Chapter 13
Chapter 13
It was time to pay a little visit to the Alpha's daughter.
-Anala-
I stopped in front of the door where the Alpha had barged in, where his daughter is, I pressed my ear to the door to make sure the time freeze affected her as well. The room was silent; the only thing was the sound of her heartbeat. I knock on the door and when I didn't hear anything I smiled and opened the door. The Alpha's daughter sat frozen on her bed clutching a book to her chest. I walk toward her and gently take the book from her. It was pretty worn out, and the cover was just barely hanging on with tape. Glancing at it, "Miles Away From You" By A.B. Rutledge, I have never read this book before, but even I could tell it meant a lot to this girl. I open it, and a note falls out. Picking it up I saw that it was a letter to her.
Charis,
Even if we are miles away from each other, I will never stop thinking of you; I will never stop loving you. I am the luckiest man ever to live because I get to have you as my mate. I love-
I close the book quickly...I didn't want to read anymore...it was too personal, and it hurt too much. As if it were a precious jewel I set the book down on the table beside her bed. I looked back at the girl sitting before me, completely helpless. I could kill her right now and leave...no one would ever know. I crouch down to her eye level.
"I know how it feels," I whisper to her and place my hand on her cheek, "I know how it feels to be completely helpless...and lost" I trail off tucking her light brown hair behind her ear. I placed my hand on the side of her neck and closed my eyes. I could feel her soul beckoning me to consume it, promising to fill the emptiness inside me. It was begging me to take it because she had already lost so much. She wanted the pain to end. I tear my hand from her and crawl back. Her honey brown eyes stared unmoving at the floor. I put my hand to my mouth to stop my sob. I felt everything she was trying to hide, but beyond her beauty, I can see her red puffy eyes. I can see the stains on her cheeks that her tears left behind. I look back at the tattered book, the one she so desperately clung to... She was just as damaged as I am.
Sometimes...not knowing is better Ana, do you want to do this? Rica asked
Maybe we should just go...Rica suggested. I sigh and get up. I try to walk towards the door, and before my hand touches the doorknob, I stop and look back.
If it were us...we would want to know I told Rica. I could feel myself sway a little; I was beginning to lose my strength. I needed food, sniffing the air I went to the side of her bed and pulled out a box of what looked like yellow fish crackers. I spotted a half-filled water bottle and took that as well. Moving towards the other side of the room away from her I learned on the wall.
Ana, Rica cautioned, and I couldn't help but shiver a little at the warning.
I can handle this. We need to do this. I tried to convince myself more than her. I know this could bite me in the ass, but I am done playing around. Holding my breath, I call out the soul who stopped the time. It appears in front of me and bows its head. I hate when they do that.
"Unfreeze her," I tell the soul pointing at the girl. The soul looks between the girl and me, obviously confused.
"Now!" I ordered, my voice harder. The soul bowed its head again and before I could say anything I was distracted when I heard a loud thud as the girl fell off the bed.
-Charis-
"Ow!" I mutter, rubbing my head.
The book! I mentally scream!
No no no no! Please, not that...It's the only thing I have left! Scalding hot tears began to stream down my face, and I feel my breathing start to pick up.
"Where did it go!" I mutter letting out a sob, I crawl under the bed, searching for it.
I swear I had it in my hands-
"It's on the table." A small voice said behind me. I jumped slamming my back and head on the bed.
"Shit! Mother Fuc- Shit!" I screamed coming out from under the bed only to come face to face with a kid.
Language! There's a child here! Zilya, my wolf, screamed in my head and I flinched feeling guilty.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were here - wait...what?" I asked suddenly aware that I'm crying and trying to apologize to a kid I don't even know. I wipe my eyes.
"The book," she whispered, "it's on the table." She lifted a bony hand to point to my bedside table. I felt some weight lift off my shoulder when I saw it. I snatch the book off the table and hold it to my chest, releasing the breath I didn't know I was holding. At least this was safe...I was distracted by my thoughts when I heard crunching sounds in the corner of the room reminding me I still had an unknown guest. I turn my head slowly to her. She sat cross-legged in the far corner of my room, hidden by the shadows. She had my box of goldfish, she grabbed a goldfish and sniffed it before carefully placing it in her mouth to chew. She did this with at least five goldfish before looking up and then back down at the box holding it up.
"Want some?" She mumbled lifting the box higher for me; I stared at her dumbfounded.
"Um...no thanks," I mumbled.
"Wait! How did you get in here? When did you get in here?" I asked when my brain suddenly remembered to work. She lifted her hand to point to the door, and I had the sudden urge to roll my eyes.
"I did knock." She muttered again, and I couldn't help but let out a small giggle.
"Okay, Nanny McPhee." I joked, expecting her to smile finally.
"What?" She asked tilting her head to the side. Her electric blue eyes were piercing my very soul...like she knew my darkest secret. There was power in her eyes, and without even realizing what I was doing I feel myself sink to my knees, just to try to be lower than her eyesight.
Zilya, what's happening? I ask, but she kept quiet. This was unnatural; I'm the daughter of an Alpha! I shouldn't be doing this. I lift my head to try to meet her eyes, but everything in my body was telling me just to submit. I glance back at her; she was dressed in clothes that drowned her small frame. She was skin and bones, it was like staring at a skeleton, Her bright red hair the only color on her pale body, but it was jagged as if cut by a knife. The shirt hung over her shoulders and when she moved the moonlight would reflect off her pale shin showing mangled scars leading up her neck and would plunge below the neckline of the shirt. I felt anger rush through me.
"Who are you?" I whisper, biting my tongue to keep from saying miss to a little girl. Her eyebrows furrow and I feel myself panic a little; maybe I should've said, miss.
"Right...I guess this is as good a time as any." She said bringing out a manilla folder from behind her back. She tosses it to me, and it lands right by my hands.
"You might want to read that" She advised looking down at the water bottle she now had in her hands. I look at the folder and then back at her.
"What is it?" I asked
"The truth." She sniffled, and I had a sudden urge to go over there and comfort her. The folder she tossed at me looked crumpled and partly burnt, but I picked it up and read. I sucked in a sharp breath when I saw my father's name signed at the bottom.
"Why are you showing this to me?" I asked with tears in my eyes.
"Because you needed to know the truth...You needed to know that your mate did not die in a rogue attack." I shook my head.
No, please don't say it! Please. I begged in my head feeling the tears stream down my face.
"You're lying!" I scream at her throwing the documents.
"Am I? By your reaction, I can tell you had your suspicions... Look we don't know each other well, but in less than ten hours I just watched the world that I knew burn to ash...I have nothing left to lose and nothing to gain by showing you that document." She argued softly as if talking to a child and the irony was not lost on me. I looked down at my hands; this was a lie...it just had to be!
"My father would never agree to this!" I yelled, lunging at her. She stood up and grabbed my hands before I could hit her face! I tried yanking my arms back, but she was too strong. I fell to my knees crying.
"Your mate was murdered by your father." She finished, and the last thing I saw were her bright blue eyes staring down at me.
