0: Prologue

A full moon. A cloudless sky. A cool, evening breeze.

Perfect night for the driver to take two little girls back to their home.

The traffic that had clogged the road for five hours straight had lessened immensely, to the point that the stretch of road in front of them was empty.

The twins talked and giggled in the back seat.

He looked in the rear view mirror and smiled. Then he frowned suddenly as something caught his eye.

A black car had come out of nowhere and was tailing them.

He changed lanes and the car changed lanes. He sped up and it also sped up.

Before he could do anything else, another car overtook him.

The car rushed ahead, before turning and stopping, obstructing the way.

The girls shrieked as the driver screeched the car to a halt.

They screamed even more when the doors of the car in front of them opened, and gun-carrying men in black ski masks came out.

A few more stepped out of the car that had been tailing them.

"Get out!" one of the men shouted, hitting the side of their car with his gun.

"Girls, please, let's get down," the driver pleaded.

The girls stayed put for a few minutes, each waiting for the other to move first.

Then some of the robbers opened the door and carried them out, sitting them on the deserted road beside the driver.

"How much money do you have in there?" the supposed leader of the gang asked.

   "N-not m-much," the driver stammered.

The leader turned to face the car, which some of the robbers were ransacking.

"Call your parents," the driver whispered to one of the twins.

She felt in her pockets for the phone she shared with her sister.

Looking at the turned back of the gang leader, the driver made a nasty and risky decision. One he wouldn't live long enough to regret.

He rose slowly and quietly off the ground and attempted to hit the man.

"Boss! Behind you!" one of the others shouted.

The leader whisked round and swifty released two bullets from the pistol he carried.

One burst through the side of the driver's head.

The second made a bloody hole in the chest of one of the twins, causing the other to release a gut-wrenching scream.

"Uncle Sam! Tochi!!!" she yelled, crawling over the driver's dead body to her sister.

Tochi's chest rose once and fell.

The other twin placed her index finger near the wounded girl's nose.

She felt a breath and then nothing more.

She went pale as she felt her sister's body lose heat and stiffen.

She kept down, the shock taking her breath away.

No words escaped her lips.

No tears worked down her face.

Her sister, her own twin sister was dead. She might as well be the one sprawled on the road with a hole in her chest.

She looked round at the robbers.

The couldn't seem to care less and were stealing what they could from the car.

Only one of them looked visible shocked at the deaths he had witnessed; he was coughing and stared at the dead bodies with wide eyes.

There was no one watching her.

Praying for God to either spare her or let her join her sister peacefully, she got up and started running.

"Hey!" one of them shouted.

"Acid, after her!" the leader ordered.

Turning slightly, she saw the shocked man running towards her.

Her pace increased as she pounded her feet mercilessly against the asphalt with no idea where she was going.

She tripped on a speed breaker and the man tripped too, his gun falling and sliding near her.

Her knees were bleeding and she was too shocked to move.

The man looked her up and down with a wolfish grin on his face.

"Come on little girl, I won't hurt you," he said in a gravelly voice.

She inched backwards a little as he crawled towards her, pushing himself off the ground.

She glanced round wildly, looking for something- anything- to defend herself.

Her eyes fell on the gun and she gripped it with trembling fingers.

"Put that down!" he said, lunging at her.

She closed her eyes and squeezed the trigger, hearing a loud pop, a groan and a thud.

Opening her eyes, she screamed as she saw blood looking round the man from where she had shot him in the abdomen.

She hastingly dropped the gun and felt again for her phone.

Finding it, she placed a call to her parents, her voice quaking as she explained everything.

She got up, ran again and hid in some bushes.

                    ---------------------
About fifteen minutes later, the robbers were done loading their stolen bounty and were ready to go.

The next thing they heard were the combined sirens of a police car and a and ambulance.

They scrambled in a bid to escape but it was too late.

The police bundled them up and went in search of the girl.

They wandered round a few minutes, lighting up dark areas with their flash lights till they found her.

She stood up and sheilded her eyes from the glee of the powerful flash lights.

"We found her," a police said, speaking into a device. He turned to the girl. "Come with us, your parents are waiting."

Her eyebrows furrowed as she stepped out of the bushes.

Since when were the Nigerian police so nice and organized?

  Oh, yeah.....her parents were rich.

She rushed to meet her parents, pushing through a small crowd of symphatetic drivers and passengers that had stopped, come down from their cars and buses and gathered round.

Her mother was sitting on the ground, clutching wildly at her hair, her eyes pouring rivers down her face.

Her father was kneeling, his face pale and his entire body shaking slightly from shock.

She touched her mother's arm from behind, causing her to turn round confusedly.

"Oh, Jesus Christ!Baby girl.... are you okay?" her mother said, wrapping her in a tight embrace.

"Mummy....Tochi....I...shot that man-"

"Shhh! I know, I know."

She turned to her father and he gave her an equally strong hug.

"Did they hurt you? I swear, I'm going to kill those bloody bastards!"

Her mother joined the hugged and they remained that way for some time.

"Let's get you to the hospital," her mother said, pulling away from the hug.

She nodded, knowing fully well that it was code for: Let's get your sister's body to the morgue.

The paramedics had strapped the man she'd shot and placed an oxygen mask on his face. He was then wheeled into the ambulance.

Beside him were the two dead bodies; strapped down and covered in white sheets.

The family got into their other car and followed the ambulance.

              --------------------
At the hospital, a nurse cleaned and bandaged the girl's knees.

She sat with her parents, waiting for news on the man she had shot.

Her father had paid the emergency bill for him once her sister's body had been placed in the morgue.

Despite everything, she prayed silently that he would live.

If not, she would be a murderer....
