Chapter 14

Sabina is over aware of everyone watching her at school on Monday. Between smoothie-ing Lilly Xavier and Wesley Parker kissing her very publicly on Friday, her goal of going unseen as much as possible has miserably failed. She and Wesley holding hands in the hallway and kissing certainly isn't helping her attract less attention.

But as much as she hates everyone looking at her rather than ignoring her existence, she can't help but be happy. Being with Wesley fills her with joy and excitement and all the emotions she's suppressed since high school started, and now that they're unofficially official, she can be with him and her childlike emotions can surround her more often.

As happy as Sabina is, however, Landon is just as unhappy. It's not because Sabina and Wesley are together, though. He's somewhat come around to it, although catching them making out in the living room almost caused him to flip out again. Rae's been ignoring him since Friday. They didn't see each other at all over the weekend, and she hasn't replied to any of his texts. She even had Marley give her a ride to school this morning instead of him. She texted Sabina to let her know rather than texting Landon. Landon's almost positive it's the longest they've gone without speaking since they started dating. It's not like them to not talk, no matter how angry they are at each other. Landon doesn't even think they're mad at each other over anything either. He truly doesn't know what's going on.

"So she's just not talking to you and you don't know why?" Wesley asks Landon in the locker room before practice. Landon nods. "Does Sabina know anything?"

Everyone else in the locker room is confused by their interaction. Last time they'd seen them together, Landon and Wesley had been having to be pulled apart to keep them from breaking each other. Now they're talking like normal. It's weird.

"If she does, she hasn't said anything," Landon replies.

"Want me to try to find out?"

Landon winces at the offer. He doesn't want to kill Wesley anymore, but the thought of him and Sabina still makes him extremely uncomfortable. The image of them making out on the couch will forever be seared into his mind. "Please shut up."

"I mean, Rae tells Sabina everything, and Sabina might not want to tell you, but I can get her to tell me."

Landon winces again. He might do it every time Wesley says Sabina's name now. "Seriously, please shut up. It's still way too weird for me."

Wesley puts his hands up in surrender. "Sorry, dude. I'm just trying to help."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever," Landon mutters. "I'll figure it out somehow."

Jasper Nugent leans against the locker next to Wesley's, looking over his shoulder at some of the other Renegades before looking back at Wesley and smirking. "Hey, Wes. Is Bean as much of a freak in the sheets as she is on the streets?"

Wesley shuts his locker and sits down on the bench in the middle of the aisle to tie his cleats. "Go back to screwing your cousin and leave Sabina's name out of your mouth."

The other guys watching laugh as Wesley refers to the time Jasper hooked up with a girl at a party just to find out she was his second cousin. Landon groans and hits his head softly against his locker over the fact that his sister is now the subject of locker room talk. Jasper accepts his defeat and walks back to his own locker.

"But seriously, Rae'll probably come over after practice today and y'all will do your weird talking thing and be fine by dinner time," Wesley says. "She probably just got grounded or something."

"I hope," Landon grumbles as he sits down next to Wesley on the bench to tie his own cleats.

Hunter bursts into the locker room, ducks his head as he passes Coach Dickson's office, and swings open his locker to try to get ready for practice as quickly as humanly possible.

"Nice of you to join us," Wesley teases.

"Do you think Coach noticed I'm late?"

As if on cue, Coach Dickson sticks his head out of his office and yells, "Vargas, you have more important places to be or something? If you're not ready in five minutes, you're benched on Friday." He slams his office door shut.

Landon laughs. "I'd go with yes."

Hunter rushes to get ready as Wesley asks, "Where were you?"

"I lost track of time with Marley," Hunter says as he attempts to pull his pants and shirt on at the same time.

Landon and Wesley groans in unison.

"Y'all are disgusting," Landon says.

"As if you and Rae don't make out," Hunter retorts. Landon whimpers slightly at the mention of Rae. "What was that?"

"Rae got grounded or something this weekend, so Landon here hasn't heard from her in two days and is now freaking out," Wesley explains.

Hunter pulls his shoulder pads on. "Not to be the bearer of bad news, but she wasn't grounded. She slept over at Marley's all weekend."

"What?" Landon practically screams, earning some confused glances from other teammates as they begin exiting the locker room.

"Great, Hunt." Wesley groans. "Now all me reassurance is gone and this is all he's going to be able to think about."

Wesley is right. The entire practice, Landon can only think about Rae and why she isn't talking to him. His kick's are a mess all practice. He even misses the ball a few times. Spending practically all day every day for almost four years with the same person leads to a strong attachment, and having gone over two days without talking to Rae, Landon feels like he's missing a half of himself. It's hard to do anything as only half of a person.

When they go back into the locker room at the end of practice, Landon hopes to see Rae sitting in Coach Dickson's office with Marley. If Marley was her ride to school, maybe she'd be her ride home from it. Marley's alone in there, making eyes at Hunter as he walks by.

Landon changes out of his pads and practice uniform and back into his regular clothes quickly. He knocks on Coach Dickson's office door even though it's open. He asks if he can talk to Marley outside, earning a more than confused look from Coach Dickson. He and Marley walk outside.

"Has Rae said anything to you?" Landon asks, looking down at his feet. "About me?"

Marley shakes her head. "Not really. Just that she's scared and didn't want to be at her house so wanted to be at mine."

"Scared of what? Of me?" She can't be scared of Landon, can she? He's the least intimidating person in Ruby. It'd make more sense to be scared of Sabina or Rae than to be scared of Landon.

"I really don't know. She didn't want to talk about whatever it was."

"Is she staying at your house again tonight?"

"No," Marley says. "She said three nights away from her house was too much, so she needed to go home."

Landon drives to the Lees' house before going home. When he knocks on the door, Mrs. Lee opens it. She doesn't even try to hide the disappointment from her face. She tells him that Rae's in her room. He walks the familiar path to her room, opens the door, and finds her sprawled out on her bed doing precalculus homework with her earphones in. With her music playing, she doesn't hear Landon come in. She doesn't notice him until he's sitting next to her. She takes her earphones out, and they both just kind of sit there, neither one knowing what to say.

"What's going on?" Landon finally asks.

Rae sits up on her bed. She takes a while to respond, trying to think of the right words to say. "The fight you had with Wesley... It really scared me, Landon."

"We're fine now, babe."

"The things you said and did... I don't like that you were able to do that to someone you say you love."

He places his hand on her arm, drawing little circles on her skin with his pointer finger. "I was just angry."

"That doesn't make it okay!" The sudden fire in her voice takes Landon aback and causes him to retreat his arm. "My dad was 'just angry' when he used to throw things around the house like a mad man. My parents are 'just angry' when they say the types of things you said to Wes to me."

"I'm not your dad," Landon practically whispers. "I would never hurt you."

"But you did it to Wesley," she says. "You showed that you're willing and able to hurt someone you love both physically and emotionally, and I don't like that, Landon. I hate that."

"It was just a one time thing," he says, his voice cracking. "It's never going to happen again. I promise."

"It really scares me," she whispers. "And I need more time to think about it all."

Landon's not sure exactly what she means by needing more time to think about it all. Is she thinking about breaking up with him?

"Okay," is all he manages to say, unable to voice all the questions he has and unsure of what he can do to make it better. He kisses her cheek. "I love you, Rae. I'll see you later, I guess."
