Chapter 20

Oliver

Awkward little shit, my best friend Peter. I watch from an upper balcony of the library, where Minnie has sent me to fetch her a book she's been waiting for as Pete and Jamie repeatedly glance at each other and then do something I can only describe as the ocular equivalent of running screaming in the other direction.

She's a good kid, she really is.

"You piece of shit!" Minnie screamed, winging a piece of fried chicken at me from across the kitchen as I came through the door.

"Min, what the hell?" I yelled as buffalo sauce splattered across my white tee shirt. "It's not our anniversary, I forgot that last month, right?" I grinned, and she continued scowling.

"She's a goddamned child," Minnie's screams were growing shriller by the minute.

"Minnie, what do you want me to do? It's one kid or the rest of the fucking world! One kid or a few billion kids!"

"You didn't even try to find another solution, Oliver. That's the point."

"You think I didn't try? You think I just volunteered to kill the kid off?" Now I was screaming, too.

"Well, I didn't see your fat ass doing much during the whole thing."

"You know what, I don't need this right now. I'm leaving." I grabbed my leather jacket, put down always seconds ago, and stormed out.

I had almost slammed the door when I heard: "I still love you."

Regardless, I had more than a few drinks that night
