41. Masquerade Balls and Ending Hopes
"Addelyn!" I heard an excited voice call on my way to meeting Cole.
I turned around and met with Cole's mother who walked towards me with a huge grin.
"Hi, Mrs. Hamilton!" I greeted with a fake smile etched on my face.
"Oh my god! Look at you. You're gorgeous, dear!" She gushed, "Cole is a very lucky boy!"
"Cole?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"He said that you were his date. Aren't you?" She asked and I gave her a confused look.
"Of course, he was lying." She said, shaking her in disappointment, "He took half a minute to stutter your name."
"Oh no, he wasn't lying. I am his date." I said, still being confused on what was happening, "He can get a little nervous when it comes to girls."
"Right, my bad." She laughed, "I was so worried that he was with the help's daughter again. That boy keeps sneaking around with her. She's such a bad influence! I swear I wouldn't have kept her around if I didn't feel bad for her and her mother. They have no place to go."
"Don't worry. I'll keep him on track tonight." I said and she smiled.
"Oh, there he comes now." She said, looking at someone behind me and my head snapped to Cole who walked towards us hastily.
"Mom, you're talking to Addy. Addy, you're talking to my mom." He said before letting out a nervous chuckle.
"Yes, Cole. We are aware of that." I said, rolling my eyes.
"Right! Umm...... let's dance!" He said, grabbing my hand and pulling me away from his mom.
Once we reached the center of the hall, he looked around the place awkwardly as if he just saw a real-life unicorn.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"I don't know how to dance." He said.
"You were the one who suggested dancing." I shrugged.
"I was just trying to get you away from my mom." He said and I let an exasperated sigh before grabbing his arms and wrapping them around my waist. I circled my hands around his neck and crashed my body against his, making him take a step back from me.
"Would you relax?" I asked and he awkwardly nodded his head before stepping a little closer to me.
"How do we do this?" He asked and I rolled my eyes.
"Just go with the flow, Cole. We're not break dancing." I rolled my eyes.
"I don't know how to go with the flow!" He exclaimed and I sighed.
"Just have some confidence. I'm always confident in what I do and thus I'm the best at what I do." I said smugly.
"Aren't you very modest?" He said.
"I know."
"I was being sarcastic."
"Sarcasm denied." I said, rolling my eyes.
"So....... I'm your date?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well.... I just– it's just........ I–"
"Just tell me already." I said, rolling my eyes.
"I thought that my parents were going for a meeting." He said.
"Okay?"
"So, I brought Terra along with me." He said.
"Yes, I already met the witch." I said and he narrowed his eyes at me. I huffed and gestured him to continue.
"Turns out the meeting was only for my dad and the reason my mom was with him was because he dropped her off here."
"Okay, so?"
"She checked the guest list to see if I had arrived here on time and she saw that I brought a plus one. So, I had to lie and say that I brought you as my date."
"Your mom is weird sometimes." I said.
"Right, sometimes." He snorted.
I sighed and stepped even closer to him before resting my head on his chest, making him freeze in surprise.
"Oh relax," I said, hugging his neck tighter.
I slowly moved with him following my steps and soon, we were swaying along the beat of the music.
"This isn't so bad, is it?" I asked, lifting my head to look at him.
"No, it isn't." He said and I smiled at him before resting my head on his chest again.
My smile fell when I spotted a figure in the distance. Blake stared at us with an agonizing look on his face as he slowly sipped on a glass of champagne. As soon as our eyes locked, he quickly gulped down the drink before keeping it on the table and walking out of the ball.
"Do you want to go after him?" Cole asked and I looked up at him.
"It's fine. I'll just tell my mom that you went to the washroom." He said and I smiled at him before placing a kiss on his cheek. I turned around and followed the path Blake took until I found him standing in the same spot I left him before finding Cole.
I walked up to him and stood beside him before leaning my head against his shoulder. He looked at me for a second before wrapping his arms around me, pulling me closer to him.
He didn't say anything and neither did I. We just stood there like that for a couple of minutes before he turned me towards him.
"I didn't give you your shoes yet." He said.
"What shoes?" I asked.
"The six pairs you wanted." He said and I grinned at him.
"You have them now?" I asked and he nodded his head before taking my hand in his.
