Chapter 13

Rae, Landon, Sabina, Wesley, Marley, and Hunter sit in a large u-shaped booth inside Fatso's after the Renegades win their game. Marley is the only one talking, either unaware or unconcerned about the tension amongst the rest of the group. Landon keeps glaring at Wesley, who is trying to be happy holding Sabina's hand and sitting close to her but can feel Landon's eyes on him. Rae's avoiding meeting Landon's eye, which he alternates between shooting daggers at Wesley and looking like a sad puppy at Rae, because she's angry that Landon didn't keep calm around Wesley. Sabina's trying to be happy with Wesley but can't help but be angry with him over the black eye and cut lip he gave Landon. Hunter's just freaking out that Coach Dickson will walk in at any moment and see him sitting next to Marley and freak out.

Basically, everyone is freaking out and/or angry. Except Marley. Nobody even knows what Marley is talking about.

Wesley coughs in discomfort. "Landon, can I talk to you outside?"

"No," Landon replies. Rae slaps his arm, and he groans. "Fine."

The two guys climb out of the booth, finally shutting Marley up and causing everyone at the booth, and people at some of the other surrounding booths, to look out the windows that make up the whole front wall of Fatso's. Wesley and Landon step into the parking lot, and with nearly the entire restaurant watching, Landon punches Wesley in the face.

"Oh shit," Hunter grumbles, moving to try to get out of the booth, but Rae glares at him, causing him to sink back into his original seat.

"Let them work this out on their own," she hisses.

"What the fuck, Landon!" Wesley yells in the parking lot. He touches his cheek where the sucker punch landed gingerly, wincing in pain. Landon's skinny little arms can cause some damage when he's pissed.

"How long have you been screwing my sister?" Landon asks. He grabs Wesley by his shirt and shakes him. "How long?"

Wesley shoves him away. "I'm not."

"What?"

"I'm not sleeping with her," Wesley explains. "I kissed her for the first time at the last party you had. The most we've done is make out."

"You really expect me to believe that?" Landon asks. "All you ever want is sex. You complained constantly about all your girlfriends and said you were only with them for sex. All you ever do is hook up until you get tired of the same girl and then get in the pants of some other girl."

"It's not like that with Sabina."

"How do you expect me to believe that? You've told me you get bored too easily to actually date a girl. You've told me there's no use in trying to find love in high school. You've told me you only get with girls who are easy. You're a disgusting whore, and I'm not going to let my sister be your next slut."

Any anger in Wesley is replaced by hurt as he stands quietly and hears Landon go on and on about how horrible of a guy he is. The words sink in. He's heard basically the same thing from countless people, but this is Landon. This is his best friend. This is the guy he's been growing up with practically attached at the hip to since elementary school. This is the guy he considers his fifth brother. Yet Landon sees Wesley the same way everyone else does. "That's really all you think of me? That I'm some sex crazed ass incapable of loving someone?"

"Well, that's all that you are, isn't it? You've got football and you've got girls and that's it. You were embarrassed to be seen with her, but it should've been the other way around."

Wesley isn't the type to cry, but it's hard for him to stop himself as he hears Landon. He's always known these things about himself, but hearing Landon say them confirms them to be true. He's nothing. He'll be trapped in Ruby forever knowing high school was the best it'll ever be for him and married to some girl like Lilly Xavier and working jobs he'll never enjoy. Even his best friend knows it. The best friend that always told him otherwise has known it all along.

"Whatever, Landon," Wesley says, trying to make his voice sound angry but knowing the only way it'll sound is defeated and sad. "Some best friend you are." He turns to start walking back to the restaurant, but stops and turns back to Landon. "Sabina is the best person I've ever known, and I've been crazy about her since forever. She's not like the other girls, and she'll never be that to me. She's so much more than that, and the past month has been the best of my life not because I've been getting high or drunk or laid but because I've been spending every moment possible talking to her, and any second I'm not talking to her, I'm thinking about her and things to talk to her about. I know that she's way too good for me and that I don't deserve her, but I've been trying to be better. I know that I'm stupid and worthless and nothing outside this stupid town and..."

Wesley continues to list things he hates about himself, and without even realizing it, he's started crying. Landon notices and starts hating himself for causing his best friend to feel this way and for saying the things he said. Wesley can be a mess, but he's also been the closest thing to family he has outside Sabina. He's like the brother he always wanted but never had. Landon's best memories are with three people and three people only- Sabina, Rae, and Wesley. It's hard for Landon to hate Wesley for long.

"Oh, shut up," Landon mumbles, hugging Wesley.

"And the bromance is back," Hunter comments, still watching out the window of Fatso's. He's always wondered if the two are secretly gay for each other. It wouldn't surprise him or anyone else, really.

Rae takes a sip of her Dr. Pepper. "They always fight and break up and then kiss and make up."

"You're a messy piece of shit, but you're still the best person I know," Landon says.

"I hate when you hate me," Wesley says, trying to make himself laugh.

"You know you're my best friend, and I can never actually hate you," Landon says. "But I do hate that you're dating my sister. Like, I really, really hate it."

"I'll make you love it," Wesley promises. "I'm going to be a better boyfriend to her than you are to Rae."

"Okay, don't get ahead of yourself now."

"Hey, I did learn boyfriend-ing from the best."

The two finally stop hugging and look at the restaurant, finding that the restaurant is looking at them.

"The Lesley rumors are definitely making a comeback after that hug," Landon jokes.
