Chapter 37: The Time Heist
A/N
Okay, so in the movie with the scene of Thor and Rocket in Asgard, I thought that moment when Rocket's asking Thor to help him get his family back was really sweet. I didn't make (Y/N) intervene that much because I just think that scene's really nice as it is :)
(Hope that makes sense)
The heroes strutted towards the 'Time Machine' in red and white suits, made specifically for this mission. "Five years ago, we lost." Steve began. "All of us. We lost friends. We lost family. We lost a part of ourselves. Today, we have a chance to take it all back. You know your teams. You know your missions. Get the stones. Get them back. One-round trip each. No mistakes... no do-overs. Most of us are going somewhere we know. That doesn't mean we should know what to expect. Be careful. Look out for each other. This is the fight of our lives... and we're gonna win." Steve tried to assure as he looked to Tony on his right. "Whatever it takes. Good luck."
"He's pretty good at that." Rocket mentioned.
"Right?" Scott asked rhetorically, as if he was glad somebody else finally noticed.
"All right. You heard the man. Stroke those keys, Jolly Green." Tony called out to Banner, who stood by a control panel for the Time Machine.
"Trackers engaged." Banner noted. Meanwhile, Clint held a tiny model of the Milano in his palm.
"You promise to bring that back in one piece, right?" Rocket asked with his arms crossed, stressed at the fact that Quill's ship could get damaged on this mission.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, I'll do my best." Clint replied hurriedly with a half-hearted smile.
"As promises go, that was pretty lame." Rocket mumbled towards (Y/N).
"Eh, I'm sure it'll be fine. If not, then we'll blame it on Tony when Quill gets back." (Y/N) shrugged as Rocket snickered. Each hero stood in their own spot on the platform, in a circle formation.
"See you in a minute." Natasha smirked to Steve. He smiled back as the machine began to power up. Everyone put their nanotech helmets on, now having their entire bodies covered, apart from Rocket's tail and (Y/N)'s wings. The platform lit up bright orange and everyone was sucked into the vortex. They flew at lightning speed and drifted off in different directions to different places. Tony, Steve, Banner and Scott transported to New York, 2012. Clint, Natasha, Rhodes and Nebula arrived on Morag, 2014, before Natasha and Clint went away to Vormir, 2014. And Thor, Rocket and (Y/N) made their way to Asgard, 2013. It was quiet in Thor's old home. Voices echoed throughout the stone castle, one in particular caught Thor's attention. Jane.
"Oh, there's Jane." He gasped.
"All right." Rocket jumped off the stone ledge. "Here's the deal, Tubby. (Y/N)'s gonna stand watch while you charm Jane, and I'm gonna poke her with this thing and extract the Reality Stone, and get gone lickety-split." He explained. But Thor just held up his finger as if saying 'one second'.
"I'll be right back, okay? There's a- the wine cellar is just down there. My father used to have this huge barrel of Aakonian ale. I'll see if the scullery has a few to-go cups." Thor tried to persuade the two of them as he walked towards the wine cellar.
"Hey. Hey! Aren't you drunk enough already?" Rocket growled. A door opened somewhere in the large palace which caused an echo throughout Thor's old home. A few voices were heard as Thor looked to where they came from. His mouth was agape as he caught sight of his mother and a few of her servants (were they servants?).
"Who's the fancy broad?" Rocket asked as he jumped up onto a large stone so he was eye-level with Thor and (Y/N).
"That's my mother... She dies today." Thor realised.
"That's today?" (Y/N) asked sympathetically. Thor started to breathe heavily and swayed a little.
"I can't do this. I can't do this. I shouldn't be here. I should've come." Thor rambled.
"Thor, calm down." (Y/N) said firmly but carefully.
"It's a bad idea!"
"Come here." Rocket ordered as he pointed to the ground in front of him.
"No, no, no, I think I'm- I'm having a panic attack." Thor flailed his hands.
"Come here. Right here." Rocket continued.
"I shouldn't be here. This is bad-" Thor stopped as Rocket placed a hard slap across his face.
"You think you're the only one who lost people? What do you think we're doing here? Me and (Y/N) lost the only family we've ever had. Quill, Groot, Drax, the chick with the antenna, all gone. I get you miss your mum... but she's gone. Really gone. And there are plenty of people who are only kind of gone. And you get help them." Thor nodded slightly. "So, is it too much to ask that you brush the crumbs out of your beard, make schmoopy talk to Pretty Pants, and when she's not looking, suck out the Infinity Stone, and help us get our family back?"
Thor exhaled. "Okay." He nodded.
"Are you crying?"
"...No..." Thor sobbed. "...Yes. I feel like I'm losing it."