He led me to his limo and his driver got out of the car before opening the backdoor for us. Blake leaned in a brought out a few shopping bags before taking out the boxes and opening them to reveal six pairs of shoes.
"Oh my god! They're gorgeous!" I gushed, looking at them.
"Only the best for you." He said and I giggled before sitting down on the seat of his limo and kicking off my shoes.
"I want to wear one of them now." I said and he looked at the shoes before picking one out.
"I think you'll like this the best." He said and I excitedly nodded as he chuckled before slipping it on my feet.
He looked up at me and smiled before grabbing both my hands in his and placing a kiss on them.
"Your legs look hot." He smirked.
"I know they do." I said and he chuckled as he pulled me up from the seat before snaking his arms around my waist.
"I wanted to dance with you." He whispered.
"You already did, Blake."
"That wasn't enough." He said, "Also, I didn't like you dancing with Cole."
"Why not?"
"Does there have to be a reason?" He asked and I pulled away from hum before looking him in the eye.
"You can't say that." I said, shaking my head and he clenched his jaw as he lowered his gaze to the ground.
I huffed and walked towards the railing and leaned against it, facing the sea. I heard Blake's footsteps behind me before he stood next to me, mimicking my position.
"Blake," I called and he looked up at me.
"I think we need some more space away from each other." I said.
"No, I can't do that anymore, Lynne. You didn't talk to me for an entire week and that was hard enough." He said tiredly.
"No, not like that. We can still talk and hang out. I just don't think that we should spend much time alone. We could still see each other when we're around other people. But I don't want you coming to my house anymore." I said, even though it killed me to put so much distance between us.
"B-But why?" He asked.
"I need that Blake." I said and the look on his face broke my heart but I knew I had to this if I wanted to stop feeling this way about him.
"I don't know if I could do that, Lynne." He said.
"It's not going to be that hard, Blake. We'll get used to the distance." I said.
"I don't want to get used to it." He said and I shook my head.
"Please, Blake. You won't even miss this anymore. You want to be with Terra and when that happens, you're going to be glad that we ended this." I said and he looked at me with glistening eyes.
"Lynn–"
"Please, don't try to talk me out of it." I said and he lowered his head.
I grabbed his face and placed a lingering kiss on his cheek before pulling him into a tight hug.
"I'll always be your best friend, Blake." I said, holding him as tightly as possible.
"Nothing more." I whispered more to myself before I pulled away.
"I should go back inside. Cole's waiting." I said and he nodded, keeping his gaze trained on the ground.
I gave him a small smile and walked back inside where I saw Cole in a heated a discussion with his mom.
"Why is she here though?" I heard Mrs. Hamilton ask as I approached them
"Umm.... I- She...... c-catering." He said and I gave him a weird look.
"I'm your mother, Cole. I know when you're lying." She huffed, "Besides, I don't see her wearing any catering outfits."
"No, she's here as Blake's date." I lied, stepping into the conversation.
"Right. I've lately noticed something between those two." She said.
"Yeah," I mumbled, lowering my gaze.
"But why was Cole lying?" She asked, narrowing his eyes at him.
"I-I w-was...... c-confused." He said and she narrowed her eyes at him some more.
"He didn't want you telling Blake's parents about it. He's just a loyal friend." I said, giving Cole a fake smile.
"Y-Yes." He said.
"I'm sure Claire wouldn't be happy if she knew." Mrs. Hamilton said, shaking her head.
"Alright, I'll leave you two to have fun now." She said and turned away but quickly looked back to us, "By the way, Cole, your dad dropped me off here. So you'll have to give me a ride home." She said and gave him a smile before leaving.
"Really? Blake's Date?" Cole asked, once she was out of hearing range.
"Really? C-Catering?" I asked back, mocking his stutter and he rolled his eyes before sitting down on a nearby couch with a sigh.
"I just don't like the idea of them." He said.
"Neither do I. But sometimes you just have to let go."
"But I don't want to let go." He said, "Just thinking of having no hope fills me with anxiety."
"I know how that feels." I smiled, "But hope does not always give you joy. Sometimes it breaks your heart."
"You think negatively." He said, narrowing his eyes.
"I'm just being realistic, Cole. If they like each other, then we have no rights to hold them back." I said.
