Dear Goddess, give me the strength to get through tonight. I think before I change back to my human form.
I sniff out some clothes that many pack members leave in case of emergencies. I found a pair of long shorts and a large t-shirt under a tree root. These clothes will help cover my tracks if I can't control the soul. Because of that scuffle, I had with those wolves I lost what little clothes I had.
It will work Anala, trust me Ulrica reassured
I believe you... it's jitters I guess I tell Rica, I was anxious, and I wanted to run far away from all wolves. But I know Rica, and she is the strongest one I know...if she says this will work I can't deny her. I take a deep breath and call out a soul; it glides out and floats in front of my eyes, dark and comforting. It circles me and tugs at my large shirt. I hold out my palm, and it curls up letting me feel its warmth, I breathe a sigh of relief. The soul wants to comfort me; it feels my anxiety.
Relax, Ana, speak the word, and it will follow the command. But you have to believe it. Picture yourself hidden from everyone. Ulrica commands and I nod staring at the soul; it's blank dark face looking up at me, awaiting its command. I calm my nerves and think of myself being invisible.
"Hide" I whisper to the soul. At first, the soul does nothing, resting on my palm. I sigh and bow my head in defeat.
Did I get the word wrong? I know I'm not strong enough to give full sentence commands but...Out of the corner of my eyes, I see something shiny. I jerk my head up to see the soul shining. What the hell!! I said hide! Not show them my damn location! I tried cupping my palms together in an attempt to hide the brightness. I crouch down and begin looking for any signs of wolves coming at me. The soul was starting to shine like a light until it burst to hit everything around us in bright lights. I fall back on my butt and stare at the soul who was beginning to reform itself. The world went back to being black, everything stilled.
"Are you kidding me!" I whisper yelled at the soul. It looks back at me with its blank face. I slap a hand to my forehead exasperated. I hear a shuffle of leaves, and I jerk my head to see a huge grey wolf looking around. I froze when his eyes landed on the bush I was hiding behind.
Faex Rica and I both thought [shit in Latin]. I stared at him through the leaves. The wolf began to advance towards us. My eyes never left his.
Can we kill him? Ulrica asked, practically jumping up and down.
No! I shouted at her.
Just a little bit? Rica pleaded, lowering her head, knowing my answer. The wolf began to stalk closer, sniffing the air. I felt everything inside my body stiffen, preparing to fight, I moved my legs under me. The wolf growled and lunged toward me; I stood up ready to grab his jaw and slam his head into the ground when suddenly he flew through me and landed on the rabbit behind me. I let out a surprised gasp it felt strange when he went through me, almost like a hot breathe passing by. I look back at the soul, the smugness radiating off the thing made me almost want to slap it upside the head. But I felt myself smile.
It worked! I look down at my feet to see that I was only a few inches off the ground, I took a step and didn't feel the twigs break under me, when I reached towards the bush, my fingers passed through them. I look back at the wolf who was enjoying his kill. My smile grew, finally...finally something was going right! I continue watching as the wolf ate his kill when he was done he started walking back the way he came from.
Follow him, Ana Rica encourages, and I quickly step to walk with him. The wolf stops and looks around...almost searching for something. He sniffs the air, but it seems like he came up empty. I take a small sigh of relief when he keeps walking. After a couple of minutes, he breaks into a hard run and the whole way I'm right next to him. It's amazing what a little food and water can do for someone. In a matter of seconds, we arrive at a small clearing with rows of houses lined on edge of the forest and a massive house in the middle. I stand with the wolf, stunned. Even though it was the middle of the night and morning was coming, lights were on, and people were outside walking and chatting around. Kids were running and laughing with joy. I look at the wolf next to me, and I see him sit down to watch two children pretending to fight with swords that lit up. He gave a wolfie chuckle when the little boy dropped the sword and tackled his brother... they roll around until a woman comes and breaks them apart and offers them cookies. I look back at the wolf.
His family I realize, He has pups and a mate, I smile, Rica wanted to kill him...but if I had, I would've left this family without a father who seemed to care about them. I felt a tear slip from my face, he will have something I will always want, but that's never going to be his fault. I needed to calm down and remember why I was here. I lift my hand and pat the wolf on his head. To him, it would feel like a slight breeze, but to me, it was my thanks. I leave the wolf with his family and walk towards the big house. It looked like there was a garage coming out.
Hey Rica? Can I pass through walls? I ask a little hesitant when I reach the door.
