Chapter 2- The Orphanage

Raven's pov

I hoisted the window by my bed open, peeking outside. Much to my luck, the edge of the roof was right above me. I felt a smirk form on my face as I realized the potential of my new discovery. Deciding to test the idea forming in my head, I climbed out onto the window sill and turned myself so my back was facing the outside. It was a dangerous thing to do, and I hoped I'd be able to turn myself to metal before I hit the ground. Not that I would die from a two story drop; I just really don't want any broken bones today.

Standing up quickly, I hurriedly grabbed the edge of the roof to keep myself from falling. I managed to pull myself up enough to swing my leg onto the roof. I pushed up with my hand and knee, rolling onto my back. I let out a breath of relief. Not only had I not fallen, but I'd found a place I could be alone. The roof was the perfect place for me to bask in the sun, and to get away from all the frills and squeals that came along with the all-girls orphanage. I sat up.

The other females living here were all annoying. I know it's a blunt and rude thing to even think about, but it's the sad truth. They've been trying to get me into a dress since the second I got here. Especially pink ones. And while I don't hate the color pink, I don't think I could ever wear anything in the color, let alone a god damn dress. It was hard to get past their grabbing hands, and to constantly brush off their pleas, but now I didn't have to. I told the girls I was fine with my clothes, but apparently they're all somewhat deaf, so they brought my desperate escape to the roof upon themselves.

I felt someone staring at me and turned to look for them. It wasn't long before my red eyes met a charcoal one. My eyes instantly narrowing with suspicion. Why is he watching me? Did the Hokage send someone to keep an eye on me? He wouldn't right? I suppose it would make sense. I mean, for all he knows, I could be a spy. I'm obviously not, but even if I told him that, that wouldn't stop him from being suspicious. I just want to know why this person let themselves get caught. Surely the Hokage didn't require then to burn holes into the side of my head.

I examined him. He's got a headband, which means he's a ninja. Not only that, but he's reading a book. It's small and orange. He has a rather relaxed posture compared to most ninja I'd seen, and he's got silver hair that seems to defy the laws of gravity. I decided to do what he did to me; I stared. I stared until he seemed to find it awkward. Much to my pleasure and triumph, the man looked away and continued walking. Raven: one. Random man: zero.

I smiled to myself at the sense of satisfaction I derived from the small win. I don't need stalkers, especially not old men stalkers. I mean, sure, he looked rather young and all. But his hair color said otherwise, and a majority of his face was covered in a really creepy mask. I suppose it's possible he was born with silver hair. What a terrible curse to have that color hair all your life. I wonder if the guy got bullied for it at all.

Kakashi's pov

I walked down the street reading my Icha Icha Paradise, and just enjoying the breeze. It was a nice day for a walk, and for once, I wasn't piled high for missions. I knew my workload would only decrease from here. I was going to become a sensei again. Or that's what was supposed to happen. Only so far, I haven't really had any luck with genin. All of them have been incompetent, and I can't fix stupid.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a window open. I diverted my attention to where the movement had come from. It was the girl's orphanage, the one that desperately needed work. I watched a girl's head pop out of the window. She looked up at jutting edge of the roof with a smirk. It was when she stepped out onto the window sill, presumably to get to the roof, that I really took the chance to observe her.

Her black hair went a bit past her shoulders, her bangs braided and pinned to the side. As she tried to decide the best way to get on to the rooftop, I got a good look at her eyes. They were pretty unique as far as eyes go, red with a bit of orange mixed in, maybe. She wasn't wearing some frilly pink dress like one might expect. In fact, she was pretty much wearing the opposite. She looked like a pirate or an adventurer, if nothing else.

She wore a navy blue sleeveless turtleneck top, which showed me that she had some arm muscle built up. Not much, but more than your average orphan. She wore some sort of black jeans, although they seemed more stretchy. They were slimmer, too, tucking into her brown boots. They looked a little worse for wear. They'd definitely seen better days, Kakashi mused to himself.

