Happiness when I'm with Ivan
Three weeks have gone by. Three more weeks to go. I am liking Ivan more and more as the weeks have gone by.
I wake up, again, to the sound of Ivan snoring. I cover my ears to keep me from hearing that awful sound. As I lay in the hospital bed, I wondered when Ivan is going to ask me to be his girlfriend. I know I said I wanted to take it slow, but I feel like I spent a year with Ivan because I know so much about him. A nurse walked into the room.
"Tell Ivan that..um..oh god... it's hard for me to say this." ,The nurse said.
"Say what?" I asked.
"It's hard for me to say that.. umm...uh....his....umm....little brother got ran over by a car and....um....now he is dead." ,the nurse muttered.
"Oh my god, I don't think I can tell him that. I hate to see Ivan cry." ,I said.
"But wouldn't it be better for him to know now instead of his dad telling him when he gets out of this recovery room?" ,The nurse asked.
"Yeah, right. Fine, I'll tell him." ,I said. The nurse walked out of the recovery room.
Ivan woke up.
"Hey, how ya doing?" ,I asked Ivan.
"Good." Ivan said. I don't know when I'm supposed to tell him.
"That's good." ,I said.
"I don't know why, but I feel like this is going to be a good day." ,Ivan said, happily. Oh my god, I don't want to ruin his happiness.
"Yeah." I said, looking down.
"Why do you look so sad? Is something going on that I don't know about?" ,Ivan asked, concerned. I just had to say it.
"Ivan, I can't hold this back anymore. Your brother died. A car ran him over." ,I said, still looking down. Ivan's hazel blue eyes went watery, and then Ivan started crying.
"Ivan, it's okay." I said, comforting him.
"It's okay? It's not okay, my brother died, you idiot!" ,Ivan yelled. A pang of hurtfulness thumped in my chest.
"I was just trying to comfort you." ,I said.
"Just shut up!" ,Ivan yelled. I had never seen Ivan this angry before.
"Ivan, I hate to see you this way." ,I said.
"And what do you want me to do, stop crying? My brother shouldn't have died so young. He always wanted to learn how to skateboard, but he never did. He never got to volunteer at this cat and dog shelter called paws. He never got to complete his goals. And worst of all, he never got to fall in love!" ,Ivan yelled.
"Ok, I guess I'll leave you alone now." ,I said, turning around. I close my eyes, trying to fall asleep, but I can't fall asleep. Ivan's sobbing is so loud. Dr. Norman walked in the room.
"Ivan, I made these cookies for you, to comfort you." He said, giving a bag full of cookies for Ivan.
"Hey, Ivan" ,Dr. Norman said, putting a hand on Ivan's shoulder. "It's okay. At least you still have your father."
The next day, Ivan wasn't so mad at me anymore.
"Liv, I'm sorry for calling you an idiot yesterday. I was so angry that I just couldn't control myself. I'm sorry,", he said.
"It's okay, I understand.", I said.
"No, you don't understand. You don't understand what it's like to lose your brother.", he muttered quietly.
"Okay, Liv, I don't want this to be a sad day again, alright? Hmm.. lets talk about what you want to be when you become an adult."
"Happy.", I said. Ivan laughed.
"Come on, Liv. You know what I mean.", he said.
"I kind of want to become a photographer and take pictures of wild animals or become a vet or... something that involves animals.", I said.
"Hmm...your'e an animal lover? Cool. I want to become an actor.", he said.
"An actor, really? So that you could be famous?"
"Yeah, I want people to know who I am. Liv, can I practice improvisation with you?", Ivan said.
"Sure.", I said.
"Olivia Fisher, I know you killed him.", he said in a deep voice. I laughed.
"Wait... Why did you laugh?", he asked.
"You said it in such a deep voice, and I don't know... it made me laugh.", I said.
"Oh, come on! The deep voice makes it cool.", Ivan said.
"Come on, Ivan, just do it in your normal voice.", I said.
"Fine. Olivia fisher, I know you killed him.", he said.
"How could you possibly know that?", I asked.
"I saw, on camera, you entering his house with a gun. And when he entered his house, I heard him scream.", Ivan said.
"How did you know it was me entering the house?" I asked.
"Everyone knew it was you. It looked exactly like you.", Ivan said.
"Fine! It was me! I surrender! Take me to jail, I don't care! Perhaps I could find a way out of it!", I yelled.
"Wow! Liv, you should become an actress", he said.
"Thank you. I used to want to become an actress.", I said.
"You should become an actress.", Ivan repeated.
"No, Ivan, I want to do a job involving animals. Do you have a problem with that?", I asked Ivan.
"No. It's fine. Do whatever you want. It's your life.", he said.
..........................................
That night, Ivan said something I will cherish forever.
A nurse turned the light off in the recovery room.
"I can't bend down to touch the ground now. I'm afraid someone will bully me. If I'm trying to (but can't) bend down to tie my shoes someone will say 'Poor Liv, do you need someone to tie your shoes for you?'" ,I said, worrying.
"Liv, that someone would be an idiot for bullying you. That person would be an idiot for not seeing how amazing you truly are. You're amazing, Liv. Remember that." ,Ivan said. I then had a wide smile spread across my face. I closed my eyes. It wasn't hard to sleep that night at all.
When I woke up the next morning, I remembered what Ivan said last night. Ivan said I'm amazing. I don't know what makes me so amazing. I'm so awkward and I'm just weird. But, to Ivan, I'm amazing. I don't know how I have that quality, but I'll take what Ivan said and I'll remember it forever. I really like Ivan now. I'll miss him when I leave this recovery room.
When Ivan woke up, I said "Am I really amazing? I mean, I'm so awkward. I'm clumsy too." ,I said. Ivan grinned.
"What?" ,I asked.
"You don't even know how amazing you are, Liv.", Ivan said. I smiled.
"You're right. I don't know how amazing I am to you. All I know is that I'm clumsy, awkward, and weird." ,I said.
"And I like all your flaws." ,Ivan said.
"So.. what are you saying? My flaws are what makes me amazing?" ,I asked.
"No, it's not because of your flaws. It's because you were the only person that made me happy after I got my leg surgery." ,Ivan said. I got a warm feeling in my heart.
"I was the only person that made you happy?",I ask.
"You heard me.",he said. I smiled. Gosh, Ivan makes me smile countless times.
