Eve
"Get out of the way!"
Suddenly I'm pushed to the side, a skateboarder zooms past giving me their middle finger as they ride by. Very classy.
I pick myself up, and check my top and jeans for dirt. When I finally look up again, too many pairs of eyes to count are staring at me, some even judging.
What a great start to my first day!
The staring is something I'm familiar with , being the daughter of ex hockey player and a sister of one of the top NHL players, I usually get judged for wearing second hand clothing some days.
Sorry if I don't want to depend on daddy dearest.
Walking past the crowd of nosy people with my head low, I am reminded of the time when I was 8. Walking into the Christmas party with a bruise on my back for trying to help my brother, I remember walking out there with the gut feeling my brother wouldn't come out until the morning, most likely with bruises covering his whole body. And it was all thanks to daddy dearests.
I muttered the words, I'm not afraid, to myself about 500 times and when I finally saw my dads face, I wished he was dead.
I wished I wouldn't be so weak. I wished I could do something, anything. I wished my mum would come back, to hold me. And tell me everything would be okay.
Instead my big brother did, blood dripping down his face and a swollen eye, he continued to hold me until I could no longer cry.
From that point on I decided that the only person who would understand me would be him, the one person I could trust.
"You're a weak little girl! You were a fucking mistake, ya hear me! A fucking mistake!" He kicks me in the ribs, blood rushes out of my mouth-
The freshest memory of my father from two months ago haunts me, I could never sleep in my own bed not when he knew where I was. So I put in a transfer for Pembroke college, and I got in.
I swipe the student card I was given when I walked in, pushing the door open to a pretty brick building as I drag my suitcase behind me. A new start.
There's a few couches and chairs placed around the room with mailboxes decorating the sides other than that it's mostly empty. Homey.
"Hi darling, what's your name?" A voice of a middle aged lady startles me, snapping my head towards the desk I read her name tag. Louise.
"Hi-um, I'm Eve, Eve Beckett." Louise's eyes widen as I say my last name. I shuffle from one foot to the other as she starts aggressively typing on her computer.
After a few moments of silence she speaks in a curt tone, "Follow me." Picking up my suitcase, I follow her up the stairs noticing the way her body dramatically swings from left to right. She's definitely a cougar.
We walk through a dimly lit hall, my suitcase echoing the walls of the hall awkwardly before she finally stops in front of room 106. I reach out for the handle but she grips my wrist to stop me, I flinch at the sudden movement but it fortunately goes unnoticed by her.
"We are quite strict on our rules here in Crest dorms. No boys. No damaging property and respect your neighbours." She says each rule with a sharp glare which I reply with a little smile.
As I am about to push the door open, the door goes inwards and I stumble in to the room unexpectedly.
"Hi! You must be my roommate, I'm Katie!" A gorgeous ginger girl exclaims as she reaches out for my hand, I barely have time to compose myself before she is pulling me inside with my suitcase.
"Bye Louise!" She shouts to the cranky woman staring at us at the doorway, the door shuts with a slam and she turns her attention on me with a bright smile on her face which is contagious so sure enough a second later I am also smiling.
"I'm Eve, it's so nice to meet you!"
"You're so gorgeous! Omg is your hair actually that long!" She takes my hand in hers and carries my suitcase towards the empty bed in her other.
"Haha yeah. You already decorated?" I ask looking around her bed, pictures frame the walls and half drooping fairy lights cover the walls.
"Yeah, I got here like three hours ago with my parents." My body stiffens, I quickly pull my suitcase towards my bed, unzipping it.
"I'll help you!"
"Thank you" I say tucking a loose hair behind my ear, I've never seen someone so excited to be my friend. It unsettles me.
I start on unpacking my little belongings setting them on my bedside table as Katie works on putting my clothes in my wardrobe while we talk, I become surprised by how easy it is to talk to her.
"You're a transfer right? So you're in sophomore year?"
"Yeah, I needed a fresh start. you know what I mean?" I say from the floor as I push my suitcase under my bed.
"Totally, what course are you taking?"
"Business." I sigh as I drop onto my bed, Katie follows suit and drops down next to me.
"You're going to be in a class full of athletes-" she giggles when I roll my eyes -"they all take it just in case they don't make it to the professionals."
"Kill me now." I say with wide eyes of disgust.
"You really hate athletes that much hey?" She laughs, "Okay maybe I'm being dramatic, it's just the cocky egotistical male athletes. I'm all for female athletes." I admit.
I would even consider myself on the borderline of a female athlete, even though I've never done competitive dance I have devoted my love and time to it.
It's what gets me out of my head when my thoughts consume me.
"Well you'll find a lot of those types here."
"What course do you take?" I ask, she seems the type to take something like media since she is so bubbly.
"Music. I've always been obsessed with it, it's like the calm in the storm." She explains, talking with her hands.
"I totally get it." Nodding, I stop myself from mentioning that that's what dance feels like for me. Dance is the one thing I want to keep private, my one tiny little secret in a world where my life is exposed to the public due to my last name.
"Twenty questions?!" She smiles, nodding I'm thankful she's changing the topic of conversation.
"Celebrity crush?"
"Probably like-I don't know, maybe young Leonardo DiCaprio."
"Solid answer." She agrees nodding her head. Soon enough twenty questions turn into forty which then turn into sixty which then just turns into easy flowing conversation, I laugh the hardest that I think I ever have in my entire life.
By the time one of us checks our phone it's already 6:30pm and we've been talking for three hours.
"Oh my god! We're going to miss dinner!" She shouts as she quickly runs towards the door, pulling it open. I follow after her grabbing both of our slippers on the way out.
She turns around suddenly noting she forgot her shoes but smiles when she sees them in my hands.
"I think your my best friend already!" She laughs as she hooks our arms together and we walk in sync down the hall and towards the dining hall.
As we walk down the large dining hall, I feel the familiar feeling of eyes on me, the downside of being new.
Katie leads us towards an empty table opposite a table full of loud obnoxious people who I could only assume is the football and cheerleader table due to their uniforms and the stupidly attractive guys on the table.
"Katie!" A shout from behind me steals my attention, a boy with tattoos up his arms and lean muscles saunters up to our table.
"Hey Nick!" She beams up at him, but from the get go I can feel the friendship emitting off of them.
"Nick this is my friend Eve, Eve this is Nick." My heart tightens when Katie calls me her friend and not her roommate, which I know is silly.
"Hey." Nick winks down at me.
"She's not interested." Katie answers for me as Nick slides up next to me on the table.
"Never say never." Never.
I hear footsteps decent the room, and though there are hundreds of people walking through the doors all the time something in my body forced me to look towards the door.
My breath stops. My heart beats faster. I never thought I'd see him again.
"Oh that's Carson Ryder, he's the quarterback and captain of the football team. Total playboy but look at him." I don't look at Katie but I can tell she is looking at him with dreamy eyes.
The unnerving thing?
He's looking straight back at me.
