When I woke up, the thing I thought was, 'that was a weird dream...'
I dreamt that I had a brother and that I was a queen of an invisible kingdom. Then there was this bad guy who wanted the kingdom and I had to go through hell with me so called brother to retrieve it. I didn't know what happened in the end since I guess I woke up.
All I could think of was school.
Another boring school day... Which day was is? Maybe it's a holiday. I couldn't quite remember. I unconsciously rolled over in my bed, but there was something stuck to my arm. I gulped. Was it a bug?
That concept of a giant bug in my arm was enough to jerk me back to life. I shook my arm, only to find a syringe fixed onto it with a tube that was attacked to a packet of drained blood. I was in a room; a large one ... and definitely not the one in my home.
That's when I realized that my dream was not a dream.
It was real.
I was a queen once. I have a brother. My mom got kidnapped. I'm probably in Sightless. I gave out a moan; my muscled weren't feeling that good. That's when I saw a face peeping at me from the crack of the door. The face, realizing that I already saw here walked in.
She was a girl, probably fourteen or fifteen with rough ginger brown hair, wearing a denim jacket and a pair of jeans. What I noticed most about her were her eyes.
They were icy blue.
"Her icy blue eyes gazed towards the sky...."
That was the opening line of the first Mystica book.
My eyes widened. 'A-are you Mystica?'
The girl cocked her head, studying me. She then smiled. It was a very reserved one. 'I am.'
All of a sudden, a man in a trench coat stormed into my room, 'She is awake!'
And then the hoard rushed in.
My mother suffocated me with a bear hug while Andrew stood behind her and yelled, 'You idiot! You could have died! You almost died!'
I could not help but laugh. Isis stood behind them all, frowning while a Seer who looked like a doctor kept on asking math and history questions from me and finally said, 'No signs of brain damage.'
Mom let go of me. I didn't notice that she was crying. 'Oh god,' she said. 'I thought I lost you.'
I looked at Andrew. Why were all of them acting like I was at my death bed?
'You were unconscious for two weeks,' said Andrew.
Two weeks.
That's the longest I have been sleep.
After that tearful reunion, the doctor ordered everyone to get out and allow me to rest. I wanted to argue that two weeks rest was enough for a human but it was getting too crowded in my room.
'Andrew, wait.'
Everyone left but Andrew.
'What happened?'
He sat at the edge of the bed. 'Taramen got arrested. Things were chaos, since you were out as well. Your mother settled things a bit...'
I tried to study his face. 'Did... did my mom actually like him? I mean, she was mortified when I showed up at the wedding.'
Andrew shrugged. 'She must have known what he was planning and wanted you to stay away. Anyway, Abdahabul somehow managed to wake Mr. Blake's daughter. She had been here ever since. We took down the arch and some unwanted... structures. The Imrisonatorium remained the same.'
I leaned back on the bed. 'Well then, I guess things have settled.'
He watched at me for a long time, as if waiting to break bad new to me. 'What?' I said.
Andrew sighed and rubbed the back of his head. 'The Council.... They..... Want you to take the throne again.'
I stayed quiet for a very long time while my fingers fiddled with the tube. 'They want me back?'
Andrew nodded. 'Look, I know you have the job. I mean, they were quite worried that you might not wake up the... same.'
'What do you mean?' I said. 'It's just blood loss and maybe a bit of a shock.'
'But the spell, it's meant to be lethal. Isis was sure there would be something wrong with you after that. Can you use your voice?'
I gulped. I don't know. I looked at the ceiling, there were fairies fluttering around. I wanted to call them, but they closed in before I could even tell them and they started to mess with my hair. 'I-I don't know.'
For some reason, I didn't want to listen to my own chimes in my voice. The memories of what happened in the tower were imprinted hard in my memory. I smiled at Andrew. 'I'm sure it still works.'
'You're scared aren't you,' he said.
'No I'm not!'
'I don't' want to sugarcoat things, Amethyst. There was an earthquake in Cairo that day. And it was not a coincidence. You almost ripped open the veil. For once Thor was able to do something right ton time.'
I could not help but laugh. 'The plan was a disaster wasn't it...'
'Not really, I mean, it worked since no one wanted Taramen for king after your wedding scenario. Oh, and I hired the harpies for the royal guard.'
'You what?'
'Come-on... They are not that bad. They just needed a job.'
I sighed. Oh, well, I was not queen anymore. But I could not help but being concerned.
'What about the wedding?'
'We celebrated Apollo's and Artemis's birthday.... So, will you take it?'
'Take what?'
'The throne?'
I shook my head. 'After what happened, Andrew, do you still think I can do this whole "queen" thing? You know I suck at it. Yeah, sure, we might be the only ones with the right to the throne but... I had enough of my share of being queen.'
He never mentioned about it after that.
After resting a few days, we took a plane ticket home. It was my first time being in a plane and for some reason; mom was behaving really odd, like as if we were afraid I might break any moment. It was understandable, but it still was annoying. When we finally, finally reached home, the fairies were waiting.
After being so long in Sightless, mom had somehow developed the "Sight" and our first course of action was to order pizza.
Then I went back to school.