She turned so that her back was facing me, swiftly standing up at an angle. Her hand shot out, grasping at the edge of the roof before she could fall. I watched as she hoisted herself up, one of her legs swinging up and onto the roof as she climbed as though it were nothing new or challenging. She didn't even seem winded by her short ascent.

This caught my attention, perking up my interest. She definitely wasn't a ninja, but with her reasonable upper body strength and okay-speed, she was definitely cut out to be one. Most kids that aren't ninja trained probably wouldn't have noticed the roof ledge either. She is a bit short, especially for genin age. Not that height matters. Besides, I don't think she's in the academy anyway. There's really no way for me to be sure without asking her or the Hokage, or maybe one of the teachers. If they'd even disclose that information to me.

Our gaze's connected, and her eyes narrowed with suspicion. She observed me with clear calculation, taking in everything about me. She assessed me in a way that only made my curiosity grow. I looked away despite my overwhelming urge to go introduce myself to the odd child. Maybe I'll pay the orphanage a visit soon, or inform the Hokage of her potential.

I wonder where she came from, though, or if she's always been there.

Raven's pov

I swung back into the room to see that it was empty. I felt my shoulders slump with relief as my eyes swept over the dwelling. The room wasn't as wide as it was long. Seven beds were lined up against one of the barren walls. The room's lack of decor was depressing, but I knew that if they were to add some, it'd be way too girl for my tastes anyway.

Each bed had bright pink bedding that made me grimace and sort of want to puke. Hopefully the Hokage trusts me soon so I can get the hell out of this place. I haven't even been here a full twenty-four hours and I already can't stand it. The smell of perfume fluctuates between strong and faded wherever you go. The bathroom sinks are piled high with beauty products that seemed to be drug-store grade, and everything is pink.

The door to the room swung open, hitting the wall with a loud bang that startled me from my thoughts. I stared in slight horror as the girls all flooded in, chatting animatedly with each other. One of them spotted me before I could dart for the window. Her entire face lit up. "Look, Raven's back!" She announced with an annoyingly high-pitched squeal hurt my ears. She darted over.

Holding back the urge to burn them all alive where they stood, I leveled them with a bored gaze. A girl I still don't know the name of stepped forward. "Come on, just try on one. Just one!" She held up a pink dress that looked far too tight to breath in, and too poofy move in. Where did that even come from? She didn't have time to dig it up which means they had it waiting... that's some creepy shit.

"No thank you." I grimaced shamelessly at the heels on of my fellow orphans help hopefully. The lit up faces around me all seemed to drop at the exact same time. "But why?" The dress girl whined. The others seemed to think it was okay to join in, and began to whine too. I recoiled immediately, my eyes darting left and right. I need to think of something fast before one of them starts to cry, or worse, before they force me into it.

"Because it would look so much better on one of you!" I used as much enthusiasm as I could muster. They gave me curious looks, going silent. I continued. "Pink just isn't my color. It doesn't look good on me." I turned to a random girl I don't remember ever seeing, offering a smile. "But you, however, look like a queen... no, a goddess in pink!"

Normal teenagers like compliments, right?

"Raven, what's my color." Oh boy, another random girl. Just what I need in my life today. I swear to God more of them spawn every second. "A... uh, lighter shade of... pink." She seemed to take my words seriously, nodding with a firm look. "And me?" Oh my God there's another. "Dark purple and pink." It was just coming out at this point. "You guys would all look so... dazzling in pinks and purples. I bet all the guys would swoon over you."

Hook line and sink her.

Giggles erupted in the small mob of pink fiends, and they all ran to their beds. They slid out their chests full of clothing so color it hurt my eyes, excitedly digging through them. They began to chat more about outfit ideas, and that elicited a sigh of relief from me. Their attention was shifted away from me, the new girl, for now. I was safe.

"You dodged that bullet like a pro." Igneous complimented, scratching the side of his neck. A bit of smoke escaped his nostrils. "Who knew you were so adept at flattery." Kuro said. He sounded somewhat proud of me, which I guess is better than nothing. Especially coming from him. I let a small smile slip onto my face at their words.

"Yeah." I whispered. "Who knew."
