Chap. 7 Holding Back

Third Person's P.O.V.

It had been a day since (Y/n) and Kakashi returned from their mission, and after resting all night and half of the morning, (Y/n) decided to do something creative.

(Y/n) stood in the living room of her new apartment, painting the wall while listening to blaring music. She was swaying, wearing nothing but a T-shirt and panties. She was listening to inappropriate music and painting Van Gogh on her wall. Well, to the best of what she could remember that Starry Night looked like.

She knew she would have to pay to have it repainted if she ever left that apartment, but this was an impulse painting. Nothing she could do about it.

"I'm right here, Bih, let's go-"

"(Y/n)?"

She screeched, dropping her paintbrush and pallet against the floor and swiftly turning to see her former Sensei, who was blushing and wide-eyed. She was now also blushing and wide-eyed, realizing that, not only was she in her underwear and a T-shirt that didn't quite cover, but her T-shirt also had the cover of 'Icha-Icha Paradise, the movie' on it. She was certain he noticed that.

"Uh, hi, Sensei..."

"Hi." He averted his eye. "Get dressed. Turn the music off. Shisui and Yume are back. Thank god I didn't bring them here..." He whispered the last part.

"R-Right. Sorry." She turned the music off, rushing to her bedroom to change. 'Well, that was totally embarrassing...' She thought, pulling her clothes on. 'It would've been different had it been Jiraiya. He already knows about the trash I listen to... but I was in my underwear... So I guess it was better to be Kakashi...'

She no longer wore a halter-top, but a black longsleeved shirt over her grey masked one. She wore black Capri-style sweatpants and her usual grey Ninja sandals. She slipped her leather jacket on, zipping it from the top down the center mid-way.

She grabbed her gear, attaching her different scrolls to her torso, and walked out of her bedroom. Kakashi was looking at her painting but turned to look at her when she walked out.

"You're incredibly talented... Why are you a Ninja, again?"

"Because I want to be. Painting is just a hobby."

"And writing?"

"A little more than a hobby... but I don't want to turn out like Jiraiya, either." She smiled, her eyes closing.

"I think it might be a little too late for that." He glanced at the disc player.

"Okay, fair enough." She chuckled nervously, hoping no one else found out about this.

They left the apartment building, an awkward silence hovering around them as they made their way to the Hokage residence.

Kakashi was unsure of what to think about how (Y/n) had changed. On one hand, he thought she had become much stronger, and more confident, but on the other, she seemed like a completely different person to him.

But it wasn't just him. Everyone around them had felt the same way. She spoke differently, fought differently, even her presence in a room was different. It was like her very being demanded attention.

It helped that she was likable, beautiful, smart, and physically strong, but her true strength came from her heart. It was attention-grabbing.

Kakashi knew she was going to be known well, someday. Even now, she was a strong Kunoichi. He could only guess that she would continue to grow.

But... there was this nagging feeling about her. Particularly, he thought she was hiding behind a mask... no pun intended.

He thought she had a facade, on top of which, she seemed like she was both trying for attention, and trying to evade it... potentially creating an internal battle.

And, he thought it was strange that she didn't want to show much of her powers while sparring with Jiraiya...

Mostly, he wondered if these small signs could stem from something he didn't know about.

"(Y/n), I want you to know that this woman, Yume, is a former ANBU operative. She's very strong, and yet, you may be on par with her, or close. As an ANBU, she will have a detailed impression of you from the first time you meet. On top of this, she will likely be able to see through any lies, facades, or otherwise. I'm not telling you this to scare you. I just want you to be one-hundred-percent you. I've noticed that you act differently in public than you do alone. Don't be afraid to open up... These two are good people."

(Y/n) looked over at him, "I guess it's that noticeable?"

"No... It is for me, but I know you well enough to know who you are. You aren't the trouble-causing type... and you aren't the type to worry about how people have changed... Or to hold back... Unless I'm wrong?"

She turned toward him as he stopped, "...There was this kid..."

