08 || AFTERMATH
What had once been a relatively calm and collected fire scene, as much as it could be given the situation, had now erupted into what could only be described as mild chaos.
The blaring of the car alarm echoed throughout the street, the hushed whispers of those surrounding the area barely heard over it. Water was spraying everywhere, trying to fight the flames that had begun to grow fierce and high within the walls of the apartment complex. And Irina? Well Irina lay sunken into the roof of a car, her arms splayed out and hanging off the sides as she stared up at the sky above her, watching the clouds drift slowly by.
That had hurt a lot more than it had the last time she jumped from a three story building... Oh and who the hell put that car there?
"Irina!" Otis's voice was the first to reach Irina's now ringing ears, both from the explosion and the high pitched wail of the car alarm below her. One that would need to be shut off before it drove her insane.
Otis ran to her side, followed swiftly behind by pretty much the entirety of fifty-one, or at least those not preoccupied with fighting the current fire that was roaring next to them.
"Ow." Irina groaned out, surprising everyone around her when they saw she was awake instead of out cold like they'd expected. "Who put this car here?"
"Irina, are you alright?" Boden asked, also in complete and utter shock that not only was she awake, but that she was talking and seemingly making jokes.
"No." Irina half scoffed half groaned out, pulling her arms out of the huge dents in the metal they were currently stuck in, small pieces of glass falling to the ground. "I just jumped from a window... Or did I imagine that? I do that sometimes."
"How are you even conscious let alone talking?" Casey asked, completely flustered and out of breath as he'd climbed down the aerial faster than he'd ever done before the minute he saw her jump from the window.
"Whoa, hey, don't move." Shay said seriously, watching in disbelief as Irina was trying to sit up in the body shaped dent she'd left behind in the roof of the car. A very huge dent that almost touched the floor of the car it was sunken in that much.
"Yeah, you could have a serious spinal injury." Gabby added, with as much seriousness as Shay as she fumbled for a c-collar and tried to lift herself up onto the car a little to secure it around Irina's neck.
"Get off me." Irina grumbled out a touch angrily, which was well within her rights as she'd just jumped from a window and landed on a car. "I'm fine." She added, pushing Gabby's hands away from her as she sat up straight, the only pain being a small tingle shooting up her spine.
"Fine? You just jumped three stories and landed on a car. You could have died." Casey pointed out, him along with the entire crowd surrounding the car absolutely lost of words when Irina lifted herself out of the dent below her and jumped down from the car, landing with a hefty thud on the ground.
"But I didn't." Irina replied with a small groan as she shook some glass from her hair. Her legs felt a bit sorer than she would have expected, but given what was coursing through her veins, she'd still be able to run a marathon should she wish.
"How in the hell..." Mouch whispered out, exchanging looks with pretty much everyone at the fact that Irina was even able to walk after what had happened to her.
"Don't think about it too much, Mouch. You might hurt yourself." She joked, chuckling a little as she looked around her. "Did anyone see where my helmet went?"
"Irina, I don't know how you're even walking and talking right now... Whether it be the adrenaline or what not, but you need to go to the hospital. Get yourself checked out, you could have internal bleeding, or a head injury." Boden said seriously, stepping in front of Irina who literally showed no signs that she'd jumped from a window.
Who the hell was this girl?
"Respectfully, Chief... I don't want doctors poking and prodding at me when I'm perfectly fine." Irina breathed out, spotting her helmet lying on the grass next to her. "Ah, there's my helmet." As she went to pick up her helmet, Boden grabbed hold of her upper arm, carefully though as he had no idea whether she was hurt internally.
Holding back the glare she felt coming over the hand that was currently touching her, Irina turned, a little annoyed, back towards the Chief. Reminding herself that he was her superior and that he was in charge.
"Irina." Boden said sternly, releasing his grip on her arm as her attempts at hiding the discomfort and hatred she had for being touched didn't work as well as she hoped they had. "That's an order."
"Yes, Chief." Irina huffed out a little, everything inside her that she'd been trained to do not allowing her to contradict a direct order despite how much she hated hospitals and anything to do with medical personnel.
Fine, she'd go to the hospital. But that didn't mean she would be letting anyone examine her in any shape or form. And so help her if one doctor came anywhere near her with a needle, she wouldn't be responsible for what happened.
It's not that she was scared of needles, as she couldn't care less about them given how many times she'd been stuck, stabbed and shot. It was just that she was under strict instruction by her father, Dreykov (despite him being dead), and even Nick Fury himself that she was to, under no circumstances, allow anyone to draw her blood.
