Chapter 40: The End?
Despite his injured arm, Bruce stood strong and held a large part of the building that had fallen on top of him.
"I can't breathe! I can't breathe! I can't breathe...!" Rocket's cries became quieter as the rubble got heavier from its place across Rocket's legs and stomach. He panicked as he looked around once he finally realised everything that was going on around him. "(Y/N)..." He whispered. He frantically scanned the area. "(Y/N)!" He screamed. (Y/N), where are ya?!" He struggled to yell.
"I'm here, Rocket! Don't move!" (Y/N) yelled back to him while she pushed several boulders, the size of watermelons, off her body. She had used her wings to protect herself from the falling debris and was now about ten metres away from Rocket and Rhodes.
"Canopy, canopy, canopy!" Rhodes gasped. His War Machine suit disassembled and Rhodes climbed out of the open suit and crawled over to Rocket.
"Rhodey, Rocket, (Y/N), get out of here!" Bruce yelled as he stayed in his position underneath the falling rubble.
"Let me up! Let me up!" Rocket cried desperately as Rhodes grabbed a long metal pole and stuck it under the debris that held Rocket down. "Come on!" Rocket pleaded. Rhodes leaned on the pole to lift up the debris. Rocket scurried out before he and Rhodes panted as they laid their backs on the ground. (Y/N) joined them as she fell to her knees between the two teammates.
"Rhodey!" Bruce screamed as the rubble became too heavy to hold. The three of them looked up to their green friend as water rushed down towards them and pushed them further down, deeper under the debris.

Ant-Man was in his tiny form as he climbed out of a pile of dirt and rocks.
"Mayday, Mayday! Does anybody copy? We're on the lower level. It's flooding!" Rhodes said through a small transmitter he kept on his normal clothes at all times.
"What? What?" Ant-Man stuttered.
"We are drowning! Does anybody copy?! Mayday!" Rhodes continued.
"Wait! I'm here!" Ant-Man confirmed. "I'm here! Can you hear me?!"

As Iron Man, Captain America and Thor battled Thanos on the surface, Banner stayed still while he held up the crumbling debris. The water around him, Rhodes, Rocket and (Y/N), rose up to their necks.
"See you on the other side, man." Rhodes said to Rocket, who struggled to stay afloat next to him. (Y/N) was on the other side of Rocket as she desperately clutched a metal pole that stuck out of the large pieces of rubble above them, to stop her drenched wings from dragging her under the water. The four companions panted and cried, as they'd rather perish in battle against Thanos than drown under the ground he walked on.
Rocket looked to (Y/N), his fur was as drenched as her wings. The couple locked eyes and time froze. They only just got engaged, it couldn't end like this! They had their whole lives to live! Tears and dirty water mixed on their faces. Despite his fear, Rocket tried to swim slightly closer to his fiancé. (Y/N) noticed and reached out for him while her right hand gripped the pole. As soon as their hands made contact, (Y/N) pulled Rocket into her and hugged him close while she tried to hold him above the water for as long as she could.
When the water rose so high that they had barely any air to take in, Rocket wrapped his arm around (Y/N)'s shoulder and neck to keep his face at the same level as her. They stared at each other as the water reached their chins. They both took a deep breath and kissed as tears fell mercilessly. Once the water reached just below their noses, they separated and the panic returned.
"I love y-you..." (Y/N) struggled to say over the water.
"I love you t-!" Rocket replied just before the water rose above each of their heads.
"Hang on! I'm coming!" Ant-Man called out as he rode a beer bottle cap on rushing water towards the four drowning heroes. He jumped off the cap, jumped off a rock and leaped off the rubber end of a pencil into the water.

Captain America panted as he laid on his back. His shield was destroyed, split in half. He rolled onto his stomach and grunted as he tried to stand up, pleading that he could fight one last time.
"In all my years of conquest... violence... slaughter... it was never personal." Thanos announced as the rest of his army trotted closer to where Captain America had fought alongside two of his closest friends, as well as showing his worth by lifting Thor's hammer, Mjölnir. "But I'll tell you now, what I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet... I'm gonna enjoy it... very, very much." Four of Thanos's deadliest henchmen beamed down from the ship, The Sanctuary II. All different species of aliens, some were soldiers while others looked more so similar to Earth's animals rather than people, ran away from the ship and closer to Thanos.
Steve's breathing had stabled. He went from his position on his hands and knees and rose off the ground. He stood tall and faced Thanos and his army. He looked to his left arm and prepared to adjust the strap of his shield. With a grunt of pain and determination, he tightened the strap over his already injured, and bleeding arm. Steve limped a few steps forward before he heard static come through a tiny transmitter on the right side of his helmet.
"Hey, Cap, you read me?" A male voice asked faintly. Captain America's breath quickened. His eyes stared at the sky, as he froze. Was he dreaming? Was he hallucinating? Was he dead? Steve was sure that this was real. And although he begged it to be true, it was just so hard to believe. "Cap, it's Sam. Can you hear me?" The voice returned. Steve brought his trembling hand to the right side of his head and hovered it over the small transmitter. The next words spoken by his friend, Sam, proved that this was not a dream. It was not a hallucination. And he was definitely not dead.
"On your left."
