40. Masquerade Balls and Never-ending Hopes

^^ Those are their masks for the ball. Addy's and Blake's on top. Cole's and Terra's at the bottom

Blake's POV

"Why do we have to ride with him?" I heard Hazel whisper to Asher and I rolled my eyes.

"Poor guy does not have a date. We're doing him a favor and giving him company." Asher whispered back.

"You do know that I can hear you, right?" I asked, leaning back on the seat of my limo and folding my arms.

"You do know that I don't care, right?" Hazel asked, mocking my tone.

"I will not allow her in my car if she behaves like this." I warned Asher and he chuckled before wrapping his arms around Hazel and pulling her closer to him.

"Be nice." He told her and she huffed in annoyance.

I rolled my eyes before moving them to the shopping bags containing six pair of shoes next to me.

"Do you think she'll talk to me?" I asked.

"Yes, she will. I spoke to her and she said that she's not mad at you." Asher said and I looked up at him.

"If she's not mad, then how is she feeling about me?" I asked, "Because she has clearly been ignoring me the entire week."

"She just wanted some time. It's over and she's ready to talk to you." He replied. I nodded before looking out the window and it was a just a few more minutes before we reached the masquerade ball.

"Okay, time to wear your masks." Asher said before taking out his black mask and putting it on. Hazel did the same and they both turned to me.

"Aren't you wearing your mask?" Asher asked and Hazel silently giggled, already knowing how it looks like.

I reluctantly took the golden mask from one of the shopping bags before putting it over my eyes.

"Is that a butterfly?" Asher asked, leaning in closer to examine it.

"Lynne bought it." I said.

"Is this a joke? There has got to be another mask." He said and I shook my head.

"It's not a joke. Addy thought that he would look cute with a butterfly on his eyes." Hazel giggled.

"I do." I said as a matter of fact.

"You don't." She laughed and I rolled my eyes.

The driver stopped the limo in front of the entrance and our windows were immediately hit with all the lights.

The door was opened by a middle-aged man and Asher got out before holding his hand out for Hazel. Taking it, she got out of the car and they walked towards the entrance as I stepped out of the car too. I straightened my suit before walking in the same direction Asher and Hazel disappeared, leading me to the ball where I found people wearing different masks and formal dresses.

I let my eyes scan the place before walking towards Asher and Hazel who seemed to have found Kate.

"Where's Lynne?" I asked.

"She's probably fashionably late." Kate replied with a shrug.

"Look at that loser." Asher said, looking at a guy in a Spiderman mask walking in a distance, "He does know that this is not a Halloween party, right?" He laughed.

Kate turned around to look at the guy before turning towards us with an awkward look.

"That's my boyfriend." She said and we frowned at her before looking at the guy walking towards us.

"Hey guy!" Jack greeted before swinging his arms around Kate's shoulder.

"This is a formal ball, Jack. You're supposed to dress formal." Hazel said.

"I know. That's why I'm wearing this suit." He said smugly.

"You don't wear a colorful Spiderman mask to a formal ball." I said, shaking my head.

"Says the guy wearing a butterfly mask." He scoffed.

"At least it looks formal." I mumbled and he rolled his eyes.

"Look at Asher," Jack said, "He's wearing a batman mask."

"No, I'm not. This is an ordinary black mask." Asher defended.

"Look at those batman ears." Jack said, touching the pointed edge on Asher's mask.

"Those are not batman ears!" Asher fought, swatting away Jack's hands.

My phone rang and I looked at the caller ID before walking away from them.

"Hi!" I heard Terra's excited voice from the other side of the line.

"Hey, Terra." I smiled.

"Are you attending the ball tonight?" She asked.

"I'm already here actually. What about you?"

"I'm coming too. Cole's parents had some last-minute plans, so we won't get caught if he brings me here." She said.

"That's great! Are you here yet?" I asked with a smile playing on my lips..

"Yeah, Cole's just talking to the driver. We'll be inside in a second."

"Great, can't wait." I said with a smile and we said out goodbyes before hanging up.

"Who was that?" Asher asked, walking up to me.

"Terra", I replied, "She's going to be here any moments."

"Great! There goes you chance with Addy." He said, rolling his eyes.

"No!" I said, "Lynne has no problems with me hanging out with Terra anymore. She has changed. I just need to talk to her and sort things out."

"Try not to get distracted by Terra." He said, patting on my back and walking away.

I walked to the drink table before picking up a glass of champagne. I turned around and leaned against the table as I sipped on the drink while taking in the sight.

And that's when I saw her. Just look at her sent my heart racing her as she flashed her bright smile to the place, seeing the view. Her dress flowed behind her as she slowly descended the stairs and looked around the place, observing every little detail.

As she reached the last step, I took a deep breath before placing my drink on the table and walking towards her.

"Hey!" She smiled as I reached her.

"Wanna dance?" I asked, stretching my hand towards her and she gave me a small smile before taking it.

Hand in hand, we walked towards the center of the room. Getting into position, I pulled her flush against my chest. Her breath hitched, breathing hard as I smiled.

"Are you enjoying the ball?" I asked as we swayed in sync along with the music.

"I just got here." She laughed.

"Right", I said awkwardly as I mentally slapped myself for being so stupid.

I looked up at her as she slowly swayed and I smirked before letting go of her waist and spinning her around before pulling her back to me, letting her body crash on to mine.

Her breath got heavier as she looked up to stare into my eyes and for a second there, I lost my control and I slowly leaned in towards her until we were interrupted by a ping of a phone.

She quickly pulled away from me before fishing out her phone from the tiny purse hung around her shoulder. She read the message and then stuffed her phone back into her purse before wrapping her arms around my neck again.