People gave me strange looks after coming back to school after so long. Even Isa was acting all strange around me. I knew she had been watching the news in Sightless lately. But she did seem pretty glad to have me back. For once I felt normal.
Andrew didn't come back to school. I sort of missed him. Since I missed a lot of school I spent a lot of time doing homework and completing notes. Things... somehow went back to normal before Trevelyan arrived.
Trevelyan... I wondered what that gnome was doing.
Sometimes I felt like I was always being walked, especially when I was on the road, since I always saw this black Mercedes that always changed its plate number.
No matter how much it seemed normal, things never went back to the way things were.
Isa and Shone started to date. Finally, but yet again, I was the one who had to listen to all of her ranting. Even our relationship went back to how it was before all of this happened, but it still felt strange. One day, when I was visiting Isa in her home, I was no frustrated that I asked her, 'Why are you acting all strange around me all the time!'
Isa simply stared at me for a while before she said, 'You aren't.... what you were before.'
'What is that supposed to mean?'
'You are not the same, Amy. You never were ever since the halo moon. Only now did I realize it.'
I hugged her teddy bear. 'W-what do you mean I'm not the same? I'm still the same old stupid me.'
Isa shook her head.
We ended the conversation there. Even mom started to treat me differently. She got over protective and she stayed home more than usual. In fact, she got a hang of living with the fairies. Sometimes, we would get strange letters and invitations for different events in Sightless.
After one month of staying home, I felt something I never thought I might even feel.
I started to miss visiting Sightless. I didn't shift for one month, didn't listen to my bell voice either. I must admit, I was now too scared to use it. I guess I will have to do something about it.
After another two month, the final exams came along. I knew that I wasn't able to study much but I tried. Three months of sleep deprivation and constant studying finally paid off when I finally finished my exams. It was not too hard like I imagined it to be and it was a miracle that I was able to do so. I just hope I might have done good enough to get entrance into a good college.
On my final day in Flinton Academy, after graduation and all of the celebration I found myself in the library.
Andrew showed up.
I almost jumped and yelped when he did. I mean, I might have been used to shifting, but it still can scare someone who is not prepared.
My first course of action was to stare at him, my throat dry and said, 'Hi.'
He looked all serious. He was carrying his katana. He must have been looking after things on his own. I could not bear to watch the news anymore since it always brought this constricting feeling into my chest.
'I'm asking you one last time, Amethyst. Will you take the throne?'
I stared at him for a long time. I already graduated. I missed that stupid kingdom with its stupid people. I missed the whining, the chasing and all the crazy things that went on there. I even missed the palace and all the marble. I missed the contact bickering of the council.
Most of all, I never felt misplaced there. For some strange reason, I knew that's the place where I belonged.
That's when I took a deep breath and said, 'You know, only an idiot will refuse.'
Mom was the first to freak out. But she eventually gave in. I mean, I managed just fine without her even knowing. Isa nodded when she heard. It was as if we were expecting it. Zeus wanted to hold another coronation.
I must be the only ruler in history to have been coroneted twice.
It wasn't grand like the first, but there was a large crowd nevertheless. This time, mom came and because she did, I was forced to wear a dress. It was turquoise in color and a bit glittery. I felt horrible in it. But after seeing me, Venus and Athens got all fairy godmother like and refused to allow me to take it off. Those two ladies will get along well with my mother. Andrew commented that I looked like a girl for once. I pulled out my tongue at him. I know. Not ladylike at all.
Once Mr. Abdahabul did the whole ceremony, I became multi-lingual again.
After that, I changed back to my jeans and shirts. I didn't care what whoever thought. I think it must have been in my imagination but I think I saw Agent Mascot pushing his spectacled up his nose somewhere in the crowd. I even mentioned about it Andrew.
'You must have mistaken him for someone else,' he said.
Being in fairyland, I highly doubted that.
But it was quickly forgotten.
I stayed will the partied and all the festivities were over. The palace quieted down only at midnight. I sent an official massage not to send gifts, some didn't listen. But I did sent a note of thanks to Yamagato. His samurai sword was a great help and I doubt Andrew ever keeps it down. That boy was weird that way.
After all the commotion, it was hard to fall asleep. I stared at the Nile for a long time. Slitzer poked his head out of the water, snorted at me and dived down again. I didn't say anything. I even missed him.
Well, I was a queen again. Not so bad, it's better than being called princess. But my small moment of peace was short lived since I heard the loudest roar of any animal I had ever heard. It sounded like a dragon.
I stood up from the stairs I was sitting on. Andrew was already there behind me and he tossed my arrow and bow at me.
'Was that a dragon?'
He shook his head. 'It's.... you won't believe this.... I think it's a dinosaur.'
Sobek.
I'll strangle that idiot. He couldn't help but recreate some prehistoric monster during the time I was gone.
'That idiot just got a ticket to the Imprisonatorium,' I said. Just then, Salzar came to pick us up and we flew off towards the direction of the sound.
Well, that my dear reader, is something very normal when you are a queen. I don't know about queens of other kingdoms. But when you are the Queen of All Strange Things, duty calls for the most strange and bizarre things.
I just hope I will be able to live at least past twenty.
At least...