"I guess you're right." He said sadly.
I gave him a sad smile before softly placing my hand on his, making him look up at me.
"Let's just hope that it gets better. I mean, life can't be said forever unless we let it be." I said and he gave me a smile before nodding his head.
A cough made us turn our heads away from each other to Terra who stood there with her hands at the back.
"Umm... It's getting late. Maybe we should go home." She told Cole, making absolutely no eye contact with me.
"I can't drive you home. My mom's here and she's going to use my car." He said and her face fell.
"Ask Blake for a ride." I said and her eyes snapped to me.
"W-What?" She asked, giving me a confused look.
"Are you deaf or are you dumb?" I asked.
She turned to Cole questioningly and looked at me with a distraught expression. I gave his hand an assuring squeeze, making him smile at me before turning to Terra.
"You should go." He said, but her gaze was pointed at our intertwined hand.
"Terra!" I shouted, making her head snap back to me, "Aren't you leaving?"
"I-I don't understand." She said.
"Just go! There's a limit to how long I could handle being near you." I said, rolling my eyes.
"O-Okay," she stuttered before she slowly turned around and walked away.
"I don't like this." I heard Cole mutter once she was out of sight.
"It hurts like a bitch. But it can't hurt forever." I said, resting my head on his shoulder.
"I don't want her to be with him." He said.
"Neither do I. But I just want him to be happy." I said, "He's not in the best place right now, and maybe she would make him feel better."
"I really don't care if he's happy or not." Cole mumbled.
"But you do care about her, don't you?" I asked.
"I really do." He whispered.
"Then do right thing." I said and I felt him nod.
"I'll have to offer Asher and Hazel a ride now. They came here with Blake, and there's no way they would be in the same car with Terra." I said and I lifted my head from Cole's shoulder.
"You're all over reacting." He said, rolling his eyes.
"No, we're not. She's just annoying to be around." I said as I took my phone out to text Hazel.
"I told Hazel to meet me in my limo with Asher." I informed.
"You should ride with us. I bet you don't want to be with your mom." I said.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
"Of course, your place is on my way." I shrugged.
"Thanks." He smiled.
"How about one more dance? We didn't get to finish it earlier." I said and he nodded before we got up from the couch. I grabbed his hand and pulled him to the dance floor again.
After a few minutes of dancing, he went to get some water as I walked out towards my limo where Hazel and Asher were already waiting.
On my way, I saw Blake leaning against his car as Terra stood in front of him. He was saying something with a small laugh as she wore a prominent blush on her face, clearly visible despite the darkness. He grinned at her before tapping on the tip of her nose, making her giggle as she took a step away from him.
It hurt so much to see him with her, but at the same time I couldn't help but smile at how happy he looked.
His eyes averted to me and he gave me a big smile. He said something to Terra before he jogged over to me.
"Hey Lynne," He grinned and I gave him a small smile.
"Thank you," He said.
"For what?" I asked.
"Terra said that you suggested that she rides with me. It was nice of you to help her out." He said.
"I'm not helping her. You are." I argued.
"You did help her in a way." He said.
"No," I said and he chuckled.
"Okay, fine. You didn't help her." He smiled before wrapping his arms around my waist and pressing his lips against my forehead.
"You're amazing." He whispered, placing his forehead on mine.
"I know." I said
"Addy," I heard a voice call and I turned my head to see Cole standing behind me, "Let's leave."
I felt Blake tighten his grip around my waist and I turned back to see him glare at Cole.
"Blake, leave me." I said softly and his eyes softened as he looked at me before loosening his grip around me.
I stepped away from him and Cole grabbed my hand as he gave Blake a deep scowl before he pulled me to my limo.
I opened the door only to see Hazel making out with Asher on his lap.
"Gross, guys!" I exclaimed, making them break off their kiss and turn to me.
I got in the car followed by Cole before he shut the door behind him. Hazel straightened her hair as she plopped down next to Asher on the limo before they gave us wide grins.
As the car started moving, I looked out the window and saw Blake staring at me. His eyes held a lot of emotions and I hated every ounce of pain it made me feel. But it shouldn't matter whether he liked Cole or not.
He wanted to be with her; not me.
He will be, and he'll forget all about me.
