The first place that came into my mind was home and that was the first place that the veil opened up to. Andrew must have guessed that it was the first place I would go to and followed me.
Home... there was no better place than home when you were imprisoned in a Egyptian tomb themed prison cell, chased by ghost hounds and being shoved around London.
But seeing how messy it was didn't improve my state of mind.
'Perfect,' I mumbled and started to clean the living room. Andrew helped a bit too but he seemed to be so exhausted that after fifteen minutes, I found him snoring on the couch with Cleo on his lap.
I then turned on the TV, which still miraculously worked. I was not fond of news but I needed to know what was going on in Sightless. Then I went to the kitchen to fetch something to eat. The leftover food was stale and spoilt and the fridge smelt like carrion. Well, we were gone for three months, so I ordered pizza from Dominos (for some reason was still open at midnight).
I woke up Andrew when the Pizza arrived.
'Er.. what?' he said.
I shoved him a box of pizza. 'Here.'
He blinked and sort of took a while to realize where he was. Soon, both of us were eating pizza and drinking orange juice (which fortunately had a week before its expiration date) while watching Sightless TV. It felt very awkward not having fairies around to poke at my hair and Tyke to scream and shout something really stupid.
'We will not rest until the Outlaws are captures,' said bird-man in a press conference. 'Please be cautious around suspicious Seers for enchanters can be dangerous.'
'Your grace,' said a journalist. 'What action do you plan to take on the children?'
'They will be grounded.'
Andrew and I exchanged glances.
Then again I noticed his staff. Quickly forgetting about my pizza, I dug out my Mystica book from inside the bag.
'Look,' I said, shoving the cover page to Andrew's face.
'What's about it?'
I pointed at the scepter that the cloaked girl in the cover was holding. 'It's the same as bird-man's scepter.'
Andrew turned his attention to the TV. 'You got to be crazy. There is a slim chance those two are related.'
I turned off the TV. 'Even the magic he uses is the same as in the book.'
'That's mage magic,' said Andrew. 'I've seen enough of it to recognize them. It's probably influenced by the magic seen in most Anime.'
'So the writer adapted real magic to his book?'
'It can be coincidence,' said Andrew. 'Even if he did, what do you suppose?'
'If the two scepters are related, we can ask the author about how to defeat it,' I said. 'We already know he isn't an enchanter. Exposing that will be enough to kick him out of the throne, but what if he isn't a mage as well.'
'Only a mage can use mage magic,' said Andrew.
I sighed. 'According to the book, the main character is a mage who pulled out her source of magic and stored it in a scepter. It's called a magical core. Anyone can use her magic if they get hold of the scepter, even a non-mage.'
Andrew stared at me. 'You got be kidding me.'
'What?'
'You don't seriously think that's the case, do you? Taramen could be a mage who wanted power.'
'But he's a Seer,' I said. 'He couldn't have made a portal if he weren't one. And if he were a mage, wouldn't that mean he probably couldn't be a Seer?'
That caught hold of Andrew's attention. 'That does make sense. He can't be both. Either way, he's still a fraud. And we have only one day to make a plan. You do have a plan, don't you?'
'I do, but the chances are slim,' I said. 'Anyway, I want to speak to the author.'
'Who is the author?'
'Karl Rightson.'
'And.... How are you going to speak to him?'
'By asking Google.'
Unfortunately, the internet connection in our house had been cut since we didn't pay the bill for a long long time.
'Isa's laptop might have an internet connection,' I said.
'When are you kids going to sleep,' complained Cleo.
'Really Amethyst,' said Andrew with a yawn. 'I really respect the idea of you trying to get Sightless back but when are you going to allow me to sleep?'
I gave a frown and slumped back to the couch. 'Fine... take the guest room.'
'Can't I take the couch?'
Anyway, I showed him where the guest room was and he didn't' refuse to spend the night in it. I went to my room and found Cleo snuggled on my pillow. I didn't care if a cat interrupted my private space since this cat always does and I slept with a cat purring over my head. Andrew woke me up at six. I was still so sleepy but I knew we were out of time. While I laid, lay to get up a small voice in my head said that Sightless was not really my problem.
But then again, if birdman married mom, it will be my problem and that was enough encouragement to get ready for the day. Plus the part where the whole invisible realm might collapse.
I went straight down and dialed Isa's number on the telephone.
'Hello, Amy?'
'Hay.'
'You are home aren't you? This is your home number... I heard you both were in London.'
'We were. I need your help. Do you have internet?'
'Yeah... You can come over... even though it's a bit too early.'
'We don't' have time, Isa.'
'Just come over. By the way... your gnome disappeared.'
'Huh? You mean Trevelyan?'
'Nevermind... he must be in some relatives place. We'll come over then.'
Andrew was waiting besides me. 'The gnome is missing?'
I shrugged. 'Maybe Taramen got him too....'
'He must be fine. You were gone for three months.'
'Yeah.... I guess so...'
Then we made a short trip to Isa's place. First when she saw me, she gasped.
'What. Happened. To. Your. Hair!'