"Get it together! You can do this." Rocket assured. "You can do this." Thor then breathed in deeply. "All right?"
"Yes, I can."
"Good." Rocket jumped off the stone and walked towards Jane's room.
"I can do this. I can do this... I can't do this." Thor failed to hype himself up before he walked the other way.
"Nicely done." (Y/N) complimented Rocket.
"Natural talent." He shrugged smugly. "All right, heartbreaker, she's alone." He said to Thor. This is our shot." He and (Y/N) turned around and saw Thor had went the other way, nowhere to be found.
"Thor?" (Y/N) asked.
"Thor!" Rocket called out before he groaned in frustration. "Great. What now?"
"Well, we can't go looking for him, we'll get caught." (Y/N) pointed out. Rocket nodded and looked back to the room where Jane rested. "How about I distract her?" (Y/N) suggested. "Then you get the stone."
"No way, she'll call the guards when she doesn't know who you are." Rocket noted.
"That could be the distraction? I'll just fly away if I have to." (Y/N) reminded. Rocket thought about it for a moment. It could work. It would definitely surprise Jane long enough for Rocket to take the Reality Stone.
"Okay. But if she calls for the guards, we're out of there." Rocket ordered gruffly.
"You know, you're cute when you're protective." (Y/N) teased with a casual tone as she walked past Rocket.
"I'm not trying to be cute." Rocket grumbled as he followed her.
"Well, you're failing horribly." (Y/N) retorted. Rocket smirked and ran up to the door and peeked in. Jane was asleep, perfect. They both entered the room silently. (Y/N) stood by the door while Rocket went behind where Jane was sleeping. She flinched, the two froze. Jane slowly sat up and blinked a couple times before her eyes widened at (Y/N).
"W-who-? Why are you-?" Jane stuttered. (Y/N) raised her wings in a friendly manner with her hands up.
"I-it's okay, Thor sent me." She thought quickly.
"For what?" Jane asked as she slowly stood up.
"Uh... he just wanted me to... ask you if you needed anything?" (Y/N) asked with a sheepish smile as Jane now stood before her, slightly shorter.
"There was literally someone who asked me the same thing and they just left. No, I don't need anything." Jane answered, a little annoyed.
"Oh, great-" (Y/N) replied before Jane stopped her.
"Thor never mentioned you." She noted.
"Well, he-"
"And I think I would've remembered if he talked about someone with wings." Jane continued as she took a couple steps forward.
"I really thought this would've gone more smoothly." (Y/N) admitted.
"What- AHH!" Jane asked before she yelped in pain and spun around as Rocket took the small object out of Jane's thigh. A red substance was now captured in the machine. Jane turned back around as (Y/N) and Rocket ran towards the door. The guards must have heard the scream before Rocket and (Y/N) heard the running footsteps head for them. Guards immediately showed themselves from around the corner and chased the two intruders. As Rocket ran on all fours and the guards gained on him, he yelled out to Thor.
"Thor! We got it!" The guards began to close the distance between their group and the two in front of them. (Y/N) grabbed Rocket and jumped into the air.
"Get that rabbit and bird!" One of the guards demanded. As (Y/N) flew with Rocket, they managed to find the room that Thor and his mother were speaking in. They both panted as they landed and Rocket walked over to Thor as (Y/N) caught her breath.
"Hi." He said as the lady smiled and waved slightly. "You must be Mum. We got the thing. Come on, we gotta move."
"Oh, I wish we had more time." Thor said to Frigga. (Y/N) was now next to Rocket.
"No, this was a gift." She assured as she held his hands. "Now you go and be the man you're meant to be."
"I love you, mum." Thor whispered.
"I love you." They hugged tightly, as they knew they'd never be able to hug again. And that realisation hit Thor the most. "And eat a salad." Frigga begged politely.
"Come on, we gotta go." (Y/N) said nicely but hastily.
"Goodbye." Figga whispered.
"Three." Rocket counted down. "Two."
"No, wait!" Thor stopped him before he held his hand to the sky out an open window on his left. But nothing happened.
"What am I looking at?" Rocket asked, confused.
"Oh, sometimes it takes a second." Frigga explained. Thor opened his left eye and peeked out the window. A sound, an indescribable sound, became louder in a second. Thor gasped as his old hammer, Mjollnir, flew into his hand. He laughed as he twisted the hammer and looked at Rocket.
"I'm still worthy." He smiled.
"Oh, boy." Rocket shook his head as he pressed a button on his left forearm and his, (Y/N)'s, and Thor's white suits appeared.
"Goodbye, Mum." Thor nodded.
"Goodbye." His mother mouthed back.