******Flashback******

It was early in the morning, and (Y/n) woke with no particular gumption. She stood from the bed, stretching her arms above her head as she looked out the window of the inn she was staying in. Jiraiya had left her alone for a couple of weeks, looking into a lead on the Akatsuki, but she didn't know that.

Her morning wasn't much different from her other mornings, eat a light breakfast, go out and buy a few things impulsively out of boredom, and then sit on a roof and people-watch.

But as the afternoon slid around, things became eerie in the small town. No one else seemed to notice, but... (Y/n) had a bad feeling.

And she tended to trust those... The last time she had a bad feeling, she was kidnapped, and almost died. That was more than enough reason to be wary.

(Y/n)'s head flew to her left when she heard a blood-curdling scream. She raced through the street, her eyes widening as she came upon two men in cloaks, one with black and white markings covering his body, a maniacal grin covering his face, standing in a diagram of blood.

The other man was calmly standing to the side of him, but his attention rose to (Y/n) as she arrived.

The scene in front of her was one man, lying face down in the dirt, and covered in blood, one man, standing calmly as he looked over the situation, a woman and a boy, cowering in the corner where the tall fence met the building, trapping them, and an insane looking man with a creepy grin, despite his gaping wounds.

(Y/n) was frozen, her eyes wide. When the silver-haired, deranged man made eye contact with her, he grinned wider, seeing her Ninja gear and headband.

"Look, Kakuzu... Fresh meat..." He charged at her, pulling his scythe through the air and down toward her, but something stopped the blade before hitting the traumatized girl.

Her eyes widened further, and she stumbled back as a younger male saved her.

Time stopped.

No, literally, it stopped.

Everything was still. And she stood there for about two minutes before blinking, and finally processing everything that was going on, or not going on, around her. She stepped around the boy, the painful look on his face making her heart drop.

He looked to be about fifteen or so, but it seemed to have made no difference to the opposing Ninja. He was a Ninja, one from Kirigakure.

Time was standing still... but why? How? How was it stopped? And who stopped it?

She tried to move the opposing Ninja away, but with no luck. It was like he was frozen in place. She looked over to the woman and boy huddled in the corner, and the other man, and found that everything...

It was all as if they were statues, devoid of life.

Something told her this was her doing this...

As she calmed, things slowly began to move again, and then she stopped them.

Her eyes switched back and forth between the maniac and the boy, and then shifted to the other cloaked man. He had begun running when she resumed time, but he hadn't made it more than a step.

Her eyes turned back to the young Ninja once again, this time with something in mind...

She let time slowly pass and pulled the kid away from the scythe, and away from the scene.

When she returned, the man's eyes were wide, and Kakuzu was much closer to him now, but her priority was the woman and child. She pulled them to safety and sat them down near the hospital with the young Ninja.

Now, she stood back in front of the two cloaked men, panting as she lifted the Jutsu. Kakuzu stopped, watching the woman as she landed, and the other man grinned again, "This little bitch will be fun to kill..."

"No, Hidan." Kakuzu said, confusing the other two Ninja. "What's your name, girl?"

"What!?" Hidan asked.

"Shut up!" Kakuzu said, turning his attention toward (Y/n).

"My name is (L/n) (Y/n)."

"Kakuzu! There's no reason to keep her alive!"

"She's young. I've never heard of her... Killing her now would waste a good bounty. And it won't take more than a few years for there to be one. Let's go, Hidan."

When (Y/n) returned to the hospital, she found that the boy who saved her was dead, and she told the medical Ninja that there was another body, and told them where it was.

She couldn't help but think... there must've been multiple ways for her to have stopped this kid's death...

And yet, he still died. She didn't know what she was doing when it came to her powers, whatever they were.

'This is because... I'm not strong enough...' Her eyes cast down as tears ran down her cheeks.

******End of Flashback******

As they stepped into the Hokage office, Shisui and Yume turned toward them.

"Yo!" Kakashi waved.

Shisui smiled politely. "Damn, you're right." He directed at Kakashi. Shisui looked at his wife, "I guess I lost the bet. He's not losing it."

