Chapter 1
Hunter was in a rush as he ran around and got ready for the day. Though he was the steward and was in charge of the castle servants. This didn't mean he was any less busy. He had to stay up late or wake up very early to have the list of assignments ready for the others. Hunter finished dressing in his uniform as he shrugged on his coat. His uniform consisted of a white, long sleeve, and lace-up shirt.
He wore black pants that were a bit baggy. As well as black boots that laced up a bit under his knee. Hunter turned to the small mirror to make sure his hair was presentable. His hair was light brown. It was in a shorter style, it was shorter at the sides and an unruly mess of curls at the top. His skin was a tan color, all of his looks matching his mothers.
She had been a traveling dancer who had spent a few nights with a customer. This led to her being pregnant and having to settle in a small village. The only thing his father had gifted him was his forest colored eyes. He abhorred his eyes as much as he did his father who had abandoned him and his mother. Hunter turned away and gathered up his ledger which held the assignments for the day. With that, he turned and left the room, so that he would not be late for the meeting.
Hunter walked down the flights of steps quickly, he scolded himself internally at leaving at such a time. He was supposed to set an example to the others, being late was not what he wanted to encourage. As he rushed to the door down the hall that was holding the meeting. He crashed to the floor after tripping on air. He landed with a loud yelp as his papers scattered.
He felt embarrassed as he began to pick himself up. He flushed further as he heard a chuckle from down the hall. Hunter was extremely red as he looked up to see who was enjoying his misery. He quickly pulled his gaze back down as he realized it was likely someone from the nobility. Hunter scurried to pick up his things and was surprised when the man walked toward him and began helping pick up his stray papers. Hunter felt grateful as he took the papers back and thanked the man.
" Thank you, sir, I'm sorry to have been in the way." The man laughed once more and smiled " It's fine, you looked to be in a rush. Are you late for something?" he asked cheekily. Hunter gave a sheepish nod " Ah, yes sir I have a meeting" Hunter hoped this meant the man would leave him alone.
The man nodded " Right, well I'll stop keeping you then." he said and nodded for Hunter to go on. Hunter nodded " Yes, well good day sir" The man gave a hum in response and spoke a final time. " Good day steward, I am Duke Beckett Saber. Do make sure to remember my name" Duke saber said teasingly and started to make his way down the hall.
Hunter watched the Duke leave, he was humiliated. He had addressed the Duke as a title as low as sir. But he couldn't help but be curious about the man. He had made sure to memorize the nobles of the kingdom. The Saber Dukedom had been completely eradicated after they betrayed the king and did illegal business with another kingdom. Hunter was sure he would have remembered the duke.
The man was very attractive after all, he seemed young with light brown hair and hazel eyes. Hunter would have remembered that muscled body with such a chiseled face. Hunter was embarrassed by his fantasies of the attractive duke. He slapped his cheeks lightly to focus and began to rush once again. His thoughts had led him astray and he was now even later.
Hunter decided it was best to keep his plight to himself. He doubted the others would like to hear his excuses. He merely apologized and got straight to the point of the meeting. Hunter had quickly passed around everyone's daily assignments and went to give a few reminders of events. He finished the meeting up relatively quickly and dismissed everyone so they could get to work.
As the final person left the room he gave a large sigh of relief. He was quite young for his job, so it was all very stressful, at times. Most of the people under him were people in their 30s and he was only just turning 22. He was proud of his position and the work he had done to gain it. But others felt it was unfair of him to have such a high ranking at his young age.
Hunter did his best to ignore such talk, but he couldn't help but feel this at times was true. Hunter felt inadequate compared to the other, more experienced servants. Many of them had been serving the kingdom since they were kids. He had only just joined when he was in his early teen years and had risen in the ranks as a servant quickly. This had gained him the favor of many high ranking members of the nobility.
Hunter shook his head and pushed this feeling down, He had other work that he needed to complete. There was no time for him to continue to dwell on such thoughts, he was sure it would get better with time. For now, he would get to work and possibly look into the new duke, he was a Duke. But Hunter didn't see the issue in just looking, after all, no one had to know about such things. All Hunter had to do was keep all this to himself. With that Hunter began to make his way to his office feeling a bit better about it all.