"It's Cole," She said, making me grit my teeth, "Something about his parents."

I huffed and nodded my head before snaking my hands around her waist, pulling her body back to mine. As we continued to dance to the slow song, I moved my lips towards her ear before bringing my hand up to move her hair to the side.

"You're the most beautiful girl here tonight." I whispered, letting my lips brush her ear.

"I know, I always am." She replied and I laughed before placing a kiss on her temple.

"You really are, Lynne." I said, softly caressing her cheek, "When I went to buy this dress, just thinking about you in it was driving me crazy. Now here you are, looking much more irresistible than I imagined you to be and it's so hard to hold myself back." I whispered and she gave me a small smile before moving her gaze to the floor.

"I hate it when you're not talking to me, Lynne." I said, but she remained silent.

"Please talk to me." I begged.

"I am talking to you." She said.

"No, you're not." I said.

"You know what, you're right. We don't talk anymore." She huffed, "The sex stopped and so did any real relationship between us."

"That's not true, Lynne. Whether we have sex or not does not matter. You'll always mean everything to be no matter what kind of relationship we have and that's never going to change, Lynne."

"But you act like all you want is sex." She said.

"I'm sorry if I made it look like that, but I swear that's not it. I flirt with you because I still keep holding onto the hope that things would go back to the way they were, because it was one of the best things in my life, Lynne. But that's not what's most important to me. I want to have sex with you, but I don't need it. All I need is you. Even if it is just as friends, I don't care. I need you to talk to me, Lynne." I said.

"So, even if I don't have sex with you, you won't leave me?" She asked.

"I won't. I promise you; I'm never leaving."

"Can I really trust you?" She whispered.

"Yes, you can. If this is about the paternity test, then stop worrying about that, Lynne. You didn't exactly know about the problems with my dad, but you were the only who helped me through it. I didn't tell you because I didn't need anyone to talk about it to. I was already feeling better because of you and I wanted it to remain that way." I said.

"I'm sorry if it made you feel like I didn't feel close to you anymore, but I do. And I want you to feel the same way about me too." I whispered.

"I do." She said and smiled at me before pulling me into a tight hug. I laughed and hugged her back, as I rested my head on hers.

After a few seconds, she abruptly pulled away from me and I frowned at her.

"What's wrong?" I asked as I caught her staring at something behind us and I lifted my eyebrows before turning to follow her gaze only to find Terra standing there.

"S-Sorry, I-I didn't mean t-to intrude", she stuttered. She looked around nervously before turning around and walking away hastily.

"You should go", I heard Lynne say and I turned my head to look at her.

"Lynne, if you don't want me t–"

"Blake, I know you like her and I don't want you to have to give up anything for me." She said and I lowered my gaze. She brought a hand to my cheek and I looked up at her to see her give me a sad smile.

"If she would make you happy, go talk to her. Yeah, I kind of hate her, but I guess she can't be that bad if she makes you happy." She said and a smile appeared on my lips.

"When did you become so nice?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Ouch! You're rude!" She said before chuckling and I laughed as I pulled her towards me to place a kiss on her forehead.

"Now go." She said, lightly pushing me and I chuckled before turning around.

I walked until I reached a secluded place near the dining area where Terra sat alone.

"Hey," I said, taking a seat next to her. She gave me a forced smile before looking away awkwardly.

"Terra, what's wrong?" I asked.

"There's nothing w-wrong." She said softly, looking at the ground.

"There is. Just tell me what."

"I'm so confused Blake," She said, "You're not giving me any clear signals. One moment you tell me that Addelyn is just you friend and that you like me. But then as soon as you see her, it's like you forget all about me."

I lowered my head in guilt for a second before look up at her again. "I'm sorry, Terra. I'm confused too. I did like you, and I still do, but I didn't do anything about it because I didn't want things to change between Lynne and me. Now it's all over, and I don't know what to do." I said.

"It didn't seem like it was all over to me." She said.

"She says that it is." I said, "We've been in this relationship for three years. Moving on isn't that easy." I said.

"Do you think that you'll ever move on?" She asked.

"I don't know. It seems so impossible right now."

"Whether it's possible or not depends on whether you want to move on or not. Do you want to?" She asked.

"I don't know that either. I keep hoping that she'll change her mind and sometimes it feels like things are going back to normal. But everything falls apart again."

"I think that you need some time to figure things out." She said, putting a hand over mine, "I don't mind waiting for an answer."

"Thank you, Terra." I smiled at her as she got up from her seat and gave me a small hug before walking away.

I walked back to the dance floor, hoping to see Lynne, but she wasn't there anymore. So, I found Asher and asked him where she was before going outside to where he said I could find.

I saw her standing at a distance, leaning against the railings separating the land from the sea and I walked over to her before circling my hands around her waist. She jumped in shock and turned to look at me before relaxing. I chuckled as I rested my head on her shoulder, tightening my hold on her waist.

"How did it go with Terra?" She asked.

"I think it went pretty well." I said and she turned around before wrapping her hands around my neck.

She smiled at me but something about the look on her face told me that she wasn't happy.

"Blake, what's wrong?" She asked, tilting her head.

"Is it really over between us?" I asked.

"No, we're best friends, Blake." She smiled.

She was about to say something else when her phone pinged and she took it out before reading the message.

"It's Cole again. He said that he wants to talk." She said and clenched my jaw.

"Why does he keep texting you?" I asked.

"I don't know. I guess I'll have to go find out." She said.

She softly kissed my cheek and gave me a smile before turning around and walking away from me as I clenched my fist, watching her go to him.
