's so flattered by his attention that she decides not to give out the assignment. Due to the lack of work, the students in the class have either left or are doing whatever they want in the classroom.
Wesley and Sabina are among the latter. She moves from her seat near the front of the room to the desk next to him in the back row. He slides his desk over so the edge is lined up with hers. Morgan Kelley always has a deck of Uno cards in her backpack, but since she left class to find her boyfriend, she let Sabina and Wesley have it.
Everyone left in the room keeps looking back at them, wondering what's going on. They're just playing Uno and talking quietly. It's very un-Wesley-Parker-ish. Usually his relationships consist of making out at school and going further after school. Everyone's starting to wonder if he really does actually like her. It's quite the scandal.
"What're your plans for after the game?" Sabina asks, placing a yellow six down.
"It's Easton and Cece's four month anniversary, so I'm dropping them off for dinner and then going home to babysit the other ones," Wesley says, smiling as he plays a yellow skip. His mom's a nurse and has the night shift. His dad's always working. Easton usually babysits, but he asked Wesley to so he could do something special for Cece. Wesley smirks at Sabina. "Looks like you're stuck spending an entire night without me. What're you going to do?"
She rolls her eyes. "Or I could babysit with you."
"I'm not sure I'm ready to expose you to that chaos."
"I think it'd fun."
"You really want to?" he asks, and she nods her head. "You can't say I didn't warn you about the chaos."
The Renegades win again. They usually don't beat the team they beat tonight, so everyone's extra excited about the win.
Wesley, Hunter, and Landon walk out of the locker room together. The joy Landon felt over the victory diminishes when he sees that Rae isn't waiting for him at his car. She's the only person he wants to celebrate with.
"Hunter, I'll see you at the party," Landon says. He wasn't planning on going. Now he feels like getting drunk and forgetting the world.
Wesley's joy over the win only increases when he sees Sabina leaning against the driver's side door of his truck. Trying to hide it as best as he can from Landon, Wesley presses himself against her and kisses her. The kiss lasts a long time.
"Damn, Wesley. Get some!" someone in a group of Renegades shouts.
"Getting a little freaky with the freak tonight!" someone else in the group says. Wesley just takes his right hand off her waist and uses it to flick them off, still kissing her as he does it. Sabina smiles under his kisses, loving that he's still so publicly being affectionate despite the taunts of his teammates. It takes away nearly all her worries about being with him.
They finally pull away and see Cece standing near the hood of the truck. She looks a little embarrassed having walked in on them in a way.
"Easton's getting all dolled up for you, but he should be done soon," Wesley says.
They get into Wesley's truck and wait just a few more minutes for Easton to come rushing over. He practically jumps into the back seat, sliding into the middle to be next to Cece and kissing her cheek repeatedly. They drive to Hunter's family's restaurant, where Easton and Cece get out of the truck. Wesley calls Easton over to his window to ask if he needs money for anything. Easton says he's been saving up money from mowing lawns. Wesley asks if Easton needs protection. Easton tells him to fuck off. Wesley drives to his house.
"Again, I'm warning you in advance about whatever you might see and/or hear," Wesley says as he puts his key in the front door, unlocks it, opens it, and steps inside his house with Sabina in tow.
The first thing they see is Wesley's brother Cody on the couch with a girl, making out like it's nobody's business. Wesley groans as he walks up behind the couch and slaps the back of his brother's head.
"Dude!" Cody growls.
"First, you were supposed to be watching the others until I got home. Second, you're thirteen. What the hell are you doing? Third, if you're going to do this, do it in your own goddam bed instead of on mine," Wesley rants, internally rolling his eyes at himself for sounding like such a dad.
Cody pushes the girl up off the couch and stands up. He's way taller than Wesley was when he was thirteen. He's stronger too. Everyone's already agreed that he's going to be better at football than Wesley but not as good as Easton. He's a way bigger pain in the ass than Wesley was when he was thirteen, too. Cody leaves the living room, opening a door down the hallway and entering his bedroom with the girl instead.
Wesley and Sabina hear a small crash come from the back of the house, followed by a wail.
"Shit," Wesley grumbles, storming towards where the sound came from. He opens the door to his two youngest brothers' room. He finds his little sister, Paige, on the floor crying. Devon and Vince hover over her, her favorite stuffed dog in Devon's hands, laughing. "What's going on here?"
Devon drops the dog at the sound of Wesley's voice. He can feel his anger.
"I just wanted to play!" Paige cries. "And Devon stole Renny and Vince pushed me!" Renny is her stuffed dog. Wesley bends down, picks up Renny, and picks up his baby sister in one swift motion.
"Say you're sorry," Wesley hisses at the younger boys. They both do as he says, and he leaves the room, taking Paige with him into the kitchen. Sabina's still standing there, not really knowing what to do. Wesley puts Paige down on the kitchen counter and drops Renny into her lap. "I know it's almost your bed time, but how about some ice cream? Mom will never have to know."
Paige rubs her eyes with her fists and nods her head. Wesley goes to the freezer and pulls out a gallon tub of rocky road ice cream. He grabs three spoons from the drawer and puts it all on the counter next to Paige, handing her one of the spoons.
"Don't eat too much or else I'll never be able to get you to bed, and then we'll both be in trouble when Mom gets home," he tells the little girl. She nods her head, eating a small spoonful of ice cream. He looks over his shoulder at Sabina, still standing in the same place. "Are you going to stand there awkwardly all night or are you going to come eat some ice cream?"
