Chapter 1
My name is Marie Wellington. I'm your typical eighth grader, mostly. There is one thing that sets me apart from everyone else: my dreams.
They aren't just visions of my mind's desires, they are a reality. Imagine a world that you could do anything, even the impossible in. What would you do?
Would you imagine yourself to be wealthy?
Attractive?
Powerful?
You could even be Taylor Swift if you're that kind of person. That's not what I imagine though. I picture long, warm days that never grow cloudy or cold and nights that are as clear as a million polished crystals. I imagine the flaws in society and perfect them. When I close my eyes, I see joy all around me. The football players are as dashing as ever but they don't shove those poor nerds into lockers or give them swirlies. They are actually nice to everyone. There is no "popular pack". Everyone is equal to everyone, no matter their looks or talents.
The one thing I've changed the most thought is me. I'm no longer the fat nobody who's stuck in the back corner of every class. I'm Marie Wellington, a student at Ratling Middle School who is not judged or reprimanded for my weight or overall beauty. No more shaming from Bridget and the rest of the cheerleaders. We're actually really good friends.
The best part of my utopia though is no doubt Kaleb. Back in the real world, I was just like every other girl, constantly hoping for the chance to even glance at him. Kaleb is the captain of the football team which automatically makes him the dream boyfriend for every girl in eighth grade. Sadly, there is only one girl who can call herself "Kaleb's girlfriend". Like every stereotypical middle school, Kaleb went for the hottest girl on the cheer squad. In this case, that's Bridget, although believe me when I say her inside could not be uglier nor her heart harder.
My mom said boys in middle school are stupid like that. They go for the prettiest instead of the kindest. I wish Kaleb knew I even existed...
"Ms. Wellington!" Mr. Parker shouts in my ear. I shoot up, startled by the rude awakening. "Do you have some place better to be?"
In my mind, I was screaming "I could name a hundred different ones, old man!" Since I am just Marie though, I found it best to keep my head down and my mouth shut when being scolded by a teacher, which happens quite often. It's always for day dreaming because I'm always trying to go to the reality that should exist.
"I've had enough of you, Ms. Wellington. You are dismissed to the principal's office," Mr. Parker iterates, stroking back his nonexistent hair.
