Chapter 29: Tony's Breakdown
"It's been 23 days since Thanos came to Earth." Rhodes mentioned.
"World governments are in pieces. The parts that are still working are trying to take a census and it looks like he did... He did exactly what he said he was gonna do. Thanos wiped out 50% of all living creatures." Natasha explained.
"Where is he now? Where?" Tony asked.
"We don't know." Steve revealed. "He just opened a portal and walked through." Tony sighed and turn slightly in his wheelchair towards Thor, who sat aside, staring at the ground.
"What's wrong with him?" He asked.
"Oh, he's pissed." Someone answered from the other side of room. Tony turned and saw (Y/N), then the racoon who she sat next to. "He thinks he failed. Which, of course, he did but there's a lot of that going around, ain't there?"
"Honestly, until this exact second, I thought you were a build-a-bear." Tony admitted.
"Maybe I am." Rocket added.
"Wait- is that-?" Tony faced (Y/N), which caused her to nod, knowing what Tony's question would be.
"We've been hunting Thanos for three weeks now. Deep space scans... and satellites, and we got nothing. Tony, you fought him." Steve mentioned.
"Who told you that?" Tony asked, sounding like he was genuinely confused, but he only continued his sentence. "I didn't fight him. No, he wiped my faced with a planet while the Bleecker Street magician gave away the store. (I thought it was 'stone' but he literally says 'store') That's what happened. There was no fight, 'cause he's not beatable."
"Did he give you any clues, any coordinates, anything?" Steve asked, desperate to find something. Tony only pointed to his head sputtered, an indication that he knew nothing.
"I saw this coming a few years back. I had a vision, I didn't wanna believe. Thought I was dreaming."
"Tony, I'm gonna need you to focus-"
"And I needed you. As in, past tense. That trumps what you need. It's too late, buddy. Sorry. You know what I need?" Tony asked as he weakly stood up and also knocking over a bowl and spoon. "I need a shave. And I believe I remember telling all youse..." He said as he ripped the needle out of his forearm.
"Tony, Tony!" Rhodes pleaded.
"...alive and otherwise, that what we needed was a suit of armour around the world. Remember that? Whether it impacted our precious freedoms or not. That's what we needed."
"Well, that didn't work out, did it?" Steve asked rhetorically.
"I said we'd lose. You said, 'we'll do that together too'. And guess what, Cap? We lost. And you weren't there. But that's what we do, right? Our best work after the fact?" Tony asked as he stumbled, Rhodes stood beside him. "We're the 'Avengers'? We're the 'Avengers', not the 'Pre-vengers'?"
"Okay." Rhodes agreed.
"Right?"
"You made your point. Just sit down, okay?"
"Okay. No, no, here's my point. You know what? She's great by the way." Tony complimented as he pointed to Carol, AKA Captain Marvel.
"Tony, you're sick. Sit down."
"We need you. You're new blood. Bunch of tired old mules. I got nothing for you, Cap. I got no coordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options. Zero. Zip. Nada. No trust, liar." Tony said before he removed his arc reactor off his chest and placed it in Steve's hand. "Here, take this. You find him, you put that on... you hide." He stumbled to his knees.
"Tony!" Steve exclaimed as he, Natasha and Coral stood there, ready to help him.
"I'm fine." Tony said firmly. "Let me..." He fell to the ground, unconscious.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Nebula, (Y/N) and Rocket sat in another room while Tony was put in a bed to recover. His arc reactor was placed back where it's supposed to be and Pepper sat beside the bed as she waited to her Iron Man to come to. (Y/N) sat in a chair at the table in the middle of the room with her wings rested behind her while Nebula stood to side and leaned on a wall. Rocket walked over to the table as he spoke to (Y/N).
"How's Nebula?" He asked as he sat on the table with his blank voice the same as usual, yet deep down he hoped Nebula was okay.
"Same as always, but she's still sad about Gamora." (Y/N) answered, empathising with the cyborg for she too, missed everyone that had become victim to Thanos's snap, especially Gamora.
"She disappeared too, huh?" Rocket asked, already thinking the answer would be yes, but he was wrong.
(Y/N) sighed, "...no. Thanos traded her on Vormir for the soul stone. Quill went insane."
"Shit... Apart from that, how was it in the ship with her and Stark?" Rocket asked, an effort the lighten the mood, even a little.
"It wasn't bad. Tony taught us a few games, we kept the ship intact, then a few weeks later that glowing lady brought the ship here. What about you, on Earth with these guys?"
"Eh, it was bearable." Rocket admitted, a laugh escaped (Y/N). "They found it weird to talk to a baboon-"
"Racoon."
"Racoon, sure. They were weirded out at first but with everything going on, they got used to it pretty quickly." Rocket explained before he a took a pause for a few seconds. He placed a hand on top of (Y/N)'s and she looked at him. It felt like if they could've just stopped everything and had a few minutes, no, a few seconds of doing nothing but be in each others presence, their spirits would be lightened just a little. Rocket wanted to put everything aside and tell his girlfriend how much he truly loved and cherished her, but he knew the things that stopped him. His ego, badass persona, and the feeling of the other people in the building that would've probably found it a little odd. In that moment he knew one day, very soon, he'd take Thor's advice and show how much he appreciated (Y/N). He needed to. The moment was cut off by Nebula interrupting the Avenger's conversation.
"Don't bother." Everyone's attention was on her. "I can tell you where Thanos is."