Sabina almost feels like she's intruding as she grabs the third spoon and dips it into the tub, earning a kiss on the cheek from Wesley.
Paige leans close to Wesley's ear and cups her hand over her mouth in order to whisper. "Who is that?"
Wesley looks at Sabina and smiles. "That's Sabina. She's my girlfriend."
Sabina can feel her face turning red and her whole body burning up. She knew she was pretty much Wesley's girlfriend. He just hadn't called her it yet.
"She's pretty," Paige whispers.
Wesley's still looking at Sabina, watching as she takes a bite of ice cream. "I know."
They stand around quietly eating the ice cream, only occasionally laughing when Paige misses her mouth or takes too big a bite and ends up with chocolate ice cream melting all down her chin.
"Your hair's pretty," Paige says, looking at the two braids going down Sabina's back.
Sabina smiles at her. "Do you want me to do yours?"
Paige's eyes light up, and she looks at Wesley, almost asking for permission.
"What do you need me to get you?" he asks.
"A brush and some hair ties," Sabina says. He leaves the kitchen, and she helps Paige down from the counter, telling her to go to the couch as she cleans up the ice cream.
They all meet back up at the couch, where Sabina starts gently brushing through the knots in Paige's hair and parting it down the middle so she can braid it. Wesley watches as Sabina expertly braids his baby sister's hair and as Paige's whole face lights up. She's grown up with five older brothers who all play football. She's never truly gotten to do girly things. She's never played with dolls or played dress up or gotten her hair and nails done. She's always just been dragged to football game after football game. When she's not at a game, she's having to watch one on TV at home. Wesley has never seen her smile as much as she is right now as Sabina braids her hair.
"Okay, kiddo," Wesley says once Sabina's finished. "It's bed time."
Paige pouts. "I'm not tired! And I want to play with Sabina!" She pushes out her bottom lip. Wesley looks at Sabina for back up, but she's also pouting.
"Oh, no," he says. "You two are teaming up on me now?" He starts tickling Paige's stomach. "How am I supposed to say no to you two?" Paige starts giggling wildly, squirming around on the couch. "Go pick out a board game. You get to play one game before bed."
Paige practically sprints out of the living room and down the hallway.
"So much for getting to spend time with just you," Wesley says, his turn to pout now. Sabina leans in and kisses him. They only break apart when they hear Paige shaking the box of whatever game she chose. "Go ask your brothers if they want to play." He goes back to kissing Sabina when she's out of sight. "Not Cody! Do not go in Cody's room!"
Paige comes back into the living room by herself, arms crossed over her chest and a pout on her face. "They said they're too old for Candyland." She plops herself down on the ground and opens the box, starting to set up the board.
"Lucky for you, I'm not too old for Candyland," Wesley says, sliding off the couch onto the floor. Sabina follows suit. "Dibs on being the blue dude."
Paige falls asleep on the floor about halfway through the game. Wesley scoops her up and carries her to her room, where he tucks her in.
"So you said earlier that the couch is your bed?" Sabina says, it sounding more like a question than a statement. It's been bothering her all night.
He nods. "There isn't room in the actual bedrooms for another bed, so as the oldest, I took the couch once Paige moved out of my parents' room into her own."
"Doesn't give you much privacy."
He smiles at her. "Why do you think I'm always at your house? Other than that Landon is my best friend and that you live there."
"That's why you always brought your other girls to my couch instead of yours?" Sabina teases, leaning her head on his arm.
"You're actually the first girl I've ever brought home," he confesses. She picks her head up and looks at him in confusion. "Don't really think Lilly would've been cool with eating ice cream out of the carton to make my little sister stop crying." He kisses her cheek. "Plus, I didn't really care enough for them to meet my family."
He hopes she realizes that means he cares more about her than anyone else he's ever quote-unquote dated. That he cares more about her than pretty much anyone else in general.
A key turns in the lock on the front door, and Wesley's mom steps inside the house. She's almost shocked by the quiet. The Parker house is usually loud and messy and characterized by someone crying, especially when she's not home.
"Wesley?" Mrs. Parker calls out.
"On the floor!" Wesley replies.
Mrs. Parker peeks over the back of the couch. Wesley cranes his neck to smile at her, and Sabina does too, shyly. She's known Mrs. Parker practically her whole life but always just in the context of being her son's best friend's twin sister. Now she's here as his girlfriend, and she doesn't know what he's told his mom. She may know nothing and be completely shocked to see Sabina here with her fingers intertwined with Wesley's.
Mrs. Parker smiles at them. "Nice to see you again, Sabina. I've been looking forward to seeing the girl my son can't seem to shut up about. He talks about you constantly."
Sabina's blush returns, but now it's matched, if not outdone, by Wesley's.
"It's not... I don't... Mom!" Wesley stammers.
"I've always waited for the day when I can actually embarrass you. It feels just as good as I imagined," Mrs. Parker says. "Where are the rest of the monsters?"
"Easton's still with Cece. Cody's in his room with some girl. Devon and Vince are doing who knows what in their room. Paige is sleeping."
Mrs. Parker sighs. "Guess I need to to be a cock block." She walks in the direction of Cody and Easton's room.
"So you tell your mom about me?" Sabina teases.
He rolls his eyes. "Oh shut up, Bean." Before she gets the chance to say anything else, he shuts her up with his lips.