I'm so glad Isa had this hair-duo mania. I explained her everything while she trimmed it into a more tidier look.
'Your poor hair!'
'Oh, just shut up!'
After she was done, she pulled me in front of the mirror, 'Tada!'
I was impressed. 'Eh, explain me why the front is longer than the back?'
'It's an angled bob,' she said. 'Just deal with it. Or do you want a pixie cut?'
'Thanks, I'm good.'
Then she filled me on her social life about how Shone finally got to notice her while I tried to find Karl Rightson. I knew that it was a pseudo-name but I never knew that he was this secluded.
'He said I looked good!' Isa screamed.
'Sure. Just don't get the wrong idea.'
'Why?'
I turned to her. 'Because, just in case you both are not in the same plain of thought you are going to get your heart broken.'
Isa sighed. 'True.'
Andrew snorted and left Isa's room.
'There is a soda in the fridge.'
'Whatever.'
I could not even find the guy's Facebook page or Twitter or... anything? Not even a decent e-mail address so that readers can send comments.
'This is crazy! It's like he doesn't exist!'
'Why are you searching his anyway? The wedding is tomorrow and you are fan-girling?'
'I have a feeling that he knows something that might be important,' I said. 'Someone has to know at least his phone number. Maybe I could ask his publisher.'
'His publisher?'
I turned her laptop to her. I was already in the Blue Pegasus website. There surely was a contact number. But I had no idea whether they will tell me his details. Andrew same back with a soda and I sort of explained him the situation.
'You can't find him at all?' said Andrew. His took a sip from the soda can. 'Maybe you are right.... Maybe he does have connections with the invisible realm.'
'Like?'
Cleo walked over to my lap and purred. 'He might be invisible himself.'
'But he has a visible publisher,' I sighed. I took Isa's phone. 'May I?'
'Eh... your cat can talk?'
'It's enchanted.'
'Where did you get her?' said Isa. She tried patting Cleo but she hissed.
'From Bast.'
'Who?'
'Egyptian cat goddess,' I said as I took her phone. 'May I?'
'Sure.'
'What's her name?'
'Cleocatra.'
'Huh?'
I dialed the number and waited. The phone beeped for a while and someone picked it up.
'Hello. This is the Blue Pegasus publishing house.'
'Er... do you by chance have anything that can contact Karl Rightson.'
The other side was silent for a while. 'I'm sorry but the writer does not wish anyone else besides his publishers to contact him. And who are you? If you are a fan, you can leave any comments of his book website.'
I have no time to post comments and wait for replies!
'I'm from Universal Studios and we need to contact the writer to gain rights for a movie deal for the Mystica series.'
The operator of the phone stumbles on something, 'Wait, wait.... Um.... We have been having difficulties in contacting him lately. He hasn't even delivered the manuscript of his next book. I'm sorry. I have a contact number but its disabled.'
'O-okay,' I said. 'Thank you.'
I cut off the line.
'He disappeared, even from the writing world,' I said.
'Now what?' said Andrew, 'You still do have a plan, right?'
'If the things are in the book are true,' I said. 'Then I already know a lot about mage magic. We just need to get to Sightless on time and get all the prisoners out from the Imprisonatorium.'
'You want to bust them out?'
'I can't do this alone,' I said. 'Slitzer is still on the loose. But we need to find a mage to get inside the barrier, or some other way.'
Isa exchanged glances between us, 'The front gate is open. But it's heavily guarded. I saw in television.'
'Thanks for everything Isa.'
We left Isa's house and on the way, I explained my plan to Andrew.
'Will it work?' he said. 'I mean....'
'His game of truth or dare worked on us,' I said. 'Well... I doubt the Seers will weaver once we reveal that he is not an Enchanter. But the deities will turn. I'm sure about that. Besides, everyone who got thrown in the Imprisonatorium are on our side and there was pretty much a big list of them.'
Andrew stayed quiet for a while.
'Everyone will be distracted because of the wedding and it will be easy to get everyone out. Knowing that guy, there will be a big crowd so it will be easy to blend in once we got into the city. In case it did break into a fight, we need numbers.'
'You mean your fairies and my dragons,' said Andrew.
'Is there a better way?' I said with a smile. 'Fairies are annoying to most people and dragons are scary. It might work. It has to work. I'm not going to have that goof-ball for a dad.'
'But Amethyst, aren't you forgetting something?'
'What?'
'He means to open a portal big enough for the visible side to notice....'
I bit my lips and looked up. It was almost noon but the sky was so dark, as if it was going to rain soon. 'Is that strange arc the only thing he needs to create a portal... we can get Thor to destroy it... I'm sure he's in prison too. We checked the news. It's already done. What is he waiting for?'
'Maybe an auspicious time,' said Andrew.
'I doubt that,' I said. 'Maybe he need the Gift of Sightless to do that....'
This was exhausting. 'We'll improvise when the time comes.'
When we got home, it felt strange since it was to quiet. But it felt stranger since there was a note in front of our porch.
"If you want to get your gnome back, come to the cemetery at noon."
Andrew and I looked at each other. What now?