Only one way to find out I guess. I lift an eyebrow, that wasn't comforting. I can't start breaking down walls, that would cause too much attention. Before I could test this, a loud howl broke out through the peaceful night. I look towards the woods and see the wolves that attacked me in the woods. They were covered in dirt and twigs, one man's arm was bent at an odd angle, another was being carried by the largest man who had a nasty cut on his head that was slowly healing. I looked around and saw that everyone had gone inside and the wolf who led me in was standing protectively at a house. The door burst open making me jump back surprised. A large man came rushing out going through me. I gasp, each time they do that the feeling felt so warm...like a hug. I slapped my hand on my mouth when he stopped to turn in my direction. I keep still, did I lose control of the soul? Can they hear me? But I would've felt if my protection had worn off. The man squints his eyes but turns back to the wolves. I let out the breath I was holding and followed him.
"What happened?" The man asked.
"Alpha, the Blood Wolf was on our territory. We tried to contain her, but she attacked us and ran away."
What, and I cannot stress this enough, the fuck! We attacked them?! They cornered us, and we escaped! Ulrica screamed in my head, and frankly, I couldn't argue. This is how rumors are spread! I distinctly remember just being in the stream before I was rudely interrupted!
"Shit!" The Alpha cursed before running back into the house; I followed curiously to what had the alpha running in fear. He sped up the stairs and went to a room before bursting open. There stood a beautiful girl sitting in the middle of the room surrounded by books; she looks up started to see the man come in. The Alpha let out a sigh of relief.
Why was he so scared he ran to her?
"Dad? What's wrong?" The girl said, her voice was light and sweet.
"Sorry, sweetie, its just...it's nothing. Sorry, I burst in." The man said before turning to leave.
"No, please tell me. You looked scared." The girl persisted getting up and placing a hand on her father's back. He stiffened before letting out a big sigh and crumbling on her bed.
"I just wanted to make sure you were safe. You know we have a lot of enemies, and one of them came near our borders but it doesn't look like it came back." I couldn't help but flinch when he called me it.
It!? Vescere bracis meis, you pig! This thing called 'it' can kill you in your sleep! Rica barked.
Why do we want him to eat our shorts? These are a good pair of shorts, a little big but I like them. I wondered to Rica; I could feel her roll her eyes.
Never mind; pay attention. Rica scolded, and I look back at the two people on the bed. The Alpha leaned over to kiss her on the head; he patted her cheek and got up and left. I began to follow him and looked back at the girl, a pang of jealousy stabbing my heart. I shake my head and continue to monitor the Alpha. He walks over to another room on the same floor and slams the door. When we enter the room I had to look around; there were so many books! Is this a dream? It was beautiful, and I wanted to spend my days here. The alpha walks over to a desk filled with paper and throws himself at his chair. He grabbed at his head and pulled at his greying hair. There was a knock on the door, and I spun around preparing for a fight when I remembered they couldn't see me. I relaxed my stance but kept my eyes trained on the door and my back to the wall.
"Come in." The Alpha barked.
"Sir?" A young man with light chestnut hair and beautiful brown eyes peaked his head in the door, when he received a wave from the Alpha, he and the three other wolves came marching in. These were the wolves from the forest. They stood in front of the desk a little away from the Alpha.
"Are you sure it was the Blood Wolf?" The Alpha asked, almost worried.
"Yes, Alpha, she had the markings." The man in the middle answered.
"Alaric, go stand guard at my daughter's door; make sure she is safe." The Alpha ordered, and I couldn't help but wonder again. Why was he so worried about his daughter?
"Tell me everything." The Alpha demanded when the man who peaked his head in the office turned and walked out.
"We got the distress call from Edmon that a rogue entered the territory, so we pursued and found the Blood Wolf on the run. We engaged and she..." He trailed off rubbing the side of his head where the cut was still healing.
"WHAT!" The Alpha roared.
"We don't know how she did it, one second it looked like she was cornered and we all attacked, and the next we were flying through the sky. Alpha, why is she here?" A man in an arm sling asked. It looked like his arm was placed correctly. I looked at the Alpha wanting him to answer that question.
"She wants revenge...That demon is after my daughter" The Alpha muttered. I raised my eyebrows confused? Why would I want her? Sure, I am a little envious of her...but not enough to kill her.
"Why!? She has been through so much already!" The man in the arm sling said.
"She was the mate of Xander; he rejected her today. My daughter is going to be the new Luna of the Nightfall Pack, what better way to get back at her ex by killing her!" The Alpha roared throwing his desk to the side. I stepped back; it felt like a punch to my gut. That was the girl who was going to be Xander's, new mate...I felt my breathing pick up and my tears returning to me. Ulrica growled with rage and hatred for the girl. I took a step back and felt the books tumble from the bookshelf. I got out of the way before the bookshelf collapsed. I stared in shock and saw the men look at the fallen books as well.
"She's here! Get this house on lockdown! Find her!" The Alpha ordered before lunging for the door. I didn't think I lifted my hand.
"Freeze!" I screamed...time stopped.