Irina's blood was special, and different. The serum coursing through her veins changed the dynamics of her blood drastically compared to that of a normal human. And if by some miracle she managed to have her secret remain hidden after what had just happened, she didn't need some smug doctor exposing her when her blood looked a little different that they were used to.
And she absolutely didn't need a vial of her blood out there in the world where it could end up in the wrong hands. Because anyone smart enough would be able to easily use her blood to recreate the super solider serum, and the last thing the world needed was more super soldiers, as the ones currently out there, are bad enough.
After Irina was loaded into the back of the ambulance, against her will she might add, and not without complaints. And after the fire was under control by other companies that had arrived on scene, the rest of fifty-one followed Irina and the paramedics all the way to Lakeshore, where they weren't at all surprised to hear that Irina was refusing any form of treatment.
"If you come anywhere near me with that needle so help me God." Irina pretty much growled out, two steps away from needing to be held back as she waved nurses and doctors away from her as they tried to examine her.
"Dawson, Shay." Boden's voice cut through the chaos, catching sight of the paramedics who stood off to the side, neither of them feeling at all jealous of Dr Thomas who had been unlucky enough to catch Irina's case.
Although Irina better think twice before subtly threatening Dr Thomas again, especially now that Casey was present as Dr Thomas, or Hallie as she's more know by around fifty-one, was Casey's fiancée.
"What's the situation?" Boden asked hesitantly, wondering to himself if he even wanted to know.
"She won't let them near her, Chief." Gabby explained, the curtain to Irina's bay flying open as a nurse went scrambling out of there, half scared out of her poor mind.
Boden sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as he had no idea how to begin handling this situation. He'd never dealt with someone even remotely close to Irina, what with her hot temper and shady background. Yes, she followed orders better than anyone he'd ever seen before, but there was clearly a limit at to what she would do, and he figured that getting checked out by doctors was one of them.
"Chief?" Otis's quiet and concerned voice pulled Boden out of his thoughts as Irina's angry Russian protests filled the ER and more nurses came scrambling, terrified, out from her bay.
"Otis? What is it?" Boden asked, letting out a small sigh when the clanging of something metal hitting the ground echoed through the room.
"Maybe I can talk to her? See if I can calm her down?" He said reluctantly, kind of not wanting to go anywhere near Irina in her current anger filled state. But he knew he stood the best chance of getting through to her. And he'd had time to calm himself down after the intense fear and worry that had been flowing through him when he watched her body hit that car.
He still had no idea how she even survived that and he guessed he probably never would. Another page in the Irina conspiracy that was floating around inside his mind.
After a nod of agreement from Boden, Otis held his breath as he slowly walked towards Irina's hospital bay, that was now empty minus the angry Russian herself. Gathering up as much courage as he could find within himself, and ignoring the pit of dread in his stomach, Otis gripped the edge of the curtain and slowly pulled it back.
"I said get the hell away from me!" Irina called back, her accent thicker than ever before as she sat with her back to Otis, the name on the bottom of her turnout jacket looking a little extra crispy due to the fire.
"Irina..." Otis breathed out, a little higher pitched than he would have wanted but what could he do? She was truly terrifying right now. Although he did see how her form relaxed a little when she heard it was him.
"Keep them away from me." She said quietly, for the first time since she entered the building. "I don't want them near me. And I don't want them touching me."
Otis noticed the way she folded her arms, grabbing hold of each bicep and he knew that something must have happened in her past to make her hate doctors, more than any normal person would. But she needed to get checked out. She'd just fallen three stories and landed on a car for crying out loud, she should be severely injured or even dead, yet here she was. Sitting upright without a scratch on her and fighting with her doctors. Otis had truly never seen anything like it, and part of him grew more suspicious or her.
"Irina, you gotta let them examine you. You could have internal bleeding or a head injury." Otis replied, softly so as to not awaken the angry beast again, so to speak. He wouldn't really call her a beast, she was scared and he, most of all, understood that.
"Do I look like I have a head injury?" She scoffed out, finding it a small bit strange how she started relaxing once she caught sight of Otis out of the corner of her eye as he carefully edged closer to her. She knew he was probably terrified of her right now, and honestly that made her feel a little bad for losing her temper so much but who could blame her?
"I've seen plenty of people who seem fine on the outside but have serious internal injuries." Otis explained, rounding the bed more so he came to stand in front of her. "I don't know how you're even standing after falling from that window, but you gotta get checked out."