"It's nice to meet you. My name is Yume." The woman smiled.

"Likewise. Name's (L/n) (Y/n)." She returned the smile.

"We've met before, but in case you don't remember, not that you could forget, my name's Uchiha Shisui." He smiled broadly. Yume elbowed him in the side. "Ow..."

"So, Yume, what do you think?" Tsunade asked. (Y/n) rose a brow at the question.

"Well... I won't know until I get her in a fight." Yume responded, smirking.

"Then let's get going." Tsunade stood from her desk.

As Shisui, Yume, and Tsunade lead, Kakashi and (Y/n) trailed behind.

"Why do we have to fight...?" (Y/n) asked. "Can't I just... you know, my eyes?"

Kakashi shrugged, his eyes continuing to trail over the page of his book. "I guess we'll find out."

"Okay. I'm going to ask you, (Y/n)-chan, not to hold back." Yume turned toward her.

(Y/n) looked over to Kakashi, unsure if that was okay, who shrugged, "Don't look at me. Eyes on your enemy." He placed his book in his weapons pouch.

"Hey! I mean it, kid! Kawarimi, Kuchiyose, Kekkei Genkai... Don't hold back!"

"Okay." (Y/n) nodded. "I won't hold back."

After ten minutes of glorified dancing with Kunai, Shisui shouted, "What was that about not holding back!? My wife's gonna mop the floor with you!"

"Shisui's right!" Tsunade shouted, "You're not trying hard enough!"

"Okay, okay!" (Y/n) jumped away from Yume, trying her best to calm her heavy breathing. The water behind her rose, encasing her body in the cool liquid.

Yume decided it might be time to take the younger woman more seriously when she saw her blue eyes. "So, you've decided to get serious, huh?"

Yume took the offensive, attacking (Y/n) from her right, but as her foot made contact with (Y/n)'s side, (Y/n) didn't flinch, counter-attacking instead.

Over the last few months, (Y/n) had been training extensively, usually alone. From this, she had advanced her water 'armor' beyond what it was during the bell test or sparring with Jiraiya.

Yume flipped out of the way as (Y/n) barely nicked her shoulder with a kunai. When Yume stood fully, she looked into (Y/n)'s bright blue-ish white eyes with bright green eyes of her own.

The three spectators looked between the two, silently wondering where this was going.

'...Can this girl also control time and space...?' Shisui wondered.

'I think this will be interesting...' Kakashi eyed his former student as she made a few hand signs, 'I've never seen this power of Yume's...'

Tsunade smirked, 'These two must be related in some way... Neither knows who their parents are... I wonder...' She frowned, 'But that wouldn't be possible...'

(Y/n)'s foot hit Yume's arm, sending her into a tree. She landed quickly, but softly against the bark of the tree, and (Y/n)'s eyes widened, followed by Kakashi's as Yume easily stood from the hit, which should've affected Yume much worse.

She turned toward the tree, inspecting it curiously and surprisedly. The large tree was devoid of all bark, and when she raised her hand to feel it, it was soft, and almost spongey beneath her fingertips.

(Y/n) walked over to her, and hit the tree beside the partially demolished tree, and Yume's eyes widened further, "I've been able to do it for a while, now..." (Y/n) said, "The first time I did it... It was an accident. I was kidnapped, and thrown back into a tree, but the blow didn't do much other than knocking the wind out of me..."

Yume's eyes went back to their normal greenish color, the pattern receding, and (Y/n) followed suit.

"I guess that was enough to answer our questions." Tsunade said, landing beside them, "You guys should get some-"

"Ugh!" Both women simultaneously felt a sharp pain in their heads, Shisui catching Yume as she stumbled, and Kakashi landing beside (Y/n) for support as she began shaking. "Yume? Are you okay?" Shisui asked.

"(Y/n), what's going on?" Kakashi asked before his attention turned to Tsunade.

(Y/n) soon fell unconscious, and Kakashi caught her, before pulling her up into his arms.

Yume felt like her headache lifted soon after, "What the hell...?"

"We'd better get you two to the hospital." Tsunade said.