"But I don't want to." Irina whispered, shaking her head as she looked down at the ground, the medical instruments she'd knocked over in her angry rage scattered across the floor.
Otis's heart nearly broke over the tone of her voice, as for once it sounded scared, rather than it being the thing that made other people scared. He walked slowly, and still carefully, towards her, bringing one finger to her chin and gently lifting her head to look at him.
"Hey, whatever or whoever you're afraid of." He said softly, his finger remaining on her chin. "They can't hurt you here... And Dr Thomas, not only is she the best, but she's also Casey's fiancée, so I know you'll be in good hands."
Irina had no idea which of the people she'd sent running from her bedside was Dr Thomas, but she low-key hoped it wasn't one she'd threatened should she come near her with a needle. But no matter what Otis said, no matter how sweet he was being, which made her feel all warm and tingly inside and that confused her and she didn't like it, Irina would not under any circumstances be allowing the doctors to come anywhere near her.
Otis felt a brief feeling of relief and success flow through his body as it had taken Irina a minute to answer him, as if she'd been debating inside her head whether she was going to listen to him. But when she opened her mouth, both his heart and his stomach sank to the floor.
"No." She said sternly, any fear or weakness gone from her tone as she pushed his hand to the side and away from her. "Now leave me alone."
"Irina..." Otis breathed out in defeat, but he knew it was no use. Once Irina had made up her mind about something, he knew there was no changing it.
"I said leave me alone." Irina snapped back, ignoring the way she felt inside when she saw him flinch just a little bit and take a step back. She honestly felt awful for being harsh with him, but she needed to get her point across. "Actually, I'll just go myself. Maybe then you people will leave me alone."
Irina slid off the bed, her feet hitting the medical instruments on the floor and sending them scattering further along the tiles. She rounded the bed, away from Otis who was a little afraid to move in case he ended up in her way, and she gripped the curtain, pulling it open a little too hard as a few of the hooks snapped off.
"Irina." Boden said sternly, reminding himself that he shouldn't be scared of Irina as he was her Chief, and it was up to him to make sure she was checked out by a doctor.
Irina just ignored him as she began walking down the corridor towards the exit, doctors and nurses taking steps back away from her as they could feel the anger radiating off her, and it was a lot of anger for such a small woman.
"Irina!" Boden half yelled after her, moving a few steps closer to her so he was now in the middle of the hallway.
Irina stopped before the exit, just far enough away that she hadn't activated the sensors for the automatic door. She took a breath, wondering if she was about to ruin everything she'd worked for since escaping the nightmare that was her past.
"I'm not getting checked out." She said sternly, only glancing over her shoulder enough to see Boden, and the others, out of the corner of her eye. "And if that means you have to fire me. Then so be it." And with that, she left.
Those left standing in the hospital corridor didn't know what to think about what had just happened. Between Irina walking away from the fall with what looked like zero injuries. To her refusing any sort of medical care and scaring the life out of the hospital staff. And to her walking away from Chief Boden, saying she didn't care if he fired her for refusing medical attention. There was a lot to absorb right now, and those who'd witnessed it, didn't think they had the strength or the energy to do so right now.
"Otis." Boden turned to Otis, who just now only managed to force himself to move from what had been Irina's medical bay and join the others. "What the hell happened in there?"
"I-I have no idea, Chief." Otis shook his head, not fully understanding the whole situation. The only thing he knew right now was that it was all incredibly strange. "She seemed scared, almost? Like she was worried about what they were going to do to her."
"Do you think it has anything to do with her past? The orphanage or whatever?" Boden asked, forgetting that those around them had no idea about Irina's abusive past.
"Orphanage?" Gabby repeated, glancing over at Shay who just shrugged her shoulders. "Irina grew up in an orphanage?"
"She did. And it was a bad one." Boden replied, running a hand down his face as he just glanced at Otis, who nodded his as if to say 'you should tell them'.
"Bad? Bad how?" Cruz asked, his eyes shifting between Boden and Otis, who clearly both knew something they didn't.
"Not here." Boden shook his head. "Let's just find Irina and get back to fifty-one."
When the guys went outside, having expected Irina to just be waiting by the Trucks or pacing up and down the dark street, they were a little surprised to find that she was no where to be seen.
"Maybe she walked back to the firehouse? It's not that far." Otis suggested, knowing that Irina liked to be outside at night as there's a been a few times when she'd mentioned that she walks the streets at night sometimes. Something that worried him given that she was a woman and Chicago could be dangerous during the day, never mind at night, but something in the back of his mind told him she'd probably be able to handle herself.
But when the guys returned to the firehouse, having been keeping their eyes peeled on the streets surrounding them as they drove incase they saw Irina, it was empty, aside from the engine company who'd returned from the fire.
"Huh, guess she went home." Mouch said, after those who'd arrived back searched the firehouse for any sign of Irina but came up empty. Even her hanger in the turnout room was empty and her locker was full. And not to mention her bike that was still parked outside. It was clear to them that she hadn't returned to the firehouse, and most likely wouldn't for the rest of the shift.
"Chief, what aren't you telling us?" Severide asked, for himself and those around him who grew more curious about what Boden had meant back in the hospital about Irina growing up bad orphanage.
Boden sighed as he took a seat at the table in the common room, a cup of coffee in his hands, much like the others who were growing a little tired given that it was now four in the morning.
"Last year..." It was Otis who spoke first, gaining the attention of those in the room. "...after that call with the impalement, I accidentally walked in on Irina when she was changing and before I could look away, or even realise what had happened, I noticed something."
"Noticed what?" Cruz asked, a little concerned. Normally Otis would have told him if he'd walked in on a woman while she was changing, and Cruz would have found amusement in it, but this was clearly not the right time.
"Scars. A lot of scars, littered across her back like someone had been working her over with a belt." Otis replied, the stomachs of those in the room sinking at his words.
"After that, Otis came to me. Voicing his concern that Irina was being abused, perhaps by a boyfriend or a parent. And so I spoke to her and she told me that what had happened to her, had happened when she was a child. Growing up in an abusive orphanage. Now I don't know all the details as she wasn't that open to telling me-"
"I do." Otis confessed, remembering exactly what Irina had told him about where she grew up. It wasn't something that he'd probably ever forget as it still made him sick to his stomach anytime he thought about it. "I spoke to her, afterwards and she told me everything..."
Otis went on the tell the guys everything that Irina had told him. From the girls being handcuffed to their beds at night. To her getting shot for freeing herself and trying to escape. He told them about her father, who was put in prison which is most likely why Irina was sent to the orphanage in the first place and he told them about her sisters, who no doubt suffered through the same awful things that she did.
He knew Irina would hate him, and the Chief, for them telling the guys about her past when she made it exceptionally clear that she didn't want anyone to know. But right now, after what they'd witnessed in the hospital, it was only fair that they should know. As her history was more than likely responsible for her actions earlier that night.
Although it didn't explain how she walked away from that fall with zero injuries, so that was still an unanswered question floating around inside their minds, one they assumed would never be answered.
"My God, that poor girl." Herrmann mumbled out, feeling sicker than he'd ever felt before after hearing all the horrible things that happened to Irina as a child.
"You think that's why she's so against doctors? Because of what happened?" Gabby suggested, her voice low and filled with disgust.
"It's likely." Otis shrugged gently. "I mean, she never mentioned anything about doctors specifically but it would make sense."
"It still doesn't explain how she walked away from that fall." Severide pointed out, remembering a time when he fell off the top of the firetruck and ended up walking with a limp for a week. And yet Irina had fallen three stories and landed on a car yet she didn't even seem fazed.
"Right now, that doesn't matter. All that matters is that we make sure she is okay and that she knows we are here for her." Boden replied, also still curious as to how she survived that fall but more than that he was just worried about whatever internal injuries she may have had. "I'll swing by her apartment in the morning, but for now, I'll take the house out of service for the remainder of shift. So go and get some rest."
There was only four hours left on shift anyway, and Boden could tell his men and women were exhausted, so for now all he wanted was for them to get some rest, and let him worry about Irina. He had no idea what he was going to say to her or how he was going to make her come with him to the hospital to her checked out, but all he knew was that she had to.
Come 8am, he'd be knocking on her apartment door and she'd either be going willingly with him to the hospital or he'd have to do it the hard way, which he hadn't quite figured out just what that was yet.

you'll get to see more about why irina hates doctors so much, despite not wanting them to find out her secret after examining her but yeah...
i'm wondering if i should have her tell boden the truth? at least about her being a super soldier but i'm not sure yet... i feel like that would be the only way he'd be happy with her not going to the hospital so it may have to happen but let me know what you guys think... should she tell him?
anyway, hope you liked this chapter and if you did, don't forget to leave a vote and maybe a comment? really helps me out
